“The song of Lúthien before Mandos was the song most fair that ever in words was woven, and the song most sorrowful that ever the world shall hear. Unchanged, imperishable, it is sung still in Valinor beyond the hearing of the world, and listening the Valar are grieved. For Lúthien wove two themes of words, of the sorrow of the Eldar and the grief of Men, of the Two Kindreds that were made by Ilúvatar to dwell in Arda, the Kingdom of Earth amid the innumerable stars. And as she knelt before him her tears fell upon his feet like rain upon stones; and Mandos was moved to pity, who never before was so moved, nor has been since.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Silmarillion.
As the great Professor Tolkien never actually wrote any lyrics for this song, and to my knowledge nobody else has ever written any music for it either, I decided to take up the challenge of creating this legendary song myself. It wasn't easy, and it stretched all of my skills to the limit, but I hope that you'll feel I did it justice! Thank you for listening - Eurielle.

Lúthien's Lament - Lyrics :
Oh great Mandos
High among Valar
I come to you in sorrow
And with a broken heart
Long has been my journey
That led me to these halls
But now I kneel before thee
As grief my spirit calls
I seek a man named Beren
Whom I bid await me here
I pledged that I would find him
Before he leaves this sphere
This man of whom I speak
He gave his life for me
But thence my soul grew weak
And at last it too broke free
So borne upon an urgent breeze
I travelled to this place
Where only one thing could appease
The torment I now face
Oh tell me I am not too late
To see my love once more
For that would be too cruel a fate
I beg him be restored
That we may take a little time
To bid our last farewell
And remember all we shared erstwhile
Such joy no one could quell
For never was a greater love
Than that within our hearts
Once born, forever binding us
E’en though through death we part
Eurielle is a fascinating artist whose music redefines the Crossover Genre. Drawing influence from myth, legend, and fantasy, as well as our own human nature, her music will transport you into another world...

"I never called Edith Luthien - but she was the source of the story that in time became the chief part of the Silmarillion. It was first conceived in a small woodland glade filled with hemlocks at Roos in Yorkshire (where I was for a brief time in command of an outpost of the Humber Garrison in 1917, and she was able to live with me for a while). In those days her hair was raven, her skin clear, her eyes brighter than you have seen them, and she could sing - and dance. But the story has gone crooked, & I am left, and I cannot plead before the inexorable Mandos." - J. R. R. Tolkien Letters #340 to his son Christopher

@@EurielleMusic well actually i think he did not want a song for this because the story between luthien and beren also has parts of his own lovestory implemented and the story between luthien and beren is to great to put it in words or to make a song ouot of it. BUT: I think he would be reeeeaallly proud!! If there is any way to put this together into a song...it would be like this one. I think it really fits his character and all his story. It is like Luthien actually singign in front of me and that makes me cry because it is so beautiful. it really couldn't be done better And i mean it, because i am always a perfectionist and i analyse everything and i am very critical about everything but i find nothing..really nothing that is off or could be done better. And normally i always find a little thing. So great job you did there!! this will be my favourite song from now on. The word sphere stood out to the Tolkein nerd in me - so much so that I searched for the word sphere and found your comment here. The world was flat during the First Age when Beren and Luthien lived, and wouldn't be made round until the drowning of Numenor when the "straight road" was left only to the elves. It's easy enough to imagine Luthien in the lament meant sphere as as a domain of power or influence, though it is a stretch since the sphere-ing of the world is so important to the later story. That tiny nitpick aside, this song is very, very good.

That's why Mandos went up to Valmar to talk to the other Valar what to do the situation. So the Valar made 2 choices for her: 1. Choose to remain an Elf and sang in the Halls of Valmar to forget the sorrow and let Beren go. 2. Choose to give up her immortality and become Human. Allowing Beren to be revived, but she will grow old lile the rest of men. She knows the risk she chooses mortality. That which is the right way and the Valar were unexpected about this. No 1 knows how their fate were and where men's spirits have gone after they die. Only Eru knows...

Listening to this whilst reading "Beren and Luthien" gives a whole new radiance to that suffering Elven maid. Once carefree, a new power wandered into her heart. She suffered her Father's disdain for her beloved. She suffered his leaving, his torment at the hands of Sauron in Tol-in-Gaurhoth, she suffered his leaving again, then every painful, heavy, horrific step towards and in the fell dreaded halls of Angband. She suffered the malice of Morgoth's stare. She suffered the dreaded millennials of the seconds Beren cut the Silmaril from the Black Crown. She suffered the terror of his Awakening, their horrible departure. She suffered the grievous wounding of Beren by Carcharoth. She suffered His pain as she healed him. She suffered the steps towards Doriath. She suffered the long centuries of the hours of the Hunt for the dreaded Wolf. She suffered Huan and Beren leaving the world...a suffering beyond words. Only a song was realized. A song that joined Eru Illuvatar's themes. Thou hast given voice to the suffering of Luthien. Guren Glassui, Hiril Vuin. (Thank you, My Lady in Sindarin)

Let's be clear: The ONLY way to properly bring the Silmarilion to the screen would be to do it Game of Thrones style with about 10 times the budget. One of the seasons would need to end with the tale of Beren and Luthien. This song would be *the* perfect climax of that season. It builds to this moment, grows silent before this masterpeice comes on. Nothing else would suffice. It is that perfect. Throw in how the professor considered this the pivotal moment of the Silmarilion, and it all adds up.

I have always read the Silmarillion with the idea that though written as a narrative, I have to think Tolkien meant it to be sung as some grand opera. You have captured that very spirit in this song. Imagine this sung on stage in some great opera hall, a show stopper in an opera chalk full of them! Brava! Bravissima!

Not only is the music impressive, but I must take a moment to stress how fantastic the composition is as well. Oh great Mandos High among Valar I come to you in sorrow And with a broken heart Long has been my journey That led me to these halls But now I kneel before thee As grief my spirit calls I seek a man named Beren Whom I bid await me here I pledged that I would find him Before he leaves this sphere This man of whom I speak He gave his life for me But thence my soul grew weak And at last it too broke free So borne upon an urgent breeze I travelled to this place Where only one thing could appease The torment I now face Oh tell me I am not too late To see my love once more For that would be too cruel a fate I beg him be restored That we may take a little time To bid our last farewell And remember all we shared erstwhile Such joy no one could quell For never was a greater love Than that within our hearts Once born, forever binding us E'en though through death we part Once born, forever binding us E'en though through death we part

There is a depth of solace, sadness, and sincerity in this that only difficulty is had in written expression. I've heard this song now and then over the years, had it in a couple playlists while I was playing LOTR stuff. I was today years old when I saw the comments talking about how you wrote this. I read the description and I'm shook, I genuinely thought Tolkien had written this like the poem of Beren and Luthien itself. The word choice, the content, everything about it never made me question whether or not it was Tolkien because in my head this is what he would've written. So I don't know if that's an immense slight to you that I've seemingly ignored your incredible writing talent or if this is extreme praise that you absolutely nailed every single aspect of Tolkien, the LOTR and the story of Beren and Luthien. I hope you take it as a compliment because I'm seriously impressed.

But then even I was struck: and the execution, and (which is rare these days) the text is beautiful! Emotion would be even more and would be a masterpiece, no kidding, for centuries. Although i go with "there Was a reason for no lyrics from Tolkien", probably to further deepen the Meaning of how special and otherwordly Luthiens song Was, i daresay this must come pretty close. It is a fine line between sorrowful, hopeful, love and mystical like a song with words woven by the valar. Truly an amazing work and i Can listen to this endlessly. Very awesome. Very well done. I love your voice, and I admire your disclaimer. As a Tolkien fan, and all that Middle Earth entails, I respect the character of Luthien as though she's "out of reach." Your effort here is faithful to intent, and your voice ethereal to give us that glimpse into the meeting between her and Mandos. I was moved, I was emotional; I felt your heart, and the echo of Luthien's pleas. You definitely did this justice. I could have listened to this, were it even 20 minutes in length, and resonated with the offering that she presented.
