The Singing Island Of Arranmore [Full Documentary]

I was fortunate enough to be invited to the remote Island of Arranmore off the coast of Co.Donegal, to take part in a traditional music festival in honor of a very special Islander, Róise Rua or Róise na nAmhrán.
Róise was born in 1879 in Sheshkinarone, near Dungloe. After her father’s death in 1883, her mother (who was originally from Arranmore) married Antain Gallagher, “An Búistéir”, and the family moved back to the island. Arranmore remained Róise’s home for the rest of her life, until her death in 1964. “An Búistéir”, was a great storyteller and people flocked to their house to hear his stories. Róise’s mother, Maighréad, had a great repertoire of songs, which she passed on to Róise. Róise, herself, became well known on the island for her singing, and people would often visit her home ‘ag airneáil’. It was Pádraig Ua Cnáimhsí, a local school teacher, who first drew widespread attention to her wealth of song and story in the early 1950s. He wrote her biography, from her own telling, transcribed many of her songs, and wrote to the Irish Folklore Commission about her. As a result, Seán Ó hEochaidh, from the Folklore Commission, came to collect songs from Róise in 1953, and returned again with Leo Corduff, Proinsias Ó Conluain and Jimmy Mahon from Raidió Éireann, who recorded 60 of Róise’s songs. These recordings were salvaged in the early 1990s and a selection of them edited and released by Cathal Goan, under the title Róise na nAmhrán: Songs of a Donegal Woman.

Galanta! Stunning songs, singers and pipes presented from such a magical island. Peigi Rogers my great great gran left Arranmore for the Donal Nancie’s on Cruit Island where she married Seimi Doney Cathach Doherty. From there my great grand father John Doherty left with such melancholy for San Francisco. A very warm remembrance and love of Bridie and Donal Doherty of Mullaghdubh who took us on a hill walk round the lovely Arranmore.

O'Donnell from Arranmore now in the U.S. I always get giddy and excited when I meet a Gallagher here as though I ran into a fellow O'Donnell in far away lands. Always get disappointed when they know more about the fruit-smashing comedian (may he rest in peace) than they do their own damn name.

Myles. Me da Hugh Joseph Gallagher son of francis Gallagher whom emigrated to bayonne nj along with his sister ,sister alma our aunt beatrice survives Hanah and Anthony are with the holy spirit. Friday last my father had a stroke. This allowed time for our family and I to be at his bedside.unconsious he could still hear ,I played this work of yours which attached he and I to the island of our roots.thank God you sacrificed time in your life to make the journey of singing that made it to midland Park New Jersey where our family home has been since 1965 the continuity until Wednesday morning of his peaceful passing for me no monarchy could interfere with the artitst music to our ears .so get ready for me cousins joining patreon to support your work.
