Sums up how I feel. I think BO3 was the first to change this. Not make it entirely inaccessible for basic survival enjoyment, but making it more split between simply surviving and then going on the entire adventure. As someone who enjoys the adventure and has plenty of great memories with BO3 (it was my first main Zombies that I picked up from release), I appreciate that inclusion, and I enjoy being able to complete the maps solo and with friends. But it’s also somewhat saddening, feeling as though you’re sort of ripped out of playing survival just to be able to accomplish a lot of these EE steps, especially considering how forward focused the EE’s were in each map (and the game overall). That’s why I prefer Town, because it’s the formula I most enjoy for basic survival (also first real game I played in the series), and then Origins (I play on BO3 for it now, but I don’t usually play with gums), because it perfected the EE formula for an adventure that works as an evolution of the map and the gameplay, and especially because it finished off the map (something you rarely got in any map in any Zombies game up to the point).

Classic zombie is still the only zombies I play. The theme of your doom slowly approaching is really reflected in the music Easter eggs. The new ones look so goofy with cartoonish villains and making the OG characters good guys. I liked when they were their own brand of evil, and the idea that they deserved this, but also “fuck you I refuse to die” motif.
@Peterphoskytos Жыл бұрын
That's the main reason I had that same feeling on MotD. Suddenly we weren't main characters. We were prisoners who simply said FY and refused to go down without a fight. Them dying in the cutscene rlly adds to the "this is a last performance before they die" and I'd imagine the cutscene. Yes there was the afterlife thing but I kind of just ignored it. At the end of the day, we were stuck there doomed to die. It wasn't the same atmosphere, but it was a good reminder of that og feeling zombies gave me
@Shiggy_ Жыл бұрын
@@Peterphoskytos ya they should’ve kept going with that. I understand you can’t just keep making it about the OG characters. But having different types of bad guys to play would’ve kept the theme. Like maybe a North Korean reeducation camp, Vietnam war or even an Iraq war themed one. Make the characters the worst people from both sides. Just like they did with WAW. I mean in the OG waw. Tank actually did collect Japanese body parts (which was a problem among American soldiers), Nikolai really did murder his wives when he got bored of them, and Takeo and Richofen don’t need much explaining lol.

I don’t dislike story modes changing, and I think the important thing is to know whether it was an appropriate gradual shift, which I believe it was. I don’t think, especially by BO4, it was handled perfectly (we never got a Great War map), but there was still inclusion of all prior content and a reason for everything (even if convoluted). The Kronorium helped add so much to everything. And I think that’s how it should work. Hero vs Villain, or Good vs Bad, to some degree. Even if not everyone preferred the more heroic nature of Primus, you still were left following this great adventure they all went on, and how their personalities clashed and they went about fixing problems they started or were involved in. That’s true for WW2, basically true for AW, and I think true for IW (I really didn’t play that game). New Zombies has operators and soulless entities, not merely in basic survival maps like Nacht, Town, or Nuketown, but as a part of their flesh and blood throughout every single story element. Goddamn campaign characters are there just to spice it up.

I love COD zombies with all my heart, it's a very special mode to me and the idea behind this video came from the differences between what I thought was the simpler era (WAW, BO1, and some of BO2) and the more flourishing era where zombies became much more mainstream and started tinkering with the core foundations. Black Ops 2 and 3 is where that started to change for me, and I very much still love those eras and will gladly make a video on them too if this one does well.

I still remember the first time I played zombies. As a kid I was normally behind when it came to consoles and games, I still had a ps2 in 2009 and didn't even know the ps3 had come out yet. It wasn't until my older brother's friend stayed the night I got to get a glimpse at a call of duty game, what would be my first call of duty, world at war. I waited for months until Christmas and there were only two things on my list that year a ps3 and call of duty world at war. Once I had gotten them I stayed up every night for days playing through the campaign enthralled by just how cool it was and how much it truly felt like playing through a blockbuster WWII movie like saving private ryan or band of brothers. Once I had completed the campaign and planted that flag next to Reznov I already knew this would be a defining experience in my life. But once the credits rolled and that cutscene played I thought to myself, "there's more?!?! It's not over?!?" I saw the crashed plane and the multiple figures in the distance and tried to think of some way it related to the campaign, how this could be the true conclusion to the story, maybe it was a special epilogue level for those that sat through the credits or maybe a secret ending that I somehow unlocked without knowing. But no, I knew exactly what it was the second I saw it. "Nazi Zombies" plastered on the screen, oozing with blood like an open wound. The amount of dread ifelt as I was dropped into nacht with no objective or guidance will always be with me. Then I saw the zombies coming, got scared when they broke through the barriers and promptly closed the game.

I wasn't even looking to do anything crazy, I just wanted PaP. But they made it so convoluted and random, that I sometimes have no choice but to Google what to do. I hate having to do that, but these newer games leave you with no choice. It also makes me wonder how anyone figured out what to do in the first place. Or am I really just that dumb. In the case of WWII zombies, on the final map. When trying to get PaP unlocked I ended up doing some of the Easter egg just screwing around. When all that was needed to unlock PaP was to just take 3 separate teleporters. It's crazy... But, with Cold War and such, they thankfully made it much simpler to get through basic map progression. Well... That's my piece, peace.

The one thing about zombies that I really don't like is the story. I understand why it's so fragmented and retcon-y, but it's just weird to look back at now and think about how much better it could've been. The best stories in zombies are ironically on 'isolated' maps that don't have too much to do with the main cast like Shadows and Mob.
@lrn5152 Жыл бұрын
Old Zombies tapped into horror themes MUCH more and the only comedy relief were the unhinged characters who had good reasons to be caricatures through lore. Aside from Origins and MotD (in fact, I think Mob is the best map) every map after BO1 has suffered from being far too goofy, colorful, objective-heavy, and full of overly complex lore changes. Zombies should've NEVER went Cthonic/Lovecraftian. Existential/occult horror is great but they did an absolutely trash job at implementing it later on. The best part was how supernatural the mode was early on and was amplified by Mob taking place in purgatory. Even still, they could've drip fed us with obscure lore but they went and made a cinematic multiverse. Knowing about the end of Zombies and how the timelines converged/diverged actually killed a lot of my opinions of the old map stories. It's like they couldn't think of anything cool besides "shadowy guy whose basically Satan/God has been pulling the strings this whole time!" When I was just fine learning about the Illuminati's involvement of the Moon project and creepy shit like that back in the day.

I can say with no doubt that BO1 is the best zombies game on an objective and subjective level. I never quite got to enjoy waw zombies (due to censorship) but i def. will someday since i still love it! However BO1 innovated so much and had such a vast map variety, good guns with good sounds and feeling to them. Easter eggs werent easy but not something you'd need to do ridiculous amounts of research for. BO2 was also pretty good in my opinion and came in with one of the best zombie maps ever (MOTD). BO3 zombies was better than i thought it was going to be at first but it feels off to me, crackhead zombies running at double the speed are not anxiety inducing but just annoying, the zombie speed and damage from earlier games was def. better, alongside the things that the video mentioned and a few others it simply can not hold up with previous titles in my book. What came after BO3 is not even worth mentioning if you ask me.

I have always said this, but I think Origins is what destroyed the original simplicity of zombies. It started immediately with the same cast we're familiar with, but from a different universe. I believe it all went downhill from here. I did not like Origins at all. It didn't feel like a classic zombies map. I felt pressured to do the complicated easter egg, and when I tried, there were just too many steps to follow. I understand Origins by itself is a great map, and I do like it, but it's just not a classic for me and it really upsets the balance in my opinion. From there it was a constant mess of multiple dimensions, rewriting history, trying to make stuff cannon that was previously just done for fun (original 4 in the waw maps in bo1 instead of generic soldiers)

The problem with games these days can be summed up in one word; money. Game developers used to care about the games they made. Now they know they can pump out trash and make just as much money so there is no reason to spend more time on it then they have too. I think the future of actually GOOD games lies in smaller passionate studios.

Call me an old man but I genuinely stopped enjoying zombies at Black Ops 3. I get it was the peak for many but once maps started requiring you to watch 4 hours of guides before playing them I gave up. I still play zombies from time to time but the newest I’ll go is Bo2.

How I sort of feel, but my cutoff would be around BO3-WW2, and I wanna play BO4 when I get the time for it, especially since most of the launch issues it had are resolved, and I can just enjoy it for what it is

As good and or interesting the black ops 3 maps were, the game ruined the lore or at least started the downfall when it moved away from shady shadow governments, conspiracy theories, and light mysticism. Actually bo2 origins might have started the downfall for the story

BO1 zombies will always be my favourite. I played BO2 zombies, but didn't enjoy it as much. I gave up on BO3 zombies. I wanted to enjoy it, but I just couldn't. Too much of a focus on complex Easter eggs and a silly, complex to follow story. Plus the maps and mechanics themselves got too complex for my liking.

If it wasn't for mods in Black ops III, WaW would easily have the best zombies with barley competition because It is the truest zombie game. It's none of the maps (except der riese) are about the story It's about survival and the most about horror Nacht and Vurruct or however you spell it are still scare me. It's so simple that anyone can play and understand, I hate games that are so complex you need to go to youtube and watch a movie length video on the basics ( cough cough Hearts of iron IV) I think that's why people like beta Minecraft or chapter 1 Fortnite or WaW/BO1 zombies because it's so simple unlike their successors. Im sorry for the giant rant but in summary WaW zombies good

Zombies Big KZbinrs Ruined COD = They Asked for them 💩 Changes, they just as at Fault for unfun zombies. Same happened in BO3 multiplayer "Blackhats" are basically Useless because of them complaining. Definitely a Pattern

Can’t blame YTers for everything. People played and continue to play BO3 just as many do with prior titles Edit: Also, I’m pretty sure Blackhats were overpowered. A lot of balancing changes come for a reason

Going with generic shitty lovecraft tentacle monsters because of one map ruined the rest of the series and the story they spent two games building

Jimmy Zielinski did drop the ball on Tranzit and Die Rise, and it switched to Blundell for a reason. They both had high ambitions, but Blundell was able to deliver and nailed it on things a lot of people love. It wasn’t really just for one map, it was for what he could do and what had in his mind for plans.

Great video and agree completely. They did what they often do, try and fix something that wasn’t broke. The original simplicity is what made the game perfect. Gobblegum was just a way of getting money from the fanbase.

Before easter eggs. I hate easter eggs. I hate black ops 2, it's literally unplayable unless you do easter eggs.

how such a good simple story could turn so impossibly and tiredly complex is beyond me. loved early zombies. but it will always be a let down to me with how the story went. i played origins and decided I had to let go of the hope the story would ever make any sense at all…that in my mind was their chance to make things make sense, and all we got was more confusion. the zombies were toys? its all a child’s game? the simpler era and all its possibilities will always be my favorite.
