Dating to 1958, this episode of the TV show "Silent Service" is entitled "The Triton's Christmas". It tells the story of a wartime Christmas aboard the submarine USS Triton (SS-201). This episode represented something of a change of pace from the normal action-packed "Silent Service" episodes, as the submarine is sent to assist and observe the first U.S. bombing raid on Japanese occupied Wake Island. (Triton was one of three submarines stationed between Midway and Wake Islands to mark the way for United States Army Air Forces B-24 Liberator bombers in strikes on Wake and to rescue the crews of any planes forced down at sea. She made no rescues, but, on the night of 23 December, she aided in guiding the Liberators in a night bombing attack on the island) The USS Triton's log for Dec. 25, 1942 reads: "0900, dived to 200 feet and held appropriate Christmas ceremonies." These included Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, a tree, passing out of Christmas gifts, and a Santa Claus. In the holiday spirit, one man learns that war sometimes unites families as well as divides them. The skipper of the Triton, Lt. Cdr. C. C. Kirkpatrick, became. a Rear Admiral and was Chief of Naval Information
Hosted by Thomas Dykers, it stars Eric Fleming as Lt. Cmdr. C. C. Kirkpatrick, Paul Picerni
as Lt. John H. Eichman, Michael Miller as Lt. H. C. Van Roosen, Wright King as McKenzie, George Brenlin as Mike Kaluskie, Ralph Votrian as Otterson, Harry Landers as the Chief Quartermaster, Benny Baker as Mayhew the Cook and Walter Kelley as Andrews. It was directed by Jean Yarborough and written by Jack Jacobs.

And the cook singing "Deck The Halls"(he's not listed in the cast) is Marvin Kaplan, the voice of Choo-Choo in the "Top Cat" cartoons. He was also the phone lineman Henry Beesmeyer in the sit-com "Alice", when he was sometimes seen in the show frequenting Mel's Diner, and Marvin was back in the Navy on an episode of "McHale's Navy".

As "skipper" of USS Cod, one of the subs covered in this TV series, I had to laugh at the scenes in the torpedo room -- NO TORPEDOES and the galley with the turkeys -- not a single galley accessory or spice on the shelf! And the can of nutmeg would have been the size of a thick book, not the little household size used (pickey-pickey... I know)... the sub used was the USS Sawfish, a reserve training sub docked in Long Beach. More classroom than combat sub, it was stripped of its crew amenities and apparently "Twin Dolphin Enterprises" didn't include a set decoration budget! Still they are priceless views on an era of the submarine service long gone.

The actors in it 3 of them I recognize from 2 in 2 different westerns. One is Rawhide and the other in Wanted Dead or Alive. The other one was in The Untouchables .Thank you for showing this .

Like everything else in TV at the time, it was totally scripted. ALL the captains interviewed at the end of the show come off like robots. Acting lessons were not included in the Naval Academy syllabus... :o)

This is a Wonderful story, that's a minor dramatization. Please don't ever marginalize what these men and women endured and Dominated. There's no movie that could ever come close to paralleling whet these folks did, on either theater of the battlefield. My Dad was on the Battleship Washington BB56 during WW2. (BB56, Washington was a sister ship to the North Carolina) Dad lied about his age to be able to join, and go to war, underage. He gave me a tour of the North Carolina, in Wilmington NC. about 25ish years ago. It was interesting, when some of the "tour guides" were trying to get Dad to go somewhere on the tour path, that he didn't wat to go. He more or less, took over the tour, as he knew his way around from his 1944-5 service / fighting experience on the Washington. Dad was so very proud, and knowledgeable. I so wish that he could have taken one of our Grandchildren for the same tour. Sincerely, Scott C Roland
