R.I.P. Richard Davalos (1930-2016), the face on the album cover, the actor who co-starred with James Dean in East of Eden. It's very odd that Morrissey cropped and used Davalos' photos looking at James Dean as album covers instead of Dean's face. I think Morrissey manifested that he's Davalos and he's looking to his hero, James Dean. It's a pretty cool idea to be honest.

great post, thanks; I love the artwork on the albums, as I channel the aesthetic appreciation of a youthful male form from a homosexual's perspective..Morrissey was a sensibility, for sure, in those productive years; all artists seem influenced by the particular archetypes that speak to them personally and it's no surprise to find the tragic James Dean turning up on Morrissey's radar, the perfect template of death, beauty, lost promise, disappointment etc..

@@supergrahamg Sorry to bother, but I left a comment to you in another thread, and I saw this one again aswell, I'm curious, do you make art of your own? You said you channel the "aesthetic appreciation of a youthful male form from a homosexual's perspective", that's a pretty interesting way to put it, and quite sensible at that. Maybe I misread your comment, but if you meant by "I channel" that it inspires you in your work than I'd love to know more about it. I'm inspired by Morrissey aswell, without necessarily feeling like him in many ways too. Thanks for reading and sorry to bother if anything.

@@RenegadeShepard69 I am interested in cultural history, and I do not wish to heap disparagement on a popular musician who does not require my approbation; what I find interesting in these threads from much younger people is the extent to which, while they appreciate the lyricism and wit of the music, miss entirely the layered relevance of the Moor Murders in the 1984 debut album, Brian Masters brilliant book length journalistic analysis of them 'Beyond Belief' (which Morrissey must have read), the Shelagh Delaney film A Taste of Honey etc which informs it also And so they miss an interesting dimension to what, for me, elevates the music above the ephemera of pop, one of the reasons it endures. However, related to this, is a troubling fact ; I personally do think the wholesale engagement with this theme by Morrissey and Marrback in the 1980s was inappropriate and somewhat crass, given the fact the parents of the murdered children were still alive in the 1980s (and several remain alive to this day); not really appropriate subject matter for pop music, however well intentioned ; tuneful, memorable but somewhat glib, attributing psychological 'depth' and ambivalence to what were two amoral murderers. As for Morrissey, more generally, his Lake Poets' miserabilism was an authentic expression of a super-sensitive young man, however over, time, my recollection (and one shared by many) is that the rather grandiose 'holier than thou' , finger jabbing personal political posturing began to detract massively from the original achievement. Hence my comment about liberals with their phoney utopias and irritating universalisms, an analogy, and as you point out, not really directly applicable to him, whose political instincts appear confused and rather more strident. My guess is that the story is always and ever all about him, not an examination of the world (the list of the people he demonises is laughably lengthy) and he feels rather superior to those around him, a comfortable hiding place I have found for many a person who is rather emotionally constipated and frightened of intimacy. I still love the music. I have no ambition to read his biography. The whole point perhaps is not to let too much light in on the art. Or to grow and develop as a person and an artist. I think his failure to do either is a cause of regret for both him and for us. Long ago he became a cartoonish figure, humourless and transparent. On a lighter note, I would add that, for me, the heterosexual equivalent of the artwork in the Smiths' albums, is that of Roxy Music; Bryan Ferry, a true ladies' man, as every one of their memorable album covers will readily attest.....

I grew up in rural Colorado in a small farm town. The music of the day was classic rock and metal. At my HS if you didn't fit into one of the cliques often dictated by your musical and attire choices you were shunned and ridiculed. Typical rural America. I hated the box I was in, I wanted to dress differently and see a bigger world. I wanted music that actually said something, anything about my life and how I felt about it and my place in the world. New Wave came along in the late 70's and early 80's and I jumped on board with a passion. The style of music was diverse and the fashion those bands sported was all together different to say the least. I was a Sophomore in HS when The Smiths debut came out. Everything changed for me that year as far as my choice of music and what I would wear. Bands like The Smiths and The Cure and Depeche Mode and U2 gave me the courage to be different and follow my own ideas about what was really good to me. I have never looked back. This album in particular helped me through a dark time in my life. I had just started college and my Gran died. She and I were very close and the loss of her had me in a tailspin mentally and emotionally. This album was catharsis for me. D o D D and Last Night I Dreamt and I wont share you, still stand out as the tracks that really gave me the goosebumps. I will always love this album and what it stands for in my then soundtrack of my life. Moz is amazing, but for me, Marr is the magic. His melody driven guitar hooks are unique and I feel he is truly one of the best guitarists of all time.

This album changed my life. I used to have so many rules in my head and one of them was that I couldn’t listen to music on my own and I couldn’t pick the songs. When I was first trying to get over it, I clicked on this (I had to keep skipping and pausing because I still wasn’t used to it) but it was like nothing I’d ever heard before, my life flashed before my eyes ~ I’m now and obsessive smiths fan, and I can also listen to whatever music I want on my own without my brain playing up and making me feel so guilty like I was doing something wrong and I’m just generally so much better. Yeah and this album got me out of that 😊 thought I’d share this story to show how powerful music (and this album) is.

Talking to myself, whom I left behind on 1st January 1988 as I listened to Strangeways: Happy New Year but, You still haven't earned it yet, baby ... This album is a precious parting gift from The Smiths. It is the sound of four musicians playing at their best. Strangeways vies for No.1 Smiths album with The Queen is Dead. That news of The Smiths demise was visceral at the time. Back in the day, there wasn't this over saturation of music, yet. So the lights going out in the music hall of The Smiths was Big Time. “I'll see you somewhere, I'll see you sometime ...” Prescient, eh? I wonder if Morrissey was already planning the corker of an album he went on to create as his first solo record? Much Thanks due to Mr. Joyce, Mr. Rourke, Mr. Marr and last but certainly not least Mr. Morrissey. Thank You All for the music.

I was a college DJ when this disc came out and remember playing "Girlfriend in a Coma" on every shift. Love Strangeways and remember those years very well. I was lucky and got to see The Smiths at their first North American show at The Opera House in Boston and also at the Great Woods show on The Queen Is Dead Tour that showed up on the deluxe reissue, repackage. Great days.

An absolute masterpiece from the Beatles of 80s indie rock. The 80s were a magical time for music - possibly the greatest of all time, and The Smiths were at the forefront of it. This was their zenith. The star being its brightest before it burns out. We can only imagine what they could have accomplished had they stayed together , but we can only speculate now. Peace Out to my kids of the 80s, may the 80s never die.

@@camioso Saying "ever" and then "last 100" in incongruous, almost contradictory. Much of the good “alternative” music bands in the late 80s seemed to be ahead of their time. Sub pop records also launched in the the late 80s responsible for the grunge movement of the early 90s. Late 80s 9os arguably the best era for music.

Amy- You said it. I would say that The Smiths could not have a picked a worse time to break up. I think this album was their attempt to go a bit more mainstream.
