1. self improvement. I had a tumor. After surgery, I could not read, print, write, type. The doctor said to do crossword puzzles. No. I learned another language and embarked on a campaign to read a book by every Nobel Literature Prize awardee. I had to do flash cards. 2. right places - showing up. I religiously take a salon Argietine tango class every single week, not skipping one. I have no danced all over the world. 3. Open mind - every day, I remind myself to question my assumptions and my indoctrination. Nearly everything I was taught in college in the 1960s has been superseded, retracted or revised.

Even in ICU, I was there alone for 21 days, due to the COVID madness. I forced myself to continue learning German as I moved there when I was sixty. Currently 2 years 4 months cancer free, every day is a gift! I got my first degree at 40, doing a part time degree with a full time job and renovating a hovel as that was all the money I had. I now have a 4 bathroom house! Remember, if you didn't do well in school, keep learning and you are the only thing stopping you from achieving your goals..

I wanted a particular sports car that is very expensive. Some years later when I had enough money to buy it, I felt that it was not at all what I wanted. Fortunately, I realized the appeal and glitter of an expensive car would grow old, probably within weeks. What I really wanted was to help support someone with a clear career goal to achieve more in this world, but did not have the opportunities in life that I was blessed with. The right decision was made for me as if destined at the proper time and the reward will last a lifetime.

Decades ago the ruling class promoted college as the only way to be a winner and owning a house was the best investment. In this way they secured a working class that would be in debt to them. The fact that the rest of the world does not require general college before medical school, helps to affirm this.

The rest of the world (including where I live) has a separate "all inclusive" medicine track of 6 years. Not the 4 years undergraduate and 4 years medical school the US has. No Liberal arts classes, no English composition, no physical education, no political science. Just relevant material relevant to the profession. What a concept.

I often use this strategy to reflect on how lucky I am. Many "doors" could have led to much worse outcomes and some seemed to be just seconds off. Self improvement is monumental - it has no doubt vastly expanded my life - now 95% of it is just the way I like it. I'm very fortunate.

My mother was an educator for 36 yrs...when I went to nursing school I thought it was a waste of time for me to take certain classes that had absolutely nothing to do with nursing. My mother's reply was..it's all about the money what they can charge you for not what you need for your career... doors open and close as needed in your life sometimes you ignore them bc it's not what you want at that time...I truly believe you make your way as you are able but you also have to make the sacrifices needed to take each step...and as long as you're happy then that's what counts.

He always knows best, but I need to trust Him and be willing to let Him lead me, even if I do not understand His plan. Becoming upset and doubting Him, and even becoming angry and rebellious only got me into trouble -- it was a kind of self-torment. He really does know best, and it helps a lot that He has proved it to me. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6, New American Standard Bible, 1995 edition) "2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. 5 But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, 8 being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. (James 1:2-8, NASB, 1995 ed.) I think it's a bit easier to understand in the Classic edition of the Amplified Bible: "3 Be assured and understand that the trial and proving of your faith bring out endurance and steadfastness and patience. 4 But let endurance and steadfastness and patience have full play and do a thorough work, so that you may be [people] perfectly and fully developed [with no defects], lacking in nothing. 5 If any of you is deficient in wisdom, let him ask of the giving God [Who gives] to everyone liberally and ungrudgingly, without reproaching or faultfinding, and it will be given him. 6 Only it must be in faith that he asks with no wavering (no hesitating, no doubting). For the one who wavers (hesitates, doubts) is like the billowing surge out at sea that is blown hither and thither and tossed by the wind. 7 For truly, let not such a person imagine that he will receive anything [he asks for] from the Lord, 8 [For being as he is] a man of two minds (hesitating, dubious, irresolute), [he is] unstable and unreliable and uncertain about everything [he thinks, feels, decides]."

Marriage is a good example of this. I married a person from the same state in the US where I lived. However, if I had lived, or gone to school in a different state or country, I probably would have met and married a different person and been just as happy as I now am. I think we are all capable of loving many different people, but once we choose someone, it's our commitment to them that keeps us together. Therefore, some sliding doors must remain closed.

Whilst I'm glad that the 'Sliding Doors of Life' has worked for you (and, I'm sure, other commenters), it hasn't for me. My life has been one door after another slamming in my face (I even joke that my nose must resemble a Pug because of the constant doors hitting it!). Everything I've tried has failed - and I mean EVERYTHING. Some people must just be put on this earth to be examples of 'how to fail at everything' and I guess I'm right at the top of that list - but it's not for the want of trying. Hey ho.....

The reason students in the US not only are required but should go to university or college before medical school is because most high schools in the US are terrible and students don't want to study or develop the traits of character necessary for learning. I teach at the University level in the US and my students from Eastern Europe, Northern Europe, China, India/Pakistan and even some countries in South America can't believe how easy their classes at the college level are.

I would respectfully point out that there are simply not enough top/well paid jobs available, thus it doesn't matter how hard some people work, how much they train and re-train - if born poor the fact is 99% of them die poor. There are many thousands of graduates sweeping streets/unemployed. 500 or more applicants for each vacancy. The health service maybe has more opportunities and less barriers than generally. It is often not a case of what you know, but who you know and it helps to be born into a wealthy family to overcome the barriers. On this Dr Dhand, we must beg to differ, you present a much more positive story than reality allows.

1. In general, it's true that the US requires people to have a bachelor's degree before being eligible to apply for med school. But that's changing. There are some US med schools which accept people straight from high school. Not many, but there are some. I only hope there will be more in the future. 2. Much of the rest of the world's med ed is changing too. Many nations including the UK and Ireland are changing to become more like the US med school educational system such that their applicants must have a bachelor's degree before being eligible to apply to med school. For example, just look at all the med schools in places like the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand that are moving away from "undergraduate" med school to "postgraduate" med school systems where "postgraduate" med schools require a prior undergraduate degree in order to apply.
