@@starspangledhiker Lance has, in an 8 year career in F1, been outperformed by EVERY team mate. Sergei Sirotkin? Does anyone remember him? His first teammate at williams? Out performed him by miles, yet he's not in F1 any more because spoiled little rich kid and the threat of daddy stroll withdrawing funding if they didn't keep him. In F3 he only won a championship because of team orders to appease daddy stroll so they could keep their funding. If any other driver, over an 8 year career had the same lack of results Lance has, they'd have been kicked out of F1 LONG ago. The ONLY reason Lance is in F1 is because of Daddy buying him his own team. His podium finishes and poles have come entirely from luck not skill. He is an awful driver.

To be *slightly* fair to Al Pease, though: he was driving a car three years out of date, that (if F1Rejects are to be believed) had literally been dragged out of a museum to take part in the race. Didn't justify him interfering with cars dozens of laps ahead of him, but the lack of pace wasn't all down to him.

Not really outstanding considering roughly cars 7 cars finished that race. Such was the attrition rate, that Lamy in the Minardi finished 6th. With that said, Morbidelli did comfortably beat Blundell's McLaren.

Honestly, can't fault him for using his negotiating skills and money to chase the dream. But for all the negotiating prowess, he managed to land with some of the worst teams in F1 History at their lowest points. For as bad as he was driving, that 1995 season was just cursed. And at least he freely acknowledges he wasn't very good, and has a sense of humor about it. Still, he was never wasting a seat in a good car, and he never had to have his dad buy the team to retain his seat.

For the record, 19 million in 1995 translates to 39-40 million today (usd, so if it was pounds, probably a good deal more) Note that in 2023, LEWIS HAMILTON had a $35 million base salary. You could pay for lewis hamilton plus another driver with the cash this guy paid to race for a single season. What a legend.

This highlights society in general. Money makes things happen. Personality gets you money. Skill gets you a little money, but mostly affects how fast you loose it. It is totally possible for a charming person to become a billionaire while being utterly incompetent (Though this may involve prison visits and/or bankruptcy at some point). But a skilful person with no personality will never get far.

Didn't make much impact in F1 but I think he could have been a fairly good sports car racer had he continued. Decent guy, honest with himself, had some moments in sports cars later on that looked promising. He switched to becoming a Japanese driver manager, which I think is hard for anyone to argue he definitely has a genuine talent for.

Im a 61 year old midwesterner who grew up watching upper to lower middle class level (factories used to pay good money before being relocated to China and Mexico) entries….hundreds and hundreds of them….race one another and the best ones…the ones who EARNED IT THROUGH DRIVING,mechanical ability moved up….in my case we are talking Alan Kulwicki…race one another. In real stock cars too. Now nasacar,f1,indy league and their feeder series are 98% rich peoples kids. The beauty of it is SOMEONE HAS TO WIN. Its still just a joke, especially for the prices asked for a seat. 10 years to go until the drivers wont be in their rides racing….they will sit side by side and drive them on autopilot. i cant wait if im still alive
