I’m saddened at some of the comments spewing negativity and vitriol over a product that most likely was never heard. What motivates people to talk trash? I honestly don’t think that I could have done a better subjective review of this product. And if I put on my electrical engineering hat and did a review of the circuit topology instead, people would be bored and similarly speak unkindly about that analytical approach. Can’t we just be grateful someone took their time and effort to give a balanced, honest assessment of their subjective experience to our community, for free? It is better to live in a mindset of gratitude and peace. Division is what keeps humanity from reaching its potential.

Thomas has done an incredible job bringing this together. Focusing on high quality components, a clear design goal, built in Canada, and for a price point of 1500 usd, is nothing short of remarkable. It will not be all things for all people, and requires consideration on pairing (as it should be). It’s a passion project that cuts through the ‘vanilla’ the majority of the market offers. I am usually hyper critical of amplifiers, but this honestly seems fair. If I were to build this amp at cost, I would be looking at about 150 for the transformers, 100 bucks for the pcbs, 20 bucks for the connectors, and 150 bucks for the enclosure. Let's just round up and throw in another 100 bucks for packaging and what not. That's 600 bucks just in materials. That doesn't include assembly time, overhead, nothing.

Hey Jay - I really am enjoying the new format to your equipment review videos. You have always been very good at describing the sound characteristics and their good and bad qualities while also noting your own biases in the narrative. My own person audio journey growth has come from how you select the describe the pro/cons in the pairing segment. By NOW adding the equipment pairing with pricing groups, you are allowing for a bigger audience who are not as far along on their audio journey as perhaps you and I. One can now see a forward thinking manner how one can buying and selling their equipment also to get the ideal pairing….to get the best out the item being reviewed. With this much capacitance, Jay how is the base grip with this amp…. anything like Hegel? Jay can you address what is happening with the company Denafrips and why it is no longer being distributed by Vinshine. Is this change something your viewer should be concerned with? I know Vinshine had a very good reputation for customer service.

It would be really nice if Jay had an in house set of Maggies. There are an awful lot of us out here with Maggies who would like to know how the various electronics work with a demanding panel speaker. I'm worried that the lack of additional reserve power at 4 ohms could be an issue, although Thomas emailed me with assurances that the match is great.
@michaelsparrow47984 ай бұрын
@Jayiyagi: Based on a rudimentary understanding of power-supply/amplifier design, I don't think the entire 200,000ufd of capacitance is for "filtering". Some is, but some is also a reserve for supplying current when big demands are made on the output stages?
@Artcore1033 ай бұрын
it all does both, and that is always the case. if the power is going through capacitors, it by definition filters, and by definition holds available charge/current for instantaneous peak demands. the location of them (before the toroidal power supplies, or after) does make some difference of course in exactly how this all works, but they're still effectively always doing those two things. capacitance is also important if you're analyzing power output both in terms of continuous power output vs instantaneous peak output - and how long it can output a given power loud.
@Coolesttech4 ай бұрын
I'm glad it sounds great, and I know Thomas put alot of effort into his products but the branding (naming, logo etc) and industrial design need a lot of help. There's not even consensus among reviewers of how they say the name: Galee-On, Galee-Own, Galee-Un. Too much silkscreening and bad fonts. I would love to hear the SE tube amp though, but a tube amp won't work for my lifestyle unfortunately. To be fair there's a lot of companies, many which have been around for a while which also have similar branding issues. Rogue Audio comes to mind, excelled products, terrible branding, logo and fonts.

Get some 5" FR drivers and mount them open, on top of some speakers boxes (angled back a bit) and with a woofer in the box. Put just an inductor on the woofer (and a small resistor if woofer is too loud). Connect the open FR driver directly, and in parl with the woofer. Or use old 2-way or 3-way speakers, and disconnect the med and tweeter and just use the woofer with the open FR driver on top of the box. Mount the open driver on top with modling clay or lots of Blue Tack (and later engineer a permanent mount if you like it). Good luck with that!😅 Best medrange you ever heard! Electrical engineering tells us when it comes to amplifier power supplies. Going over what is actually needed for the circuit gains next to nothing. But, it sounds like this amplifier is designed like the components of old. If it has 75 watts per channel @ 8 ohms 20hz-20khz, then it will sound very powerful! Looks to be a very well built amplifier. I bet it can handle anything you throw at it. This is not the case for the majority of other amplifiers, especially new designs. Their power ratings are deceptive, and many boast huge power ratings. But, their power ratings are not calculated covering the entire 20hz-20khz bandwidth. Notice how some of the specifications provided by companies will state 200 watts @ 8 ohms, with no mention of the frequency bandwidth that is covered at the stated rating.
@mfr584 ай бұрын
Interesting power delivery spec given the size of psu. I wonder whether he's use an C-R-C PSU filter which would cause some voltage drop on higher current demand, but the massive storage capacity may account for driving music peaks so well. Someone explain to me why a two toroidal transformer configuration @ 200 VU per needs this many capacitors? It’s nice to have power on reserve. I don’t get why Thomas just didn’t start with a larger transformer. Or perhaps two larger transformers. I find it all a touch confusing when all the reviews I watch on the TS A75 are only paired with smaller speakers. It does review well.
@MichelLinschoten4 ай бұрын
Audiophiles act as if their speakers need tons of capacitance in reality. Everything you see here is just overkill
@user-od9iz9cv1w4 ай бұрын
I think you touch on an interesting question. Does a bigger transformer with few filter/reserve caps sound similar to a smaller transformer with more caps? Both have an impact. Having both is likely good. It would be informative to experiment.
@superspeeder3 ай бұрын
Transformers and caps will both reach a point of diminishing returns as they become oversized for the application. Oversized transformers don’t do much once they comfortably cover the continuous power of the amp. Capacitors bolster the dynamic power of the amp, allowing it to temporarily output more power than the transformers can supply; they store energy that can be quickly released and replenished to maintain the sharpness of transient hits as output levels increase. It also seems to be somewhat of a marketing move, since everyone likes the look of a big bank of caps. Still, I put more weight on capacitance than transformer capacity.

Hi Jay, thanks for the work you out into this! It really helps! Considering the drop in price of the Hegel H390 in the used market due to the recent introduction of the H400, would you say the A75 with an Eversolo A8 might be a better option when compared to a used H390 using its internal DAC and streamer? I would use this with CSS 1TDX speakers and I qualify "better" in terms of sound quality mainly. Thanks again in advance. Cheers!

Well Jay, I think this type or design of your presentation concerning the functionality of Thomas's amp is refreshing. 😂 My olny disparity is with the responder who insinuated the potential for negative interactions between the Triordial configuration and their being stacked "obviously" exemplifies its weakness and ignorance. To which I would say the Electrical Engineer Thomas works with is highly respected, highly qualified given the depth, breadth,and his Degrees not to mention his years of work knew full well the positive and potential negatives and thus their location would have virtually no decernable affect on any parameters one might hear that is unless their ears are as sensitive as a dogs. And as this arrangement con be found in numerous amplifiers across the spectrum. I do know some designers go as far as to encase there transformers in neutral polymers inside a non magnetic sleeve. That said they also are 30-50% more expensive and its questionable as to can your hear a specific difference based on that arrangement or dors the rest of their topology have a greater influence such as in Thomas's case. I would respectfully reply...When I returned to college at an age most are working on retirement I learned a great deal and it was an experience I will treasure and as great if not greater than I would have imagined. One of the lessons I learned was. The more I know ...the more I realized how little I know. Thanks again Jay I must say your approach has certainly matured and is much appreciated from your earlier review approach. 🎉

Whether listening to a perfect amplifer (out EXACTLY = in, just louder) or a mid range amp with minimal colouring of the sound. It is the sound engineers ears that we hear. I have no idea what the frequency response of my ears are. Does the engineer doing the final mix down take into account the frequency curve of thier own hearing and alter the mix to compensate? There is so much subjectivity involved in hearing that imho, once past the $1000 dollar mark for each item in the audio chain. The percived quality is down to EQ.

8:25 "it's not recessed in the sense as it's reduced in volume" but you need to crank it up to bring it a little bit forward into that sound stage". Now when you say crank it up, you mean increase the volume? The volume that's not reduced? That's one way of turning a negative into a positive. What might be even better is to say that it has the 🙂 sort of a dynamic signature because some people prefer that boosted treble and bass regions are more fun for some people to listen to. Now what happens to those boosted bass and treble regions when you increase the volume (That hasn't been reduced) in order to bring that mid-range forward into the sound stage. Are those bass and treble regions susceptible to early compression, since they are already slightly boosted? Especially with speakers which might already have a slightly boosted treble and bass regions? Depending upon which speakers you buy, synergy has suddenly become a bad word. I guess we'll have to just buy one and see. And hope that there's a good return policy in case that 🙂 dynamic curve isn't all we'd hoped for.

RMS power ratings are only part of the story. anyone remember the 1st gen Fosgate Punch 75 series amps for autos? 37.5 watts into 4 Ohms, but those amps pushed spl's like other amps 2 to 3 times Fosgate's specs. why? mosfets and huge capacitors. the Galion kind of reminds me of this engineering.

If I had 1500usd to spend on a stereo amp today, I'd go for a "new old stock" NAD c275bee which is running for 1200-1300usd currently (still not interested in their class D stuffs), and spend the rest of the fund on other components

Im about halfway through building the css 3tdx and I've been looking to try out some new amps. I assume it will have the css sound with more mid detail. Ive been looking at the ts75 but also some ganfet class d monoblocks. Do you think you could point me in a direction?

Depending on what you want and budget for the amp, I'd recommend OA starkrimson for a more neutral and balanced sound with snappier/faster attack and decay while I'd recommend the Galion TS A75 for a more deeper and wider soundstage with more bold and thicker presentation. AGD audions for the best of both worlds BUT much more expensive. (my choice would be the Galion specifically with CSS house sound if within certain budget)

Jay, How many output devices and the type used?? Mosfets, Transistors? Significant impact on load handling capacity. Transformers look like they're about sized for ~75 watts. A guess. I'm running Clayton monoblocks which does insert a different reference frame.

Good question. It’s a 200 watt transformer. I am not sure how many each, I didn’t sit there and count components. Probably better to ask Galion via email

A great review contents. But not sure how I feel about using aliexpress cabinet. Not to criticize but literally I am not sure if I can accept it or not as a branded product. Maybe it is ok, maybe it isn’t. Cannot decide yet. But definitely my heart will go with more genuine products made from authentic cabinet with own design for sure.

It really has the power it needs. Stop looking so much on watts. Too many give their numbers with distortions you won't listen too. A75 driving my power hungry speakers hust as well as my class A 2*50 and my 200w class ab that "gives"350w a 4 ohms". My 2*150w Hypex amp does not play well with those speakers.

Jay, do you have thoughts on this amp versus the Starkrimson ultra, or any of them ?
@Jayiyagi4 ай бұрын
Starkrimson is more "accurate" in the sense that its more neutral, faster, snappier, cleaner, crispier. The Galion is more of a musical option (for me) because it's deeper and wider in soundstage, smoother, bold, thicker, and airy.

My comments are on the appeaance side since I have not listened to this amp. 1. The galion logo ( the sails) are a bit offset to the left 2. The 'TS A75' writing on the upper righthand corner is ugly. it makes the amp look cheap. 3. The On/off label need not be written there. Anyone who owns this will definitely find the on/off button even without the label.
