This is such a beautiful clip. I typed over the last 2 minutes for myself, perhaps it's of use to someone: Self inquiry is a kind of unveiling of Consciousness - Consciousness veils itself with its own activity untill it stands revealed as it essentially is. The hint in each of our finite minds, of Consciousness as it is, is the knowledge 'I am'. It's a trace God has left in each of our hearts to remind us of His presence. ('I am' is a hint God has placed in our minds.) That's why Ramana Maharshi's version of self inquiry was the question 'who am I'. That's why Nisargadatta's formulation of self inquiry was 'focus on the I am'. Take the thought 'I', go to the experience to which you refer when you say 'I am'. That is a portal, as it were. It's the means by which the mind is gradually divested of its limitations and stands revealed as infinite Consciousness. That's why 'I am' is said to be God's name.

The challenge as always with all the Masters is that for each sentence they utter - one has to go sit down for a couple weeks to see the reality in ourselves but instead the inclination as a result of the pace of life is to click on the next video to see if there's somehow a shortcut. There's none. I say this to myself always - 'go practice what you heard!' Also just like Calculus just because what the teacher did 'made sense' does not mean you understood it - go take the practice test, go sit down for an hour and face your demons - on the mat, that's where the real learning begins.

@Michael W.: No it's not. You missed the whole point of this video. Zazen is not the same as this teaching. Zazen "watching" is practice using attention. This teaching is about relaxing the use of attention . . .
@michaelw.29094 жыл бұрын
@@QED_ please elaborate your point, I'd like to understand the difference your are addressing. Zazen is about relaxing also, because in watching thought ...the emphasis is in doing nothing. So, the practitioner is not pushing, pulling, judging, or reacting to the thought which is arising. This elicits NON RESISTENCE .. which is also yoga. It's going from reacting to thought ... to non reaction .. allowing. Thanks in advanced for sharing

@@michaelw.2909 I'm not a teacher -- I'm just sharing my own experience (including 30 years of Zazen). And I find that there's a subtle difference (that I didn't appreciate for years and years and years) between the (inadvertent) creation of a "watcher" who does the "watching" . . . and "abiding" and "effortless" awareness with no such watcher. In the latter there's no watcher . . . no watching . . . no doing . . . and no "doing nothing". Here's another Spira video about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWTLnoCrnM6kfck

@@QED_ this second video seems to be pointing towards a similar method used and advocated by Nisargadatta Maharaj. Which is simply focusing on the I am. It might be very long and tiring path if you give question Who am I ? but mind attracted by this question because it gives abstract attraction and mind always interested into abstract questions which make it busy and when mind is busy , it will give some relaxation. It is good question when you are lost , when you did everything and when you become so tired and then this question brings clarity.. but usually you will be trapped into cobweb of mind because you do not know about unknown I . You have no such sensitivity. It is better to give direct approach That is not I. so leave all thoughts and everything which does not belong to you , then what remains in the end is only You, then you will find Who am I?. When Who and I meet , then question disappear forever.

I get that we are not the body-mind, but the awareness behind all that, but how do you explain the fact that with a healthy body and a healthy mind abiding as awareness *seems* to be so much easier? Like it's easier to be spiritual or something (for lack of a better word)?
@curiosity_saved_the_cat5 жыл бұрын
You're assuming one is the result of the other (because of a healthy body and mind, it' easier to abide to awareness). Maybe it arises at the same time; what you consider to be healthy is in it's own abidance to awareness.
@SuperMarco95955 жыл бұрын
As you said, it only seems to be easier, in reality there is no actual difference. But, as you rightly noticed, it is more likely that the deidentification from the body-mind happens when there is a certain balance within the system. I think that that's because in the absence of this equilibrium, the primal impulse that we all have is self preservation. The priority of the biological system is to preserve its existence and survive (both physically and psychologically as an identity or ego), so our mind emotions and activities are brought to that. The "spiritual life" (that is not strictly related to survival and on the countrary it kills our sense of personal identity) seems to come easier when the basic needs are balanced and in place.
@SuperMarco95955 жыл бұрын
@UCJjr1gtIyk9IAjRCxtpwlYw don't misunderstand what's been said, spirituality and love for the Truth isnt at all dependent on the well-being of the bodymind. On the countrary, a lot of times illness and suffering can make a person spiritual, I've seen this directly in my personal experience. It all depends on the individual, if he's ready or not. Ultimately speaking the seeking of our true Self is indipendent from "external factors" (life situation, health ecc), it's all about the willingness to look within and find your true nature :)
@TheJooberjones5 жыл бұрын
Because it is easier. Rupert does not discuss the fact that the vast majority of people are struggling to survive paycheck to paycheck and do not have thousands of disposable income to attend retreats. When you look at the hierarchy of needs, basic survival comes first. Spiritual pursuit comes last. There is nothing special or difficult about enlightenment, but the conditions for it to take place need to be met first. Not surprisingly, this is extraordinarily difficult (but not impossible) for most people if all their time and energy is consumed by finding their next meal or paying their next bill. Thats why I say that this teaching is a bit premature. What we need is to take care of ourselves and each other provide a basic social contract of compassion, and then we will be in the position to evolve as a species, which is what enlightenment is after all. But I suppose one goes hand in hand with the other and these two things can move forward simultaneously.

That is all in your mind my friend, not your true seeing, or reaction/response. Who is the one writing this, and being serious about it. Who is the one with the problem, just look without 'forcing' and see what arises in the spaciousness that you inherently are. What arises are these thoughts, the drama that plays out and creates a concept, possible conclusion and what arises is the mind-structures discontent with What Is, in this case something about this video, that make your mind out to say that the self feel limited. The self cannot be made out to feel constricted in any way. What I'm saying here, with compassion and possibly a unsuccessful delivery of words to explain what I actually mean, is that in all situations, all times in life, including this comment and reaction, is to pay attention to who's the one reacting, being bothered in any shape and form etc. Self inquiry as much and true as possible, and the new "auto-pilot" of existing in this body for a brief time in this form, can becoming united as one, without the duality of needing to have this or that, certain conditions, for one's perceived needs to met, so one can enjoy, relax, learn or otherwise. I know what you mean though, as my own mind "kicks in" strong sometimes, or often, I'd love to take part of the whole dynamic, synergy of the "atmosphere" of a room, a gathering like this, to "really get the feeling" and sink easier into the experience. Sometimes, not always. And of course, it is just not needed, but for example I know that this mind is drawn to Sadghuru videos where he is present with people on stage being shown, and people asking things in the audience etc. A certain ambiance of the senses that can make one feel it is easier to get into "the moment", the actual now, and not be in mind projections endlessly ( like most are ). much luv
@JonasAnandaKristiansson5 жыл бұрын
@@wojciechstefaniak3541 Yes, I think this is a key thing to many of these "gatherings". For people to really remain, or have a bigger chance to stay in 'presence' without extra risk for the fear- and pain body to show up and block the "experience", to really take "it" in, it is 'safer' to keep cameras and focus off of the questioner, the seeker or what have you.

We don't create reality, reality simply is what it is, and so is the essence of what we 'are', which is just that - eternal energy in motion, from a certain way of talking about it. He doesn't state those things, those are your suggestions, possible conclusions of what is being said. Many things, our mind can misunderstand, and it happens close to all the time, and certainly when it comes to Buddha's ( awakened beings, who no longer are limited by form and time and space, but have realized our shared essence of Being ) they are in particular "misunderstood", as the mind cannot grasp, truly perceive that which is beyond the mind, the space beyond body and mind which is observing all of it, all of existence and the complete interconnectedness one is with "all things", which is beyond "things" as physical objects. But in short, he does not at core speak about anything regarding religion or any of the mind projected- and created stuff.
