What's little publiczed these days is how several orders of magnitude the byzantine slev trade was bigger compared to its Arabian counterpart. Even the emperor had a eunuch play...boy to sleep with him every night. One thing the archologists remarked on the period was how rare it is to find shackles in lands ruled by Islam at that time, while the museums alone had curated over 500,000 of these from byzantium (which means there must have been dozens of millions originally as they are over a thousand years old!). There were eunuchs in there too, however that process was aeen as abominable by Muslims so the coptic church and other churches were reponsible for castrating the slaves, as they had been before Islam.

The enslavement of one single person is terrible, and we should rightly condemn the trans-Atlantic and trans-Saharan slave trades for the evil that they were. We are all equal, regardless of ethnicity, colour, religion... and maybe the numbers of European slaves taken and abused in this way was significantly less than other, better known examples - but does that make it any less monstrous?

The Only reason you guys call it "slavery" and not "war prisoners" is because it happened in national waters instead of national land. AND REFUSE to pay, you will be seen as a hostile state. 4-The consequence of being a hostile state to the biggest Empire (and the only one) at the time, is that your people won't get diplomatic/political protection from Pirates and Thieves. 5-The conclusion is that the enslavement was a result of the brazen war ships commanders and state leaders encroaching on enemy territorial waters and provoking a bigger stronger Empire. Another slavery that has been forgotten is Asian slavery, particularly in Korea, where slavery wasn't stopped until the Japanese closed it down in 1933. Then, during the second world war the Japanese enslaved Koreans again as comfort women, laborers, and as soldiers. Many Koreans today deny that it was a system of slavery, but it's depicted as slavery in many of Korea's own TV dramas and movies. Even after it was halted, those who had been slave owners and were rich continued to consider themselves above those who had been slaves and many of those eventually became Chabols, the incredibly rich captains of industry in Korea who own the companies that employ most persons. Many very rich Chabols even today treat others as if they were lower class and undeserving of the privileges they themselves enjoy. Of course, to have been a slave is shameful, so many Koreans today will deny such a system existed, but it did. My own wife's parents had been slaves as small children and after slavery was prohibited technically but the rich still treated the poor very wretchedly, making them work long hours for little pay, they lived in abject poverty. Slavery in Korea is something you should investigate. You'll be surprised by what you'll find.

Another aspect of slavery's history that is rarely discussed is the slavery of Europeans by Arab slavers. Two books are very interesting. Giles Milton's "White Gold: The Extraordinary Story of Thomas Pellow and Islam's One Million White Slaves" tells the story of a boy serving on a British ship that was attacked by Arabs on the high seas. He and several of his fellow crew members were enslaved and sent to Morocco. Another book worth reading is Robert C. Davis' "Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters: White Slavery in the Mediterranean, the Barbary Coast, and Italy, 1500-1800." Arab slavers roamed the seas attacking European ships, capturing crews as well as other passengers. They also attacked many coastal communities in Spain, France, and Italy. The captured people were usually sold in North Africa.

The transatlantic slave trade is not even close to being the only example of slavery taught in the West, but the transatlantic slave trade is emphasized because it actually happened in the US and impacts the politics and society of the West. Knowing about the Arab slave trade is important when studying a specific era in history, but knowing about the transatlantic slave trade for a westerner is an absolute necessity to participate in society. It's not a political reason in that one is being hidden and the other is being overplayed to fit a narrative. Most of them didn't even know blacks were slavers too or that white Europeans got enslaved, let alone the Islamic standard practice of slavery and how they do that to this day. The US education system alone is aggressively incompetent on this topic and ANY OTHER TOPIC that out-right refutes the standing politics of today; to the point where "you got an American education didn't you?" is now synonym for hard-left, communist, anti male, anti Western SJW biases. Interesting to think about how Muslim slavers traded in human lives - particularly African lives - for far longer, and at a much greater number than their European counterparts. And, of course, while chattel slavery was insidious because of how it ensnared *generations* of people into bondage, basically breeding their own commodities, the Trans-Saharan trade did the opposite for no less as brutal a reason: to castrate men and essentially breed the African out of the slave by forcing Arab genes into African concubines. Compare the tens of millions of people in the Americas that can trace their lineage to slavery, to the same concept in the Middle East that is otherwise nonexistent, because slaves were brought directly from Africa, and with the males castrated, the only children born of slave women were those of mixed blood, products of rape by Arab masters. The fact that there isn’t the same Black subculture with its roots tied to slavery is how Muslim Arabs have gotten away with covering up this slave practice for so long.

@@muhammadaqdas3724 Sure and not every European was Christian, but if you're looking at slavery or cruelty within Europe during that particular timeframe, you can bet it was done by a Christian, or excused by "bringing Christ" to whomever was being assaulted or enslaved. And we can say "No true Muslim would enslave or castrate another" but there's no real historical truth to that, when we examine the life of Muhammad himself. After the Prophet and his army subdued a tribe of Jews in battle - this tribe was called the Banu Qarayza - Muhammad had a lieutenant of his carry out punishment. In accordance with ancient Jewish law, Muhammad allowed his men to KILL (beheading specifically) every man above age 12, and all the young ones, along with the elderly, women and children, were sold as slaves. What righteous man does such a thing? You could argue he was simply following a code of conduct of "the people of the book", but if Muhammad was trying to be BETTER than the Jews, why carry out their degree of cruelty?

@@muhammadaqdas3724 but how does the religion define mistreatment? Why is slavery even allowed considering that there is no way to not mistreat a "slave" (slavery is inherently disrespectful)? Plus, empires don't always follow what their religion's tell them, especially if they see war and conquest as a religious duty (a common narrative is Islamic empires).
@abdullahmertozdemir943710 ай бұрын
@@rom1783-c1y a religion, just like any other binding force among people, will be abused for immoral or ulterior motives no matter what. What matters here is if that binding force is immoral in itself. As for how Islam in particular as a religion defines mistreatment, there are (naturally) disputes. It is unanimously agreed that if the owner slaps their slave, they have to free them. This on the surface may make people think more favorably of Islamic slavery, however considering there are still disputes surrounding if raping a slave is haram, what I said earlier seems to pale in comparison in moral/immoral scale. For example, when a slave owner cut his slave's penis, prophet still ordered the man to free his slave with no extra punishment compared to if he simply slapped him; likewise when a man deliberately killed his slave prophet still ordered him to free another slave. Whether this is moral or immoral is not in the scope of my comment. In Islam anyone under sharia has 4 foundational rights: right to live, right to mind (education, level of this education varies), right to (continuing) generation, right to justice. There are others but these are the foundations. If one of these is violated indefinitely, violator is an oppressor and prophet is said to stand for the oppressed against the oppressor on the judgement day. However there may be some contradictions, or what some would call exceptions to these rights. For example the owner of a female slave can prevent the slave from having children, because the birthed children will be their slaves and they will have to take care of them as well as their slave won't be able to serve them just as effectively for the time being.

One thing the archologists remarked on the period was how rare it is to find shackles in lands ruled by Islam at that time, while the museums alone had curated over 500,000 of these from byzantium (which means there must have been dozens of millions originally as they are over a thousand years old!). Till today, women are officially k*lled by Islamic Governments for not covering their hair properly (Mahsa Amini). You should thank the Protestants who forced the draconian CAtholic church into reformation, otherwise Catholicisim would've kept Europe in the dark ages. There's a reason why England a Protestant Majority Country (Constitutionally secular) and France, a Laicite Atheistic country were the most successful colonizers and still are world powers. Look at what Happened to the Iberians. Their only successful colonizing attempts were against some tribes with 0 immunity and technology.
