The Smiler front seat on-ride HD POV Alton Towers

This custom Gerstlauer Infinity coaster holds the world record for most inversions as it flips passengers upside down 14 times throughout the ride. Unfortunately the coaster has been plagued with problems since it opened in 2013, including a serious accident when two cars collided into each other on 2. June, 2015 injuring four riders.
Previously the coaster was closed for four days in July 2013 after a piece fell off the track and 48 people had to be rescued, then in November 2013 it closed for five days after guide wheels fell off and hit four people in the front car.

I looking at all the comments and the crash wasn’t a design fault as the computer system did pick up that the block was occupied it was the operators that ignored the warning and sent the second carriage anyway,, it was a human error

Why did the control system allow the train to enter an occupied block? Design FAIL! The wheels falling off in Nov 2013 came from the chain mechanism not a train.

FuzzyTronics We didn't say that the wheels fell off the train and we know they detached from the chain guide as the train ascended the vertical hill, but we've updated the description from just "wheels" to "guide wheels" to sort out any confusion. The accident also wasn't necessarily a design fail. If the control system was reset while the second train was held on the lift (which is reported to have been about 10-15 minutes) and the first train had already valleyed (not moving), the control system would not know about the occupied block. A visual check is necessary at that point because the sensors can't pick up the stationary train.

As for the control system even after a reset it should know how many trains where on track before the reset and nothing should be allowed to move until it is told all the trains positions.

***** If the operators can reset the control system while trains are half-way around, there should be an idiot proof fail safe. For example, it can only be reset if every checkpoint is occupied by a train and the brakes are all activated. If not, there should be a like a button near each checkpoint where the operator has to physically go out to press to confirm the track is clear. I agree with Fuzzy in that nothing should move at all until the computer knows the positions of all the trains after being reset.

coasterforce i think you should remove the part about the crash in the description. it seems quite misleading to what actually happened when it crashed such as "the coaster has been plagued with problems" it makes it sound as if it was the coasters fault when it obvously wasnt. not to mention this did happen about 2 years ago and we need to move on from it. i hope you take the time to read this comment and look into it.
