Up next “Well I Wonder” is not only my favorite Smiths song but is THE song I want played at my funeral. Gorgeous, gorgeous music that brings me to my knees every time I hear it. Much like Alseep, I Know It’s Over and Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me it HAS that raw visceral timeless power

Pain pleasure, and satisfaction never last. We deceive ourselves, living in the past. Meanwhile, living lives that go "Nowhere Fast". Peace & Love.

Great short little tune, Andy Roukes Bass playing his phenomenal on the next 3 songs. The line “and if the day came, when I felt a natural emotion” could imply the protagonist is used to these fake emotions and if he ever felt a True emotion he probably couldn’t handle it anymore, “I’d get such a shock, I’d probably jump in the ocean”. Well I Wonder and Barbarism begins At Home are both incredibly played songs.

Sometimes (everytimes) to listen to the Smiths' sound is so healing... 😊

"And neither one particularly appeals to me." That moment when we all realize just how true this line is. Everyone struggles at so many moments in life. It's refreshing to hear the honesty that reflects where religion probably came from in the first place: the need to make life more meaningful than it is in real life. We are born, then we live, and then we die...

each household appliance is like a new science - so perfect, and Johnny Marr's 'sound effect' guitar work is pure genius - there are times when i remember just why this band was SO important to me...

Like "Rusholme Ruffians", "Nowhere Fast" is musically close to rockabilly, but I prefer "Nowhere Fast" because it's less linear and more melodic overall. A good track, but the next three are even better and are among my favourites from the album.

My favourite off the album...have always loved the beat and feel of this track. Transports me back to my teens, going to see them live in the mid 80s in my hometown.

This song reminds me so much of REM's train songs, Driver 8 and Auctioneer, and the Cure's Jumping Someone Else's Train... songs that mention trains with drums that sounds like a train. There's a song by Ride, Here & Now, that does the same thing. You gotta love it.

It's a gloomy day here and I am definitely in a Morrisey state of mind. That opening lyric is amazing and I LOVE this song. I absolutely think the music is meant to remind you of the train. He's going nowhere fast - and every day the train reminds us that other people have places to go and things to do - while he's just kind of on the hamster wheel of doom (good name for a song! or an alternate title for this one?). I would argue that the pain of feeling nothing is worse than depression. It's the state beyond depression that his is talking about. At least that's how I would read this. Apathy - the response, or one response, to being left behind economically Thanks for playing this one!!!

Love it. As the side 2 opener of Meat is Murder, it flows perfectly into the wonderfully melancholic "Well I Wonder". Weirdly perfect pair of tunes.

A catchy number. I guess the lyrics about natural emotion are to do with feeling alienation and detachment from other people, so he couldn't imagine having the kinds of emotions that would seem natural to others.

I think (especially these days) to feel a natural emotion would be that shocking it may be too much. Anger , love, guilt, etc might all be driven/influenced by media

I think walling off the true natural emotions might be necessary to not be a sobbing mess all day with all the turmoil that’s going on. Eventually it comes out and it’s pretty much a tsunami and uncontrollable. TMI.

Morrissey was/is bored with life's emotions. The Smith's lyrics have always expressed his apathy.

An oh so familiar croon 4 sure.. Wot do the Smiths Randy Newman The Blue Nile Thin Lizzy Queen Black Sabbath and Talk Talk have in common? Along with Kraftwerk Sparks Mike Oldfield 70sSupertramp and DLRoth-era Van Halen? Yep! They're all unique and they're all Just JP superstars. I prefer solo Morrissey to this though, and I prefer Spilt Milk by Jellyfish to the Beatles. Don't ask me why. Hold on to your friends, everybody. Marvellous!

@@pentagrammaton6793 Not a bad choice. It's my second favourite after Meat is Murder which I place at the top. On the other hand, I find the Smiths' debut album inconsistent and Strangeways, Here We Come never had any effect on me. Besides that, I like some non-album singles like "Panic", "London", "Shakespeare's Sister", "Asleep", "Oscillate Wildly", "You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby", "Rubber Ring", "Sweet and Tender Hooligan", "The Draize Train".

It's almost a contradiction, as sadness is a natural emotion, right? But I think the singer is feeling repressed and unexpressive in his daily life. Not feeling authentic. Disconnected. Maybe just too polite.
