Man, people REALLY have this obsessive need to feel insulted, marginalized or outraged, don't they? If everything is racist, nothing is racist.

Going back to the 2000's to watch anime is an awesomely surreal experience to watch shows that were not yet available to stream. It's like having heaps of "new seasons" of anime you don't have to wait for.

I really like this movie, and it is even more relevant today than ever with the vicarious almost real time war reporting today. The wars in our world are real but everyone has front row seats to spectate like it's a game or play with the drone views and bodycams.

The Sky Crawlers did nothing wrong.

Good review, Joe. I saw it years ago and was bored by it but I could see the "Miyazaki response" angle that you mentioned. Of course, Oshii has his own takes on warfare (Patlabor 2 makes that argument better IMHO) and yes, The Sky Crawlers tries to put that on a more dystopic perspective of war as instrument of socio-economic process and cultural spectacle. What comes out of the movie in the end is an overall feeling of detachment. The 3D dogfights are cool tho. But for me, nothing beats Patlabor 1: the Movie. That movie is the real GOAT Perhaps I should

yeah I think Patlabor 2 is a bit more focused on that angle

I got to the halfway point of the movie on KZbin, then stopped. If I wanted to watch a "War is Futile" movie, I'd watch "Aces High" (1976), where a brand new British Royal Flying Corps pilot tries to survive longer than 2 weeks at the front. That movie was far more interesting, had better characters, and ended suddenly.

Very nice video! I have recently watched Sky Crawlers, and I like it so much. I think it offers such a good and critical commentary on war.

I had similar thoughts to this film. Same as you, i saw it in my younger years and found myself either bored or lost for the majority of the film. However, now that im older and wiser, i recognized an interesting motif when watching the movie. Simply put, whenever we were on the ground, life seemed dry.. dry enough to make the Popeyes biscuit challenge look like an oasis by comparison. The dialogue was "tiring?" (Not quite the word im looking for, but it's the best i got atm.) I often found myself either losing interest or just plain nodding off. But understanding that made this concept much more fitting, as when we were flying, the world came alive. Vibrant and beautiful, shining and radiant.. It's as if the show was reflecting the mentality of the pilots on the ground. The action was gorgeous, and the designs of the planes were just as aesthetic. Now more leaning towards the story, i felt a bit lost at times. I understand the premise of the story, but parts of it just felt like a lot was missing. Our hero Kaname Yuji was definitely a very *gray* character.. not righteous nor evil, just... there... almost as if he was transparent most of the time. However, i will give the story credit for the love story angle. It wasn't dramatic yet not boring. It was just as melancholic as the rest of the story, which honestly fit really well imo. Kusanagi played her role really well.

Yeah I didn't know how to describe it lmao, not in a pejorative sense, but like, the world in it is peaceful and wants blood

@@selectandpause3249 Which sounds like "Rollerball" (1975), to be honest.

Also, you haven't mentioned anything on the topic of racism. It's a bit hard with this movie, but... I don't know, it's in the thumbnail. Regarding racism, You seem to have pause(d). And Not so much select... This is a joke, of course.
