During 2018 and 2019 Robin Lucas, archeologist
at Upplandsmuseet, visited all 423 of Uppsala county’s
outdoor standing runestones. Many of them are hidden
behind trees, are unreadable, covered in lichen, or have
tilted. Through this survey of the stones’ condition, the
County Administrative Board (who is responsible for the
care of the runestones) and the museum can better plan
how to take care of this unique cultural heritage.
Each stone was photographed and registered with a GPS.
An assessment was done based on damage, growth of
moss and lichen, as well as visibility of the coloring.
