I totally agree with you. It is like Western Utd in the A-League...... west of what? Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne etc.
@joshanderson93915 күн бұрын
At least they were a new club that had no history. Sutherland sharks had been around for 90 years
@CHEDZvlrt5 күн бұрын
West of Melbourne, it's pretty obvious.

legit thought the west - perth games were a derby game when i watched a west home game and its in the middle of nowhere lmao

@@CHEDZvlrt No it isn’t lol. It’s a stupid name with no identity attached to it whatsoever 😂

Just came here to agree with the title, thanks algorithm. Stupidest most ridiculous fkn situation I have ever seen in NPL/A-League/Australia football.

They ditched the wrong part of the name.

Sutherland Shire Football Association is also the largest junior association in the southern hemisphere. People talk about the Cronulla Sharks NRL team, but the Sutherland Shire is football first, daylight second then perhaps rugby league.

In Sydney, there is a distinct difference between the subregions of Sydney (from socio-economic, ethnic makeup etc.) To not lean into the subregion label is stupid. I would be surprised if the decision maker was not even from Sydney lol.
@morbintime-l4i3 күн бұрын
shire local my entire life. when talking about the nrl team its sharks and when talking about the football team its sutho sharks. say sutho sharks to anyone in the shire and they instantly know you mean football/soccer asinine name change

How much money comes in and out of an NPL NSW club? It can't be that big that they'd have a corporate PR office right? So I'd be skeptical of exactly how much this is out of touch suits. Like, this still isn't even in the same stratosphere as BOS Nation
@ALeagueCouchCritics5 күн бұрын
Didn’t know what BOS Nation was until now. Wish I didn’t.

Remember Illawarra/Wollongong Hawks a few years back in the NBL when it was thought a good idea to think about call them Hawks. Didn't go through. Here could it mean the club could move to another location if better economic factors occur
@2_pelicans4 күн бұрын
Thats because of money, i. Assume sharks aren't that level of broke
@bozwhite4 күн бұрын
@2_pelicans either way crazy move as it does open the door to the club moving away from the shire. As no real geographical marker for the team
@jacklang33145 күн бұрын
Yeah, this has me fuming. It makes no sense whatsoever, especially given the sporting context of the Shire. Is it because of the fact that Pipe King isn't going to be a major sponsor for that much longer?
@whitt56765 күн бұрын
For me, they are getting the club ready for the A-league/Second Tier. A very similar move was made to the Dolphins in the Brisbane area when they entered the NRL. I suspect it's to capture the Cronulla base alongside Southern Sydney and not cap it as much-something Macarthur should have done coming into the league.

You know the funny things, I associate the shark as being shire linked in terms of Sydney sport that I didn’t even think of the fact that they actually ditched the region name altogether. I really liked the branding but then you mention this, I’m kinda disappointed cause they actually missed out on owning that brand of being part of “The Shire” the surf culture and elements of Cronulla has the potential on the online space to have a cult following outside of Sydney.

I don't like when clubs drop the place name, they kinda lose their identify and I actually think it has the reverse effect of gaining fans because people can't support an area/city where they are from or live. Should be the Redcliffe Dolphins and the Sutherland Sharks.

If they think it's valuable and important to growing their brand then why can't they? What actual issue do you have with it. When they explain why they made this decision you call it Stupid PR Jargon and say you don't understand why they did it. It doesn't matter.
@ALeagueCouchCritics5 күн бұрын
My issue is the name change is stupid, which I made pretty clear. All that PR jargon is a load of crap. Whatever reason they believe they made it for, the club is throwing away the name of the community it represents.
