With some slight eq tweaks these are a great budget option. You are correct about the bass, but they do better than most at their budget - they only go down to about 70hz. I would say at the $500 mark you could go to genelec 8010a which are small and sound great. You should review more genelec speakers.
@Lon1001 Жыл бұрын
I have had these for a month now, agreed that with a flat EQ they are ok but very minimal tweaks makes them sound so great. As for the low end, the curve drops off a step at 75hz then drops off fast below 60hz however if you push the eq you can hear them putting out a hint of sub-bass down to about 25hz (they want to but just can't since there is nothing there to hit), also the dsp really reaches to output anything that low so I just put a high-pass filter around 25hz to save them the effort.

Worth mentioning that I have my R1600 hooked up Aune X1S. I know someone who does have the entire R-line and he thinks that with my amp they R1600 sound as good as the R1850. I have bought and returned the Airpulse A100 because I was disappointed that they only sounded 15% better (smoother, and silkier) than the R1600. In fact without the A1S amp the A100's sound kinda the same as the R1600 with the amp. I have noticed that the difference in sound is almost non-existing when listened in a bedroom, at normal volume levels... Things might change if the comparison test took place in a smaller living room and higher volumes. ... Curious what Z's thought's are on this one ...

This is such a great/hilarious review and damn glad I found it! I was this close 👌🏼to pulling the trigger on a pair of Presonus Eris e4.5s based on sound comparison alone, but after some digging I found out many Presonus models have a humming/noise problem, including the e4.5s and that was a dealbreaker for me. I can't find any dirt on these whatsoever, like NADA. Nothing but stellar comments and reviews across the board, and they're a fraction of the price! Thanks again, this was super helpful.

Edifier does have some magic with their DSP and stuff. I own their Noise Cancelling in ear headphones called the Neobuds Pro. You should try it out, it is amazing, it has parametric eq and a preset tuning called Dynamic mode, which sounds amazing with most tracks. Actually just today, as I am searching for some good speakers I realized I want a speaker with the same sound signature like the Neobuds Pro. This MR4 seems to have the same "edifier magic". I can also have for the same price a used Elac Debut 4. (would need some good cheap amp for that). Hard decision, I cannot try the Elac before buying it though. I guess I can still send back the Edifier if I don't like it.....I can also get a Elac Debut 6 for good price or a new Elac Debut 5.2 for a bit more new..... Hard decisions.

Testing right now MR4s + PreSonus Eris Sub8. I'm in heaven. Plus, I feel like the smartest audiophile/music lover/amateur musician ever :) Got the sub as used item in Amazon. It didn't work at first. Turned out the guy how returned it doesn't know what a fuse is!. And I don't blame him, I was confused also the first time one of my old Tascam monitors stopped working. Thanks much Z for helping me to decide to give the MR4s a shot before spending a lot more money. They'r awesome and the sub just gives them that low end which was the only thing I was missing. My settings right now are perfectly obvious and they work amazingly well. Sound card to sub in, sub out to the Edifier input (via RCA, turns out my Behringer UMC doesn't give enough power with balanced cables...doesn't matter much, no weird noises at all). Sub gain is like at 25%,, highpass filter is on, lowpass is set to 60 Hz -the lowest the MR4s go according to specs. Bass on the MR4s is low in volume but so tight, I don't think I want to take it away!.

I love my Edifier R1850db 's -- which have a remote, a subwoofer output, and a much nicer speaker cable with what appear to be DIN connectors. They could be a *little* more audiophile quality, and as such this R4 model seems really interesting, but with all of that functionality missing. So my question is, do you think the R4 is enough of a sonic upgrade to justify the loss in flexibility?

As already mentioned 3.5mm to RCA works for connecting these speakers to a computer. To step things up put a DAC in between the computer and the speakers. A USB dongle DAC like the Fiio x Jade Audio KA1 is a cheap solution, USB C (with adapter to A) in, 3.5mm out. It retails for $50, I was able to get it on sale for $32. Regarding connecting to a sub, find one that has low level in and out RCA connectors. Connect your analog source to the sub RCA inputs, connect the RCA outputs from the sub to the speakers.
