To be honest, I would have done the same. I did not know Goldenrod had slot machines until someone in Twitch chat mentioned it. Worse, my goal was to LOSE coins and buy the rest, I did not even think about actually trying to win anything!

Honestly, it's super dumb that the game wouldn't let you buy coins to max out while you were at 9950, when you needed 9999 to get Porygon. What were they thinking with that? It reasonably should've only given the "coin case is full" error message if you actually had a full case of 9999.

You could train in the trainer house once per day. You can alter the enemy team by linking your game with another game via mystery gift and having the other games team consist of 6 chansey/blissey so it gives a lot of xp everytime you win.

For Porygon, if you use the slots machines on the far right of the casino, you can spend 1 coin once (assuming you don’t win). From 9.949 coins you just buy 50 more to get to 9.999. No need to travel back to Johto for that. Awesome vid as always ! You inspired me to take on the challenge as well. Currently on 166/251

To me, beyond Gen 2 or 3, a getting living dex in every generation is too much. Having to re-obtain several hundred Pokémon multiple times is too repetitive for me. I'm just focusing on getting a living dex in Home, with each Pokémon (including forms) caught in the generation in which it debuted. Mostly, I'm using the same rules as you, but I only have to recapture a Pokémon from a previous generation if it has a new form or evolutionary stage. Grinding to get a Dragonite is not something I want to do 8 times. Soon to be 9.

I absolutely get that mindset. From my perspective, going for a Living Dex allows to fully explore every Generation in detail and see what it does differently. But the repetitiveness also means I will not go for all the different forms (except Unowns probably). At the end of the day, we are all scratching that completionist itch. We just take different paths to get there :') Hope you have a fantastic time in Gen 9!

hey that's the same frustration I discovered when I was trying to win a porygon in fire red. had to buy as close to the max coin count as possible, then hit a jackpot so it would pay out over the amount I needed. it's been really fun seeing someone demonstrate how to complete the pokedex in a game.

If I'm not wrong, you could technically speed up E4 training if you knock out enemies with neutral moves (as in, not super effective but not not very effective), since you skip the message saying the attack was super effective.

I know it can be frustrating to completionists, but I have to applaud every single time I learn about a new way the Pokemon games found to make collecting every Pokemon even more inexplicably weird or obtuse. Randomly designated headbutt tree rarities, Feebas only spawning in four randomly-generated tiles, Runerigus' evolution method (my personal favorite)... given how much of the game's initial success came from being a fertile source of playground rumors and expressing individuality through your team selection, it just feels so perfect that they did things like randomize what tree gives you Pineco.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the varying ways to get Pokémon, especially the weird evolution conditions. My gripe is how Gen 2 added a bunch of awesome new Pokémon, yet made most of them almost impossible to find unless you know where to look. For instance, Tyrogue is a new Pokémon with an interesting evolution condition... but there is only one in the entire game, and it is hidden at the very bottom of an optional cave. In my opinion, a few rare Pokémon is fine. Most of the roster, not so much. But I completely agree with you, weird or obtuse evolution conditions or catching methods are awesome! Runerigus is pretty good, Shedinja is fantastic, Feebas is a bit frustrating yet I like it, but my personal favorite might be Alcremie. That's probably because I love ice cream ;')

I have a funny story about using an eevee in ultra sun. So I had caught one cause I wanted to use a vaporeon but I didn’t realize by the time I reached the end of the cave before the rock type kahuna that I accidentally maxed out my eevee’s happiness and thus lead me to accidentally evolve into espeon. I decided eh why not I never used one before anyways.

Honestly the grind is so rough in these games, it might actually be worth the hunt for the lucky egg if you're trying to evolve everything. Max repels on a lvl 25 Pokemon can turn Chansey from a 1/100 encounter to a more manageable 1/21. From there, it's still a 2% chance, to hold but it's doable. I actually did it myself recently.

You're a madman, getting the lucky egg was the one thing I refused to do in GSC. Even if you have a 100% chance of getting a 1% encounter and playing on triple speed (dodrio tower) it takes ages of biking to encounter the 'mon. I can't imaging encountering 50+ chanseys with only a 5% chance. How many repels did it take you?

Heavy Ball is seriously flawed in Gen 2. Case in point I tried to catch a Snorlax with a Pikachu in battle and all 3 heavy ball I had EPICALLY failed so I’m shocked it worked first try on Lugia

I fully understand that things will just get increasingly ridiculous with later generations, and I don't really care about the actual gameplay, but I am really curious what the routing would be like for a Gen 3 Living Dex. The reason I think it would be particularly interesting (and infuriating) is because of Pokemon like Celebi, which is actually legitimately obtainable in gen 3 without glitches. You just need either an event from 2006, or the Japanese bonus disk for Pokemon Colosseum! :D Lugia also requires an event if you don't want to play through all of Pokemon XD and purify the unpurifiable Pokemon. Deoxys on the other hand is exclusive to an event, which as far as I can tell seems impossible to trigger at all without glitches. Basically, where gen 1 had 2 games to manage, and gen 2 had 4, gen 3 could potentially require up to _7_ across two different systems if we get unlucky. Edit: from what I can tell, Emerald has so many Pokemon available that you might be able to get away with only have Fire Red, Leaf Green, and XD as supports.
