These are helpful. Thank you! I am really bad at this and have struggled for years with it. Swearing is pretty common in my family, unfortunately. I am frequently apologizing for the slip up. But maybe not as much as say 4 months ago. Looking for an alternative and being giving unhelpful moralizing to convince me to mend my vocabulary as if I have not been struggling and feeling bad enough already. The last couple of years has only aggravated it as much as I would like to say otherwise. At this point I am considering not speaking unless necessary as penance because I can’t seem cut the swearing out completely.

But unfortunatelu whenever I get frustratred, sad or angry I tend to have awful thoughts that sometimes get close to blasphemies, for example when I'm frustrated I might think: "I hope I die soon and go to hell because that's where i'm going anyways" and in the worst cases things like> "Christ died cause he wanted to, so I don't have to be grateful for anything, etc" It's quite hard because I often have some faith crises (Often have crisis after periods of fervor in faith, weirdly) and I don't really know how to control my thoughts and despair

I used to work in an office where the guys used every blasphemy in the book. One man had a terminal illness and I said, "Instead of using God's Holy Name in vain, you should beg His forgiveness while you can still talk!" He had scleroderma. I also told all of them there would be no blasphemy in the area of my desk!

It is a wonderful devotion to make praying the Divine Praises a habit in order to make reperation for the constant taking of The Lord's name in vain and the blasphemes against Our Lady. Also, to do it at the moment you hear it, or do it oneself. Exorcist Fr. Chad Ripperger says that anytime we hear this in a movie, tv etc we must turn it off and not continue to watch it, and I suggest immediately praying The Divine Praises When you get into this habit, you will be made aware of how often we are surrounded by this! If in a situation that you can't pray that immediately, I suggest praying, "Father, Son and Holy Spirit praised by your name!"

Something at work happened, and I said OmGod, and immediately wanted to cry. There was no time to stop and pray for forgiveness, though in my heart I did. It was said in a moment of concern, so I'm not sure if even then it is a do not say, but will speak with my priest on it, and withhold from communion until I know I am back in God' graces. I use "oh snap" alot, it's super cheesy and outdated but it took me FOREVER to unlearn the potty mouth I had🤷‍♀️ so much so that when other people use the language too much (or movies use The Lord's name) it feels like someone punched my spirit in the face. Devout Jews, I believe, still do not mention God's sacred name even in prayer. I myself struggle with this and I'm working towards not even using alternatives because it's too close to keep me from slipping up. An addict should not move from narcotics to alcohol. So often, when people are angry or frustrated, their words are effectively calling upon God to bring about a curse by asking for him to bring damnation upon a person, thing, or situation. Then, when things get worse, their anger and frustration escalates. Many just spout out the words without thinking of the meaning, so the intent is often lacking. But if one wants a better situation to arise, it would be better to ask for God's blessings on the situation, rather than seeking his curse. The request for blessing is more of a prayer, as long as it has the intention of bringing a blessing. Of course, even blessings are sometimes abused, such as the phrase "bless your heart" in the American South. Sometimes the phrase can be an authentic blessing. But it is often used more sarcastically in a way that is not loving or well-intentioned. Despite not always calling upon God, similar to those who drop God from the request to bring damnation to "it", we know that God brings blessings and is the ultimate judge, so God is implied in each of those phrases, even if dropped. Let our yes be yes and no be no, and let our anger be tempered. Do not try to change God to gosh or the name of Jesus to jeez.

I was horrified to hear my own family cursing using Christ as a curse word. I am a complete outsider in my family. I am so horrified. The constant cursing. I did not know that OMG 😳 was a sin. What I heard from my family members was incredibly vulgar. I was so depressed I looked up a video, to confirm my innate feelings. The F words are used constantly in my family and worse. Why is anger a sin? Jesus got angry when he overturned the tables in the temple. That’s a pretty bad temper. I have yet to overturn a table and spill it’s contents when I am mad. I might say the “D” word or lately the “F” word because I have frustration issues. I might say “Good lord”, but lord doesn’t necessarily mean God. In some movies depicting history I hear people calling a king or prince, or someone in authority over them “ lord”. So, the word lord isn’t necessarily God. It’s a generic word for any authority figure.

When my husband would get super angry, he said the most horrendous blasphemy. I pray the Golden Arrow and "Admirable is the name of God" quietly while the rant went on. I have prayed a prayer of deliverance from Fr. Ripperger's book for him. It has worked wonders, praise God. He now rarely has those outbursts, and they are milder (although still very bad). I know how hard this sin is to speak out against as I, like many others, try to battle it in the workplace. I would try to tell him that the use of blasphemy indicates a lack of self-control and refinement as well as a gross lack of respect and ingratitude towards God, the highest authority there is. I remember a Marine who used profanity profusely. When a nun in a habit walked into the room and spoke to him, not one word of profanity left his lips. Once she left, he went back to his profanity. He claimed he couldn't help but use profanity. Let's pray for him. He was 100% disabled with PTSD.

This isnt what the commandment means. What is it to do something in vain? Without fruit, thats it. So it means dont claim to be christian if you dont give yourself fully to Yeshua. Using Gods name as a curse word falls under "honor thy father and mother"
