Not so fun fact: Elena Mukhina, a very promising young Soviet gymnast, broke her neck after being pressured to add the Thomas Salto to her routine in 1980. She was paralyzed at just 20-years-old, a quadriplegic for life, and died from complications of her injury in 2006, age 46.
@emoskimo3 жыл бұрын
To add to this, she broke her leg prior to this and the doctor forced to take the cast off early before she started training for the Thomas Salto. This caused his leg to give out
@juliannah57213 жыл бұрын
She tried so hard to tell them she couldn't perform, but the soviets wouldn't listen. And people wanted to give Biles a hard time for stepping out due to the same reason.

My stepfathers older brother became quadriplegic at 16 because he landed wrong while practicing gymnastics. We're all amazed when we realize he has lived 2x as long as he was expected to and has so far survived 2 of his 6 siblings. When Simone pulled out, there was not any negative talk from anyone in my family because we've seen what the result is from a bad landing. It's people who've never seen or dealt with the aftermath of a bad landing that think gymnasts should compete when they're not confident they can do it safely

I think that Elena would have been crippled or killed doing another equally dangerous skill. She had a broken leg and her coaches refused to allow her time to heal. She couldn't say no. Soviet coaches back then had complete control of their athletes. She was made a quadriplegic doing the Thomas Salto, but on a broken leg any acrobatic skill could have killed her.

@@opdgrow4life The Olympic body takes into careful consideration of what they put under their criteria (e.g. scope and limitations of each sport). There is already a Thomas Salto-related death. Moreover, there is an influx of gymnasts who already got injured from it. The type of injury also counts. Gymnastics itself, like any other sport already comes with risks. Olympic heads, or any other sports name always revise rules for standardization. Health and welfare of the athletes are top priority in the recent years.
