I became a Vegetarian straight after hearing this. Morrissey did a brilliant job in getting his point across!

Morrissey has been a strict vegetarian since his teens and has not been shy about stridently expressing his beliefs concerning animal rights. The title track of The Smiths' second album, this song finds him imploring their fans to abstain from meat. Morrissey wrote in his autobiography: "The aspirant moment is the title track. Each musical notation an image, the subject dropped into the pop arena for the first time, and I relish to the point of tears this chance to give voice to the millions of beings that are butchered every single day."

Vegetarian isn’t much better than eating meat. You’re still buying into the dairy/egg industry which is basically the same considering they get sent off for meat when they’re done providing fluids and it’s just as vile

Always somewhat preferred the live version of this (released on the b-side of the That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore single). More visceral. More stripped-down. Nastier. Stunning guitars.

I went vegetarian in 1983 and then vegan in 1990. This song helped me to affirm my beliefs. Morrissey is indeed at least vegetarian and I believe he is actually vegan. You did a great job at reviewing this song Justin. It's an excellent song with a powerful message. I've read many people went vegetarian after this song came out. The music is great and the lyrics are great. For anyone reading this, if you are against animal cruelty then you should go vegan.

A sensitive and chilling closing piece that almost makes you want to stop eating meat! (although I've never been much of a meat eater). Sometimes when Morrissey sings it's almost murder on the ears!😜 (I'm thinking in particular of "I Want The One I Can't Have", where his voice sounds almost off-key). But enough nastiness, Meat is Murder is an excellent album from start to finish! (my favourite album by The Smiths).

"Mielie bread" was an occasional treat, growing up here (probably similar or exactly the same as your corn bread). People don't seem to eat it as much anymore, though. "Mielie meal" porridge (same as corn grits, I think) is still a staple. There's a spare 10 kg bag of Spar Super Maize Meal against the wall behind me, and more of it in the plastic bucket in the kitchen cupboard. (There's probably some still as porridge in a pot on the stove from this morning, if it's not oats today). "Green mielies" are still a thing in season. The common element between all these is butter ... which goes along with the kind of murder being sung of here. (No milk without a calf. And a dairy calf that doesn't become a cow becomes veal.) I can sympathise with the sentiments expressed - only if I was going to become consistent and go radical on this, I'd call it cannibalism, rather than murder. Because the mammals are our brothers and sisters. Our neighbour across the road doesn't eat anything that has eyes, and for that I consider her to be better person than me. I think Morrisey is/was vegan? The "a-word" you were looking for (or does it just lead to being blocked?) is Abattoir. Something you might not know about these places is that in the sheep section they have what's called a "Judas Goat". (I think you can guess the rest.) I'm an admirer of Temple Grandin, an animal rights activist who took a pragmatic approach, and focused on things like designing animal handling facilities that cause less stress. For instance, if you make cows in a crush pen follow a curved instead of linear path, they can see a bit of outside world to one side, and another cow to follow on the other, and tend to calmly follow the other cow. As far as the song goes, I think the ending is the sound of meat saws, not animals. We do some pretty brutal things to animals. From a relativistic view of that, it's probably better to eat venison than domestic livestock, if you're going to eat meat. In many places it's just not possible to have predators with your game, so to sustain the carrying capacity of the land humans need to step in as "predators" (unless you do things like the contraceptives they tried on elephant round here for a few years - which is just not affordable for small game). (Elephant don't have many predators. There are places where lions will kill young elephant, but they generally get to be "self-limiting". I think that's why they stopped the contraception - which was to protect trees - some of which are nesting sites for species of vulture that have become rare for various reasons. Meaning that these things get complicated. Let the elephants "shape the vegetation naturally" - and control their population by periods of starvation when migration routes are blocked or drought is too widespread - and something else gets hammered.) I seem to have drifted off topic. How unusual.
@scunner68283 ай бұрын
Yes I know that Temple Grandin took her experience as a person with an often intensely autistic experience of the world dealing with anxiety-making environments, to help create contraptions and other ways of structuring the world we rub up against , and so alleviate stress, for other species too!

I'm no longer vegan, but I still think this is a superbly executed song. For some reason, quite a few people don't rate it. I like Morrissey when he's humourless and dour. I think he could have got away with being less humourous and more ponderous more often. By the way, not meaning to be contrary, if any vegetarians are suffering from sleeplessness, anxiety and depression, I would suggest reconsidering eating healthy, lean meat and fish. I was vegan for years and suffered, but now I've resumed meat and fish, my afflictions are almost negligible. I also have more energy and a lust for life that I remember having in my teens and twenties. EDIT: Of course, in 1984, admitting to being vegetarian was almost as controversial as coming out as gay!

Veganism is an ethical stance not a diet. There is no medical or health reason to eat animals or their secretions. I am 60. Vegan for 30 years and married to a vegan heart surgeon. However one can live on oreos and chips and still be a vegan. Veganism is against the enslavement, exploitation, abuse and needless slaughter of sentient beings for a fleeting moment of selfish sensory pleasure.

I don't think it's great lyricism when you are trying to accuse everyone who enjoys eating meat and describe them as immoral instead of focusing on the unnecessary suffering of animals. That doesn't sound like artistry to me. It's a great song though.
