"I've seen this happen in other people's lives, now it's happening in mine...." That refrain could have gone on for a month and I would still have sung along til the fade.

I understand and agree with you. I think this song is beautiful and quite wonderful. I know it's a sin to suggest it, but this song just may be the apex of their playing

Another beautiful perfect Smiths track that is about real life and true meaning, not another love song that means nothing. Great lyrics accompanied by brilliant music that totally suits the lyrics and feel the song creates. It needs to be played loud especially for the guitar riff that refrains which is one of the ingredients that makes this song truly great, the chords and slide guitar looping round creates the mood & emotion of the track. To be able to write music of this style back in the 1980’s that was completely different to anything else musically of that time and at the age of 19/20yrs old which Johnny was when the song was written, was so mature songwriting for such a young man and ahead of his time, unlike 99% of musicians much older that would use 3 or 4 standard chords, which this wasn’t. Another masterpiece of many that Morrissey & Marr penned together in such a short period of time.

@@thedeadxtras9927 Agreed. They were a magical duo for sure. I don't believe age is a requirement for knowledge, per se, Marr is just a gifted individual that was enriched by Morrissey's presence (and vice versa). The song is indeed a very special gift to the soul

"It was dark as I drove the point home" is my kind of poetry. I've been with this song since the 'Meat Is Murder' album came out. This album was the one that sold me - fall of 1985 in Colorado. Saw them on the 'Queen Is Dead' tour of 1986 at CU in Boulder.

I have always loved this song , it's one of the Smiths best , and for me their most haunting piece of music ... which is saying something . Every band member is doing something extraordinary in it . It transports me to another place. It's a shame it made little impression on you , maybe you weren't in the right mood .

Everyone talks about Morrissey and Marr but Rourke and Joyce complete the magic. Rourke in particular does amazing bass parts

Thanks for the review mate. It’s certainly a hypnotic and meandering piece. I like this track too, but never felt a big connection to it. While a lot of fans love this song, as a die-hard Smiths fan, I feel like I should like it more…

My favourite Smiths song - they have bigger, more popular (albeit less dense ) songs, but this for me just brings out the best in ever member of the group. Its like an ocean of sound you can float in

"That Joke" is far better than "alright", it's a sublime masterwork. _Meat Is Murder_ tracks are best experienced within the context of the album. Otherwise, it's like listening to "Great Gig In The Sky" before "Breathe". And, yeah, Suede is a band to dive hard into. Greatest UK band of their generation. Some entry points: Beautiful Ones My Dark Star The Wild Ones (Unedited Version) Picnic By The Motorway Simon

Ibwluwve the intention of the repetition and length of it are ooint makers about the dull and inescapable mundane nature of depression kind of an artistic ploy to put u in the setting of the message of the song

The swaying the whole song perplexes me, but only because the first time I heard this song I was still. It froze me, especially the last 3/4 of the song. I can tell near the end youre ready for it to be over.. this is all ok though, just interesting to observe your observation. Good review
