My great uncle was a lookout on the Titanic his name was Archie Jewell. He survived when ordered to man one of the life boats. He also survived the sinking of the Britannic only to loose his life on the SS Donegall which was sunk by a German submarine on April 17th 1917

Interesting fact about the grand staircase sinking scene; the actor playing Mr. Astor does such a good job looking terrified is because he actually is. The scene triggered traumatic childhood memories in him and he had to get therapy afterwards. He later revealed that as a toddler he survived the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, a somewhat similar ocean liner mistaken for a troop transport and sunk during WW2, killing almost ten thousand people. The rushing water and panicking trapped people in the scene brought back his memories of the terrible final moments of that ship.

"Mistaken" would imply the Germans made an effort to mark the ship as non-military, but with no white paint or red crosses and the weapons out in the open they really didn't try to mark her as a hospital ship. And nearly 2,000 of the people on board were able-bodied military, so sadly it kinda was acting like a military transport and just by transporting military personal legally they gave up any protections laid out by international accords.
