There are some rivers in Taiwan that have enriched many upstream and downstream small towns because of the convenient transportation facilitated by their wide river basins.
For three hundred years, Xinzhuang #新莊, Bangka (Wanhua) #萬華 and Dadaocheng #大稻埕 in northern Taiwan all, in turn, flourished because of Tamsui River. Takoham (Daxi) is the commercial distribution center of the uppermost reaches of Dahan River, one of the tributaries of Tamsui River. At the time, if a boat from Takoham traveled downstream, the next stop would be Sanjiayong (Sanxia).
Dahan River’s water levels have dropped so low that boats have been unable to travel on it for nearly a hundred years. Blue dye, camphor, and timber, the main industries back in the day, gradually declined, while Daxi and Sanxia, both of which once flourished because of river transport, can now only rely on tourism brought by their exquisite old street architecture. Fortunately, determined locals and outsiders have worked hard to slowly develop new stories for these two small towns, helping Daxi and Sanxia to create other legends beyond just dried tofu and croissants.
