The Soil Food Web School’s mission is to empower individuals and organizations to regenerate the soils in their communities. The Soil Food Web Approach can dramatically accelerate soil regeneration projects by focussing on the soil biome. This can boost the productivity of farms, provide super-nutritious foods, protect and purify waterways, and reduce the effects of Climate Change. No background in farming or biology is required for our Foundation Courses. Classes are online & self-paced, and students are supported by highly-trained Soil Food Web School mentors.
Over the last four decades, Dr. Elaine Ingham has advanced our knowledge of the Soil Food Web. An internationally-recognized leader in soil microbiology, Dr. Ingham has collaborated with other scientists and with farmers around the world to further our understanding of how soil organisms work together and with plants. Dr. Ingham is an author of the USDA's Soil Biology Primer and a founder of the Soil Food Web School.

This is so exciting! I’m a backyard gardener starting a food forest and some veggie beds. I’m going to try these principles here at home. I already laid woodchips, but because of lack of rain they aren’t breaking down very well. Adding compost tea should jumpstart the biology under them.

Terrific presentation Cory. I think this was one of the most comprehensive one I have seen both visual and information. The only other thing I would have like to see was a cost comparison at the end. You gave what you have spent on this process, but what would the cost have been for conventional ag? A couple panelist mentioned it but it would be neat to add to that last slide. Thank you Elaine and company for providing these.

You stated what I was thinking. I watched one video how someone used liquid fish fertilizer to double their hay production and they were like were organic. It's like that's great and all, but from an accounting and economic perspective you can't do a real cost comparison without data. I know local farmers by me that use cow manure and even wild horse manure from a feedlot housing wild horses for the government. It's maybe not as good as fish fertilizer, but is local and probably way cheaper. Although, I do think innovation and new types of fertilizers should be experimented with, but without doing a side by side trial using two methods and comparing the two no one can accurately say definitely which method is better. I do remember utah lake in utah a few years ago i believe killed their fish or carp or something I was told, and it was composted and a farmer bought it. But that's like a rare thing in. And even conventional ag really varies. In the midwest they probably use more synthetic stuff maybe, but if youre close to a feedlot you'll probably use manure.

@@koltoncrane3099 Check out Dr Johnson (Johnson Su bioreactor) its quite a simple process. And a reactor that is left alone for a year + will give thousands of strains of bacteria and fungi. Its pretty much free if you can soucre your own leaves and some horse manure. Jay Young on his farm did tests and this is his winning combination a. 60% corn stalks, 20% grass clippings, 10% horse manure, 10% woodchips (50-70% carbon source (leaves are great), with some manure and green source like grass clipping without fungicide or herbicide)

Very positive results with getting biology added with the seed planting! That is the same conclusion I came to for this spring's plantings. .. Re "Alfalfa uses 3/10in water/day" -- Where are your source seeds grown? Are the seeds effectively bred for high moisture environments that through soil improvements you are better matching? Can you save seed from your low moisture environment to better adapt to local conditions? My research is pointing to two factors involved: soil is huge but so is the impact of crop seed adaptations. Both must operate like wheels on a motorcycle to get anywhere. So I've incorporated concepts from Joseph Lofthouse Landrace Gardening to my experiments.

I’m in central NM, upper Chihuahuan Desert, 5000’ elevation, zone 7a. I’d love to take your classes but I’m too old, disabled and broke. I’m still learning from you though. Not as deeply as I want but an attentive viewer can discern much. I’m interested in the microscopy and manipulation of the biome of the soil. But I’m on 1.25 acres, a tiny piece of land. Doesn’t matter though because the wee critters will live here too if I do my part.

I know this is old but, do you think the annual locust swarms, in America, will return if no till farming gets popular enough in their historical egg deposition sites ie., the eastern side of the rocky mountain range? It is my understanding these swarms were wiped out by tillage along this egg laying area.
@ralfnuggs165
@ralfnuggs165 4 ай бұрын
Ideally you’d have a mulch. Soul life would compete with the eggs and the swarms wouldn’t get as out of control. Granted yeah tilling is how you get rid of them, but you really only have to take the surface. And no till doesn’t mean you can’t Till the top 5 inches every once in a few years in my opinion

Newbie here. Looking for clarification: I’ve seen spraying compost through a sprayer on the foliage. Is it not possible to foliar spray (not irrigation) through a ground rig sprayer the compost tea??
@BigWesLawns
@BigWesLawns 11 ай бұрын
Garden Like a Viking channel talks about that and has a method of spraying. I dont believe you wanna use hydroponics systems with the liquids, but he rigs up a submersible pump and a 55 gal bucket, and has a good amount of spray happening. I hand pump spray and dont own a hose end sprayer yet, because they seem to be too small, and I want a bigger jug, maybe i will invent one. Its work, but its easy once we learn to work with it. 🇨🇦👊🏻👨🏻‍🏭✨💖🙏

Why didn't he just cover crop it back to a decent ph over time and just keep laying it down and 're testing and covering acordingly with direct covers that bring the soil back to where it wanted to be. Rather than just adding compost.
