I couldn’t agree more mate. I’m mid fifties now and the pubs are dire on a whole. Your local was where you went to celebrate, to commiserate, you went for a quiet drink after work or for the Saturday nite disco. You could buy most things off people in there, you could sell your car. You could find work and you could get a local tradesman for a job needing doing. Favours were swapped for favours. And on a Sunday lunchtime there were bowls of roast potatoes on the bar and the weekly meat and veg raffle. And let’s not forget the Working Men’s Clubs either. Keep up the good work mate. Dean.

Pubs. For me it was the smoking ban that did them in, caused the real damage. All our pubs were mobbed then. Everybody i knew's mum and dad were in the pub after work monday to monday. It was a home from home where everybody knew your name. Weddings, funerals and days at the football both home and away all started or finished up at the pub. I want dark panneling with glasses hanging above the bar. Brass, brewery mirrors and a piano sing song with the punters. I want smokey haze to redden my eyes and cheese and branston pickle quarter sannies to soak up the bubbles, i want to get pished and drown all my troubles with my friends. We never needed a mobile phone, just the number of the local pubs coz thats where everyone was.

Excellent. Smoking ban was the first blow then lockdown the knockout. Pubs are essential for individuals and communities. Weatherspoon and Northern pubs still get it thank goodness - you are still made welcome in both as a lone individual. Cheers to you Vin and all the best. 🍺🍷

Wetherspoons arguably aren't really pubs. They're diners with the superficial appearance of a public house. There's a place for them certainly, but they aren't the same as a pub.

Vinne, this is the best take I have heard about our butifull pubs. I used to love going to our pubs, but as a x alcoholic addict I have had to find new ways to socialise like the gym and long walks, I always say good day to everyone I see and you can tell on peoples faces some times that they really appreciate a simple good day so imagine what they would feel like if we took 5 mins out of our day just to have a chatt

I used to go to pubs frequently. Sometimes just for a couple of pints, a smoke and do a crossword. My local in North London, which I went to for a year before being accepted, was a cross section of bankers, car mechanics, prison warders, builders, railwaymen. The women were not harassed or hit upon. No violence, no fights. Strict landlady. A place to chill out, put the world to rights and some gentle inebreation. All gone now.
