In 1967,--I did a building job,in Freemantle, Western Australia,--there was an old "pool-hall,"-in the main-street,--I went into,-on the wall,faded,--was all these U.S.submariners,-signatures on the walls,--plus old photo's of their submarins,--even their favorite "cues"-were stuck high up,under the lights,--this was a really old joint !--i asked the old bloke, who owned the place,,he said "i remember those boys well!!--they always drove "a pink jeep"--and really hit "the grog !"---i couldn't stop looking at all those "old signatures !"--my job was only a week there,--and I flew back to Sydney,--Unfortunately,--it was all torn down-for "high-rise"---I'm 77 now-"an old geezer"--but I remember all those faded signatures to this day !--Aussie john--

A sad story about the last and final patrol of Greyling. She had rescued Msgt Roy Wilson from an island (Panay). He had evaded capture from the Japanese for over a year, our loss of the Philippines. Sadly, he was lost with all hands when Greyling was sunk.

I have much respect for the people who can serve on submarines. I spent 22 years in the USMC and would rather crawl through mud with bullets whizzing overhead than be inside a sub. I'm majorly claustrophobic.

Admiral Christie was played by Raymond Bailey, aka Mr Drysdale on the Beverly Hillbillies.

OMG, those guys are babies! HATE war. Thank you for defending one of the greatest nation, the United States. And allies. Thank God for the PTSD diagnosis. Back then they just dealt with the horrors of war with alcohol like my cousin. When he returned he was never the same. Turned to alcohol, lost his wife and child. His father was an alcoholic so he was predisposed. He fought in Vietnam. His brother found him deceased. Did I say I HATE war?

Yeah, but the burning question remains, who won the checkers match?

At 3:36 it's Raymond Bailey-Mr. Drysdale- without his toupee. He always wore a rug on the Beverly Hillbillies.

Probably a daft question..... but how do the deck guns survive the saline environment without rusting?

Well waterproof greased. Regular maintenance at sea, on the surface.

I'm thinking, sacrificial anodes. They very rarely used the deck gun. Used at the beginning of the war to conserve torpedos

the Grayling's final patrol site was discovered a couple years ago, apparently contacted an underwater mine.Japanese reports were consulted even early on, but there had been confusion on the translation that put the location hundreds of miles away from the actual site.

Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, so that they can identify the material they need to license, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes. In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous KZbin users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do. Love our channel and want to support what we do? You can help us save and post more orphaned films! What dialect is the Rear Admiral speaking? Is this some genuine non-rhotic New England dialect or is this a mid-atlantic accent? You almost never hear an American speak this crisply nowadays.

*Aggressive, obnoxious gum chewing intensifies. Also, Raymond Bailey (Millburn Drysdale from Beverly Hillbillies) playing Admiral Christie, the guy that cancel the Captain's leave and had to many staff meetings.

The whale part is totally BS. Ni way a whale is going to be around when depth charges are dropped. Obviously whales sensors are very sensitive and they would swim in the opposite direction of the charges.

The real Lee seemed to have aged a lot, interviewed here in 1958. Approaching senility almost, with no sense of humour. Or perhaps just nervous. Obviously reciting a prepared script.
