As someone below has already stated, this is the performance from UK BBC2 TV show "Whistle Test" (note: the programme had dropped the "Old Grey" prefix by now) recorded on 3rd April 1985. They also did "First And Last And Always" too.

In this version he's almost pleading "Marian'-in later versions it's more his signature dark angry howl. One of my favorite songs. Would be interesting to know who inspired it. I have a feeling bad breakups and ex's have inspired more great music than we can imagine! I know I wrote some of the darkest shit after my breakups.

Marian was a female acquaintance in Hamburg Germany who he shared his habits with and hung around with - an unfortunate unacquainted love on behalf of Mr Taylor ( Marian was doing drugs while on a bounce & break up cycle with her then boyfriend Felix Männlicher ) .

the lyric "save me, save me from the grave" means 'save me from the (younger and boring imitators of clothing, style etc) the boring Goths / grave' according the A.A. in an interview. Personally I always thought it was so, another cleaver joke, insight from a smart front-man.

The sound "superior" in this version perhaps come in the fact that this version is the music made in first place for the original song ... I refeer to "Wasteland", that Eldricht take and change the lyrics to transform it into "Marian"... I like both songs, Indeed!!
