A Simpsons parody of "Theme from New York, New York". Definitely a modern classic. (From the episode "D'oh Canada"; S30 E21, aired on Fox on April 28, 2019.)

I disagree with the comment about never being great. It WAS great but systemically destroyed starting in the 1950's and accelerating in the 1970's through deindustrialization and the movement of the commercial districts to the malls. You see glimpses of the Golden Age in the Victorian Downtown remnants and the surviving community art and social institutions. Those beautiful building took MONEY. Those orchestras and schools and parks took money. Lots and lots of Money. And that came from a strong industrial base that was shut down and sent overseas. The countrysides are beautiful and I learned that during my travels to Salmanca, Delta, Nunda, Ithaca, Ironqequoite, Sodus Point, SKAneatles, and along the Erie, Ontario, Champlain, and Hudson River Coasts. So yes, I do laugh at the skit, but it's brittle and sad laugh.

Spot on. Upstate would have had a chance if all the tax dollars didn’t go to NYC. Glad I got out 5 years ago.

Lake Placid, Clinton, Oneida, Saratoga Springs, Cooperstown and others are all adorable. The economy is depressed especially after the closure of Griffiss Air Force Base and a bunch of other wrongheaded government policies. Some of this song is true, but not the part that there is no cute part of Upstate NY. I don't live there anymore, but I still love it.

A few towns over celebrates loved it...dead..Mark Twain is burried. Celebrate also came to a famous spa. That were in the days of Laurel and Hartey (actually visited) Thank diety I left

The only innacurate part is how lenient the smokies are. Other than that 100 percent true.
Best part? This isn’t a joke. This is really what it’s like here.

This is funny but honestly, this is everywhere in the United States except the big cities and tech hubs. Upstate just gets shit on harder because people compare it to nyc. New York state is actually nicer than any of the surrounding states PA CT NJ VT etc and has way more culture and natural beauty. Just saying. Great song tho 😂

I love that they have the Borsht Belt! That's Sullivan County, NY - my former home! It's a parody and obviously there are great things about upstate New York (if you love the outdoors) but this is funny!

It never had a fancy part but at least it had an economic purpose. That's mostly disappearing. My first girlfriend lived in Endicott when it was IBM country (70s and 80s). In 2002, IBM closed its Endicott manufacturing plant and left behind an enormous underground chemical plume. I suspect the main thing keeping people rooted in Endicott is the near-impossibility of selling their houses. Multiply that by Kodak, Carrier, GE and countless smaller companies.

IBM closing killed the Hudson Valley.... but luckily, the financiers screwed NYC rents and real estate prices so bad, the boroughs moved as far North as the Metro North runs so... bully for those homeowners trying to sell.

I was born in Brooklyn but we moved to upstate ny when I was 6 after my dad died to live near my moms family near where she grew up in Fulton country. I had an amazing childhood and great teenage years there. Realized there was no opportunity and moved back to NYC and have lived here for years now. Recently went upstate for vacation during this COVID mess to get away and it was so refreshing, the people were incredibly nice and welcoming and I stayed at an amazing place in Amsterdam called Amsterdam castle. Anyone who wants. 4 star insanely unique experience should check it out. There is now a little riverfront pedestrian bridge and the view of the sunset over the Erie Canal was breathtaking. Everywhere we went people were kind and social and it was so much nicer than I remembered. Yes I’ve been cooped up here for months but I so enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Food options were better than years ago and the countryside is gorgeous. The plight of the area makes me sad, my best memories are from when I lived there. I loved the Adirondacks even in the harsh winters. Upstate never recovered after industry collapsed and left nothing. I think that most people who do hard labor type of jobs and/or work with their hands are conservative. They realize the value of hard work and they seem to have more traditional values. I will always love the Adirondack region and the foothills around it.
@cnygrrl11 күн бұрын
It is strange how our labor is devalued... when without it, nothing would work. My dh is an industrial/commercial electrician. He knows how to make buildings function. Nothing would get done without people like him. Imagine if we didn't have HVAC mechanics. Those freaking indoor cats of society would die.
