I remember the car reviewers really panning the old fashioned feel, and saying the depreciation was terrible. The usual advice was to buy a 1 year old Escort or Astra instead. I'm glad somebody ignored the advice and bought this one!

Always liked the styling of this car! Nice colour! The last true Skoda. The elegant simplicity is truly amazing. Sometimes I wonder why this kind of car ceased to exist. It's 90% SUV or cross-over on the roads these days..

If you owned a SUV or cross-over you would understand. Last true skoda correct the felicia was really just a MK3 GOLF. I've been in a favorite they were cheap but a MK4 escort was so much better and worth every extra penny. I have driven a R reg 1.6 felicia. A blue estate one.

I had a '91 Favorit LS estate and a facelift LXi hatch before getting into Volvo 300's. They were both great, particularly the earlier estate car (bar the interior quality). The boot was huge for a mid sized car, it was very reliable and economical... To the point a 360 GLT didn't really feel like much of an upgrade! The LS even had a rechargeable torch in the boot. That particular car in your video looks in lovely condition.

Thanks for this. A great video. I suppose the other thing to remember is that the Favorit’s contemporary rivals were the Yugo Sana and Lada Samara, and the Favorit was a much better put together package overall. I think this was the nicest colour and suited the Favorit best. Interestingly I have the brochures from the early 90s when the Skoda badge was still offset. The original Forum actually had a slightly different centre cap on the rims and a clock rather than a rev counter. I was always a fan of the Forum Plus, which had a few extra niceties such as a radio cassette and rear wash/wipe.
@AlejjSi
@AlejjSi 2 ай бұрын
This centre cap on this car is a modernised look that came about in the late 1990/early 1991. So on this car it would have been standard.

11:38 The middle switch is also for air distribution, swing left for closed, swing right to open air on the feet. Cold or hot depending on how you operate hat bottom switch. 11:46 I'm quite sure that if you carefully pop that cover off, you might fing a 12V old style socket there. It should be standard on all models. Later post facelift GLX had a new standard 12V socket like we get today, while the LX retained this old one like this one should have 🙂 14:20 that is a ventilation hole for the air to exit from the car. Later post facelift cars had this hole in the door under the door lock.

Cool find! I remember as a pre-teen car nerd thinking how dorky these were - the basic styling put it in the same headspace for me as a Maestro or an early Fiat Uno, rather than a much cooler, I don'r know, 205 or even R6 Metro. Obviously a different price point, but the Rover R8 is about the same age, and they feel 10 years apart. I had no idea the Favorit had so many neat details - thanks for sharing!

I guess these cars (the few that have survived, at least) are now getting the kind of respect and appreciation they never got in period. As you've rightfully pointed out, this was an early-80s design launched at the tail end of the decade, when everyone was done with sharp edges and that aesthetic had fallen hard out of fashion. Add to that the inevitable badge snobbery, and it's no wonder the Favorit never got much respect. Wouldn't have seen me dead in one back then, but I'd rock one now!

Always admired the Favorit. Although you might call it bland, I admire that modernist, chunky aesthetic, especially the wheel arches and the bold crease on the sides which reminds me of the Talbot Tagora. I remember one of the ads for this car boasting about the spaciousness by saying it had more rear legroom than the BMW 5Series. I also remember reading in Autocar that the original Bertone proposal had been more rakish but the Czech government had intervened and demanded utility be prioritised. Another factlet is that Skoda was moderately profitable in this era yet when VW bought them, VW were making huge losses and may have paid slightly too much having been in a bidding war with Renault.

I loved these. I remember a ‘Car’ article that came out testing a 136LS in around 1989 (I was 8 then - I didn’t see the article until about 12). It showed that at the import centre they screwed on the door cappings for the higher level models, plus installed a sunroof and better stereo/centre console. I would like to own one of these or a Felicia at some point. Those Renault 10 inspired OHV engines dating back to the MB1000 were marvellous. We’ve been to the museum in Mlada Bolislav. Went on the tour and have the book. Oh yes we are a pair of sad gays 🎉. PS scrap yards in CZ should be a great source for the absent headrests.

I suppose the thing to remember is that, most likely, the customer for this car isn’t going to be choosing between this & a 90’s car. They were probably picking this or a 2 or 3 year old Fiesta or Escort, so the exposed metal or older engine wouldn’t have been so much in focus. They were indeed a great little car, and a big step up from the Estelle!

These were brilliant. Had two, and 3 Felicias. Had an L reg - had 100k on the clock when I got it and it was tight as a nut. I’ve held a soft spot ever since - I would love to get my hands on one. Considering other cars on sale at that time - all those people who blindly went for Escort/Astra/Maestro etc. were daft and missing out on a product that was likely to be far more reliable, practical, and cheap. What I loved about the Felicia was that it was unashamedly just a light refresh of the Favorit. Softened exterior and interior panels but the dash was just this with a rounded top stuck on the top of it - the core of this dashboard was probably one of the most solid mouldings I’ve ever come across in a car. The headlight adjusters were quite novel - but sadly prone to failure as that dial had behind it a hydraulic ‘gubbins’ attached to little plastic pipes - the hydraulic action acted to adjust the headlight body when you turned it. A neat and somewhat premium component to have in a budget car and every model had it. The overhead panel was another example of them over engineering stuff - this was lost on the Felicia which went down the standard full moulded headlining and a simple set of mirrors but the Favorit had this - and I agree, very Citroen-esque. Which makes sense given the designer also came up with the BX. Interesting fact on the BX - that design before it was a Citroen was destined to be what became BL’s Maestro. The eejits at BL rejected it like they did so many other history changing potential models.

I was too young to drive when the Favorit and Felicia were new or around in significant numbers. As a kid, you don't normally appreciate such shitboxes. But when i saw the first Felicia Kombi, there was a glitch in the matrix and i went from d[ - _ - ]b to d[ ^ - ^ ]b . Yes ! Not the hatch, The Kombi !! No idea why. I also liked the pickup a lot (i always found light, car-based pickups interesting for some reason), but the hatch ended too abruptly or something, in my teen eyes. When they facelifted it to the more Volkswagen-esque, Octavia-style new front i went back to d[ - _ - ]b

My brother had the higher spec model on a K Reg for years, bought it when it was six moths old, ex demonstrator. The sunshine roof was a tilt/removable thing so where you mentioned "perhaps space for sunroof controls" is not accurate but it is understandable. The sunshine roof was added at the import centre in Kings Lynn I believe along with other extras such as alloy wheels, the in car entertainment unit, the aerial for the radio was in an element in the glass. I think it also had front fog lamps fitted in the front bumper as standard which again, I believe were added on arrival in UK. It served him well as he has no mechanical sympathy and no interest in cars. We went many places in it and it never let him down. Even though it was perhaps a little old fashioned, they were a very underrated little car and good value.

Being a hopeless traditionalist,and purist, I remember feeling very sad when production of one of my favourite childhood cars, the lovely Škoda 105, 120, 130, and Rapid range ended in 1990. However also being an obsessive Škoda enthusiast, I soon warmed to the incoming Favorit, sadly though I never owned one. My first, of many, Škoda’s, was a Felicia L, bought in 1999. Although the body shape had been refreshed, the engine, ignition barrel, some of the switch gear, and even lower dashboard panels were straight from the Favorit, so I kind of owned a Favorit in certain ways❤.

Great video of a great car! It's crazy to think this car was going to be scrapped all not too long ago and we were so glad to save it - we did a fair bit of work to the engine to get it back up to health but it's running oh so well now and Simon is the perfect custodian for this car. He's brought it even further in terms of its condition and is using it as it should be and getting it to shows! The Favorit is a fantastic car and you've covered it all very well, I really do hope they get more appreciation because they are getting so thin on the ground, especially those earlier ones! It's nice to see "Henry" (H reg ending PKW) our old red 136 LS with the early grille make a very small appearance too, we did very much enjoy that car also and have had plenty of Favorits although that one went to pastures new and unfortunately I haven't seen it all too much since it went. Well done Sion a great video on the Favorit I remember going with my brother to see one to replace his talbot horizon it was a lot of car for the money and in upper trim you had nice two tone paint and a lot of equipment. There was lots of space inside Paul eventually had an Astra but he did seriously consider a favorit and many people bought them due to competitive price but Skoda did unnecessarily suffer in the UK because of the reputation it had and often the cars were much better than this as you saw Paul didn’t buy one because of the badge which seems silly now If I am correct Sion I think with the fuel gauge you can turn it around between 4 star and unleaded on the early ones Great to see one now and it will we the start of the modern Skoda brand probably the last true Skoda

In the brochure for this model it shows that this has a clock instead of a rev counter. Models with a rev counter came with a digital clock behind the interior light. I suspect the instruments may have been replaced at some time, as there is a warning light for the front fog lights too. I had a 1995 GLXie which I loved. My favourite to have would be the 1990/91 136LS. The almost 'Petale' design front seats are wonderful & they were rather nippy for their time. The fact that the rear seat is easily removeable makes them super practical too.

Excellent review! I always liked the Favorit, a fresh and neat design, and it gave me the feeling that Skoda had done their very best to create a car that caught up with the competition without just imitating them. Like if it was designed by engineers as if it would be the last car they ever worked on, instead of the competitions engineers who went to work half asleep and drag themselves from one meeting to the next. The engine would outlive the Felicia as well and was even used in the Fabia. Not quite sure but it could even have made its way into other VW products of the time.

The Favorit was designed by a team headed by a very capable engineer of the name Petr Hrdlička, who was, as a matter of fact son of Karel Hrdlička, who was the boss of Skoda i the 30's and made it the biggest Czechoslovak car manufacturer. Young Petr Hrdlička worked for years in a Car developing institute in Prague and even worked for two years in Switzerland (1967-8) for Oerlikon, where he designed things such as a differential for the Peugeot 504 and other things. In the early 80's he was asked by the government to lead Skoda's development of a modern new hatchback and he, in his late 40's (being born in 1934) accepted this as his lifetime opportunity. He put together a great team of people and it was a miracle that the Favorit was born. He as a technical director of Skoda posed the power comparable of a director general in any western company. As Bertone said it "You must be a very powerful man, you come here, say how it should be like and it's as you say. When people from Germany come, they argue and never make a firm decision" :D This September he celebrated his 90th birthday and a meeting of some Favorit members in Skoda Museum took place and I was there with my family 1988 Favorit 136 in which I grew up and it was great to hear the tales of how the development was going from him personally. The engine would indeed live the whole Felicia life, also was upgraded to 1.4L in the Fabia and even was in the Octavia. The Octavia was an odd one of just over 700 examples made and it has a very interesting backstory to it. VW in the early 2000s wanted to try the fly by wire throttle and Skoda was given the task to develop it. So they decided on a special 1.4MPi Octavia, because they thought that not many people would buy it, so in case if it was a failure, there wouldn't be many cars to recall from the owners. So in the end it worked and this very old engine got a technical milestone credit to it to be the first VW engine that had fly by wire throttle. BTW there also was a 1.0 MPi version of this engine that was used in the basic Fabia called Junior (didn't even have power steering or passenger cubby cover) and this engine also was used in the VW Lupo/Seat Arosa so it indeed did find it's place in a VW products.

Didn't Ken Barlow from 'Coronation Street' drive a Favorit at some point? I'm sure I remember seeing it and thinking it was the perfect car for Ken!

4:12 Hmm think the heated rear window element pattern is borne of practicality not aesthetics. They wanted the area where the wiper parks to be heated so that the blade gets heated and unstuck from the glass. The sides have to join to clear the middle, so you get the v-shape aesthetics you mention, as having the element finish in the middle of the window would have meant extra wiring with exposed fragile connectors half way up.. You can really see the Bertone design cues though, given that they'd just done the Citroen BX. It's kinda a cross between the BX and the Visa.

The Favorit is a really great piece of industrial design, a bit like the early Austin Maestro.

I thought that one is a lost facelift? The pre facelift didn’t have the central Skoda badge at the front? It looks to me to be a post facelift like the one I sat in back in the day?

Use to really like the favourit. What would be a good road test. Would be the favorit and a mk1 Ibiza seeing they would be the last cars as independent before being taken over before VAG group

I must say, that interior is actually nicer than a mid-range noughties Fabia which is pretty much all monotone plastic.

This was not the only body style. Well maybe for the UK it was. While they did not make the Sedan ( it was and still is much more appreciated in other parts of the world than it is in the UK and western europe, so pity ), they did make an Estate version, a light Pickup and two vans. MTX also made a convertible. All of this applies to the Felicia as well.

I bought a 1996 Felatio LX in 1999. It was really just a Favorit with some extra plastic moulding inside and a slightly different body. More of a hard face lift than a new car. Nice enough, but a bit lacking in character. It wallowed on the motorway and just didn't do it for me. My previous car was a Fiat 126 FSM and I chopped it in for a 2CV Charleston after a couple of years.
