I swear i got the first silent hill in a proper creepypasta sounding way; was buying some ps1 games from a charity shop (i was around 7 or 8), one of these purchases was a cracked box of Driver 2. However, after buying it, i looked in and there were 2 discs, Driver 2, and... Silent Hill! It terrified me, moved me and is the sole reason I love horror in the way I do, and came completely unwanted into my life at first

Notes about SH1 versions: -PS3 version has a LOT of noticeable bugs. Dialogue cuts out in certain cutscenes, the final area bugs out gun sfx to not exist and even causes an ear-piercing ring when shooting certain enemies. In addition, the motion blur effect causes heavy unintentional ghosting that looks like burn-in. For the most part this option is decent, but it requires conscious workarounds that ruin the immersion, especially in the later half of the game. The PS3 emulation for this game has always been wonky and hasn’t ever been fixed. -Duckstation (a PS1 emulator for PC) is the best way to play SH1 due to the optional enhancements, but with the polygon fixes on, it causes the game to freeze at the church cutscene. There is an easy fix, just turn off the enhancements before that cutscene then turn it back on after. Plus it has the upside of not having to drop too much money on a bunch of physical hardware.

The words Silent Hill had no meaning after 4, and 4 was stretching it. After 3 really, the people that were Silent Hill all but left. Konami, that thing that gave money to the people who conceived Silent Hill, wanted new games to fill the void. They called those games "silent hill". Those games were made by people with zero and thin understanding of the series. How could they understand when the original team wasn't there to explain it? Their job was to make horror games with the words Silent Hill on them so that people would buy them. They took their little ideas of what a Silent Hill game should be, and regurgitated all these non Silent Hill games that were called Silent Hill. Team Silent did a lot of research and development to understand what they were making, and they made it pure. After 3, these other people just knew that silent hiLL needs monsters, and that is all they thought they needed. You can stick the words Silent Hill on any old game that some randos made, but the purpose of the words on the tin are to milk the series than representing what the meaning of what Silent Hill ever was. And people know, and the scores reflect it, as do the sales. As do the the writers of Silent hill, which finished their games when it was time for them to end at Silent Hill 3. You can't blame Konami for being an awful greedy corporate sloth for milking its dead franchise.

Because they fell to the western type game back in the mid 2000's just like Capcom did with Resident Evil 5 and 6. I'm glad they both seem to be back on track nowadays, seeing as Resident Evil modern Remakes so far have been good (even RE 3 with all the cut and replaced content personally) and Konami with Silent Hill 2 Remake having part of the one team overseeing Bloober Team and MGS Delta.
@SPG8989
@SPG8989 Жыл бұрын
@angel.3006 Lol falling to western ways is a bullshit statement. Japanese companies need to do more following because Japanese games are so far behind it is unreal. Also if you think any of the RE remakes or 7 and 8 are Eastern type of games then you are really clueless. Finally having any faith in Bloober team on making a good reamke you are very misguided. They have had 2 solid games and they were walking sims Layer 1 and 2. Sind then they have done a very mediocre The Median, and absolute awful Blair Witch, and a laughable "remake" of LoF 1 and 2. Really the only Japanese devs to have any faith in are Fromsoftware and Square every once in a while or basically only when it comes to Final Fantasy and capcom. Konami just realesed that god awful Metal Gear collection so I am unsure where your faith in them is being restored. Lastly, if you will notice that all of the good Japanese devs are making very heavy Western influenced games with western mechanics

I know what you mean, the originals when I had them were the most stable best looking versions of sh2&3 I had ever played. When I had the HD collection I still found the new voice actors fun and the characters models beautiful, everything else like the environment and monsters were done poorly. The bugs that the patch for the ps3 version tried to fix still didn’t fix much. Not a big problem for me though if I have the original versions. I miss my collection so much 😢

My PS2 had long been retired by then and I wanted to play some SH2 and 3. By far the most egregious thing about the HDC is that when you leave the map in 2, the screen stays dark as if you're still loading out of the map, but the game still runs so you can get killed while waiting for your vision to come back. Other than that, it did the job well. Still wish I coulda had the original voices for 3

Now I just need to mod my PS2 with a HDMI port (I'm currently using the PS2 Pound HDMI cable to play games on my HDTV, but it makes these games a bit too dark even with the brightness maxed out) and I'll be set to go :P.

I recently played through Silent Hill 2 Restless Dreams on OG Xbox after playing the game almost exclusively on PS2 all these years. I may get crucified for this but in the slight defense of Silent Hill 2 Restless Dreams's default control scheme, it plays much better with the Duke Controller. Because X and B are much closer together, strafing and quick turning wasn't terribly hard after I got used to it. It's got nothing on the PS2 Controls, and I would definitely change your controls to something similar to the PS2 version if you're using an S Model Controller or a 360 Controller via backwards compatibility, but for the controller it was designed for at the time, the control scheme isn't terrible.

As for me, the best way to play the original Silent Hill outside from having a CRT and a PS1 has to be using an emulator specifically duck station and using the crtlottes Shader on top of it. Not only does it add a filter that looks like an old CRT screen, but it also warps the screen to make it look like that curved CRT tube TV display. So you get the CRT filter and you get the screen warp as well and it looks so convincing and is play better than any other CRT filter out there that just adds lines or something. I grew up on CRTs and that's got to be the most convincing one I've seen

Yeah an emulator like duckstation and a crt filter is the best way to play if you don't want to go down a rabbit hole of spending time and money trying to achieve perfect authenticity. It will get you at least 90% of the way there with very little fuss, the crt filters do a great job of blending the dithering effects too.

I played SH2 on the PS2 when it first came out, and the fog effects at the time blew my mind. I also have the Xbox (original) port, and the HD collection released on the 360. And in my opinion, the HD collection isn't as offensive as many make it out to be. Unless you're doing a side by side comparison, you may not even notice some of the objectively worse things when comparing the two Xbox releases. Neither did I find the SH3 port in the HD Collection to be quite as offensive. The fog/darkness effects are again less pronounced then the original PS2 release. But that's again something you may not even notice unless doing a side by side comparison. My biggest complaint was that certain parts felt inferior in some unquantifiable way. Regarding Shattered Memories, I use to have the game on PS2. But it was completely unplayable due to the game hard crashing every single time the first "otherworld" chase sequence tried to load. No damage to the disk, the game just didn't work.

Recently I've been slowly playing through SH2 for the first time on the PS3 HD collection and I have to say, aside from outdoor frame drops and a few graphical glitches, it's honestly not that bad. I think that the plot twist is one reason Shattered Memories for being named a Silent Hill is mostly aimed for returning players. Since they are familiar with the characters, town and story. If it was just named Shattered Memories most players would be able to figure out the twist. Movies has used it several times. However I think it could have been a proper Silent Hill game with original characters, also with including the end twist still be a nice experience. That if there were actual puzzles and better combat.

What really makes SH1 cool to me is that it feels like a PS2 game in terms of scope, gameplay, and story, just with PS1 graphics. If you play SH1 and 2 back-to-back, it’s remarkable how similarly they play. The graphics are also incredibly impressive for PS1. Definitely up there with Vagrant Story, Dino Crisis, Spyro, etc., as one of the best looking games on the console.

You can actually turn the smoothing off when playing PS1 or PS2 games on the PS3 and it looks BEAUTIFUL. I've pretty much used a PS3 as my PS1 ever since having access to one, and now that I have a launch-model, it basically serves as all three consoles while only occupying one power outlet and HDMI port -- I love it!!

There was difference regarding Silent Hill 4 that I noticed you missed, it is nothing too major to impact the gameplay in a positive way but on the PS2 there were exclusive apartment haunts that were not on any other release of Silent Hill 4, Recently someone made it possible for such exclusive haunts to be on PC via the same site you brought up when it comes to fixes in general. Loved seeing this as well and thank you for making this in the detailing you have as it also reminds me on how there are multiple and different version of Snatcher with censorship and edits.

Loved the video. Little mention on SH4 that it was actually available on the PS3 from the Japanese PS2 version (English text etc). I got it on the Hong Kong store which is basically the Japanese store but all in English. It runs pretty well but I haven’t played it fully. It has some disclaimer saying it doesn’t but I didn’t see any issues within the first 30 mins of play.

2:23:10 You're wrong about how FPS Boost works. It's a feature that makes games with 30fps caps run at 60fps (and 60fps games run at 120fps). It has nothing to do with getting a more stable 30fps over PS3. The more powerful hardware of the Series X alone is what is responsible for the better performance over PS3 so the Series X performance is no indication of the 360 performance

Thank you so much for this! Silent Hill 3 is my favorite game of all time and it's a travesty that you can't just buy it on Steam and play it! I still play either the PS2 version or the base PC version which I bought and love playing as is partially because I'm too lazy to figure out how to install mods! But if anyone knows how I could modify it to where I don't need to have the disc in the drive to be able to play it, I would greatly appreciate it! ☺️

Silent Hill 3 is my personal favorite of the series. I love 2, of course, but I got so much mileage out of SH3. Because of the difficulty loop mechanic, sometimes I would just play through the game, randomly, when I had extra free time and didn't feel like playing or watching anything else. I can't remember how many loops I did when it was all said & done, but it was quite a few, for sure!

There actually were a few games (That I know of) that went from portable to home console release, examples I can think of are all PSP games but it's this, Motorstorm Arctic Edge which went from PSP to PS2 it's a PS3 racing franchise so that one was particularly odd, there's also the GTA stories games, Vice City and Liberty City both from PSP to PS2 and that's pretty much all I can think of but I'm sure there's other stuff that might have gotten a full release, like I know a few that were part of collections like Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker HD and the God of War PSP games so there might have been other stuff that got a full release.

Notes about SH2 versions: -PS2 Greatest Hits hits is the best console version, has no compromises with the bonus content. Xbox version is only worth playing if that’s all you can get. -HD Collection is terrible, but the Xbox version is unpatched, meaning that it just has different issues to the PS3 version. This version shouldn’t be played ever, and there is no “better” of the two (backwards comparability enhancements not included). They both have issues that ruin both SH2 & 3. -Silent Hill 2 Enhanced Edition is the best way to play it, besides the slightly worse CG cutscenes there are no downsides to it. Plus the project is still being actively worked on, so there is potential in the future for the PS2 cutscenes to be added in. More recently they introduced a 60 FPS patch that makes the game really nice to play for those who can’t handle 30 FPS. The also finally have full mouse support and surprisingly comfortable to play.
@frullmusic
@frullmusic Жыл бұрын
SH2 Enhanced Edition is good but the fact that it's built on the PC port and HD upscales textures and stuff ends up slightly numbing what the original game was going for. It's just not as atmospheric as the PS2 version. SH2 is 'best' played as originally intended in 4:3 with low-res textures and rendering either on emulation or the original console. You can even upscale to 720p with 60fps for an ever-so-slight visual enhancement without having any of the downsides of the PC Enhanced; all the visual grit is maintained. If people want to play it in widescreen with the upscaled textures, re-rendered text and 1080p 3D model rendering and such, then sure, it's a valid way of playing, but it should always be noted that you're not getting the 'full' experience. At the end of the day, this comes down to preference, but personally I think it's best to go with what the devs intended.

I think the Xbox version deserves more credit than it gets and I have fully played it on both PS2/Xbox. The only downgrades it got were the weaker fog effects and the slightly worse sound effects/FMV quality. To make up for it, it has essentially no loading screens once the game starts which really helps with the immersion, progressive scan, superior vertex lighting, 60fps inventory/map screens and more control schemes to adjust to your liking - though side stepping is only available with 2D controls. Also, unlike what Avalanche says I did not encounter any micro stutters at all so I guess his disc is borked. Game is smooth 100% of the time. Anyhow, besides those things I mentioned, everything is else is exactly the same. The soft shadows, pressure sensitive controls/vibration, textures, every other graphical effect, voice/music audio, etc.

1:53:05 I hated the Wii version of Shattered Memories so much because I was waggling like an absolute idiot trying to get through the chase sequences, and I could not waggle and move the controls fast enough so I kept dying, in order to beat the Wii version you have to be fully immersed and play it like an intense exercise routine, otherwise you'll die over and over at the chase sequences. I ended up selling the Wii version because I knew I would never want to play it like that ever again, and I bought the PS2 version instead, I loved the PS2 version and it was very easy to get through.

I used the original voices for SH2 and played it on the series S so it ran pretty well and looked fine except for the FMV cutscenes but it was overall good. It seemed like I experienced what others experienced. Hearing what you said about SH3 made me realize why I wasn't as into it as I was SH2, it's the voice acting. The new voices change the tone and just feel so unserious for a silent hill game.

SH - the first two games, that is - represent a very different type of horror. Slow, methodical, one that gradually chips away at your sanity. Most people definitely need a break before they can pick it up again. But FWIW, the scariest game I've played has to be Fatal Frame 1, and I can easily see how it can literally cause a heart attack with its psychologically tortuous atmosphere and sudden scares. It's not that I don't appreciate the genius behind SH1/2's horrific settings, but they hit different now, as they are more or less tied to themes that are more common, familiar and prosaically interpersonal (Harry wanting to save his child and James trying to unearth that ghastly realization has always been with him since the beginning of the story) while FF1 went with a vengeful figure whose hatred and evil caused by it can be understood only by a few people.

Just so y’all know, I tried playing Silent Hill on the PS1 with the Framemeister. Unfortunately the upscaler loses signal for about 5 seconds every time it changes resolution. The map in Silent Hill (and I think the item screen?) are displayed in different resolutions than the main game. So every time I had to check the map (5 seconds of blackness) then return to the game (5 seconds of blackness) to suddenly being attacked by an enemy. It was incredibly annoying and for me it made the game unplayable.
