2012-12-14 - CSA Astronaut Chris Hadfield, while training in Star City Russia, gives us an introduction to the Sokol ("Falcon") suit. This pressurized outfit is worn inside the Soyuz spacecraft during travel to and from the International Space Station (ISS). Hadfield will be launching on board the Soyuz December 19, 2012 to become Canada's first Commander of the ISS.

That's a bit unexpected. The way you "seal" that suit, by implementing multiple folds that are literally tied off afterwords, is the exact same way they teach us to seal our waterproof bags in the US Army. Same fold pattern, same tie off. I always wondered "Just how effective can this really be at keeping water out?". Well, now I have a lot more faith in it, lol.

+SkylerKing While I don't know the specifics, I would be very surprised if that seal isn't significantly better than the material around the seal (in your example, the bag itself).

In the army I suppose I could understand the use of this method of sealing, since we're not talking about air pressure but merely water. Also the fact that it needs to be able to be mass produced. For astronauts I would surely think that there would be a better and faster method for sealing the suit from external pressure, given the fact that there's only so few astronauts and they operate in possibly one of the most extreme environments. Maybe in the future?

Kouga forward looking designs have the astronaut climb in through the back of the suit, and then pull down the life support pack and seal it over the hole, essentially having a big, square, hard-rimmed door to seal with a gasket and fasteners

@@KougaJ7 American suits use zippers for the pressure seal, even in the Mercury program. The seal you see here is what the Soviets designed in 1973 and it's never been changed.

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. It's not about following the law - perfectly, as it's impossible - it's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction). He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way. Because of gravity, the heart works harder to pump blood into your head. However, because he’s in microgravity, his face swells up, because it’s easier to pump the blood.

The human circulatory system is optimized for life on earth, where extra pressure is needed to send blood to your head. In a weightless environment the circulatory system now sends too much blood to the upper body, causing swelling and "flu-like" symptoms such as a stuffy nose.

remember, the air pressure is from the inside of the suit. Bound up right, that hole would be as strong or stronger than the seams in the rest of the suit.. certainly not a weak link.

The US suits simply use O-ring based locking rings, like that used for something as simple as waterproof flashlights. Not particularly hard to make. I would think the Russian system depends on suit overpressure to ensure nothing enters the suit, and that a small amount of outbound leakage is probably expected.

He looks older on earth because his bodily fluids are pulled down by gravity so his face has less liquids in it, making it look more gaunt and pale. In space, the bodily fluids are distributed evenly through his body so he has a pinker, juicier face in zero-gravity. That's my theory anyways.
@TheMinecraftinvader

in space low gravity causes liquids to rush to the head and makes your head swell causing less ''wrinkles'' , also just body lines or wrinkles would virtually disappear because in space gravity does not affect your spine so it makes you taller :D
@bob46802
@bob46802 11 жыл бұрын
This is correct. Your heart no longer has to fight gravity to pump blood into your head and brain, which cause massive headaches. Your spine is also no longer compressed by gravity so you can get pretty bad back pains too. I think the record for growth in space from your spine stretching out was about 2 inches.

A lot of thinking goes on space suits and the security of astronaouts a lot of trial an error must be done a really working suit on for any emergency. Picture this, a ziplock is made of plastic, what if there's a lot of heat in the capsule and the plastic melts, that cord may be able to withstand more heat than plastic and it is easier to manipulate. Fancy is not allways functional in some scenarios.

Yes. But that was because the ring was too cold for the violence of a launch and was used outside of the engineering specs. These suits aren't meant to be used outside the space station or capsule, so they stay relatively warm and pliable, and aren't being vibrated like the Challenger booster.

Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans. How does this get fixed? Well, mercy said "I dont want to give them what they deserve. I don't want them to be cut off from Me. I love them despite all they have done/will do against Me. I want to give My children another chance. I want them to come home and live in My love again". But the evil had to still be dealt with, as God - being good - cannot simply let evil off scott-free. Like a judge can't let a murderer off scott-free, otherwise it shows approval of it. And so, love said "Jesus, God's Son, came down as a Man, our representative, suffering every temptation, pain and struggle we have ever faced, yet without sin. Living perfectly ON OUR BEHALF. He took all our sins (past/present/even future) to the cross and then crucified EVERY ONE on our behalf, like paying the fine to legally free us. Justice was paid on the cross so that we can be free from Hell's punishment, experience Gods mercy of forgiveness of sin and live in His love. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (turn away from our sin and pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. Chris is wrong about blood boiling if the vehicle lost pressurization. Blood is contained in a closed system and is under pressure, so it would not boil. Moisture in the nose and in the mouth would boil above the Armstrong line, but not blood. Consciousness would be lost in about 15 seconds, followed by cardiac arrest as blood PO2 fell.

Technically speaking, time travels slower while in orbit. So much so that the clocks on satellites have to run slightly faster to stay synced with ones on the ground. So in a way, Nasa and everyone else who has ever launched something into space has inadvertently made a time machine. This is Einstein's theory of relativity in a nutshell: The faster something goes, the slower time is for it, and things in orbit travel faster than you could possibly imagine.

What, no ziplok seal? Not even a twist tie? Nothing like putting your clothes folding and shoelace tying experience to the ultimate test... Yup, Joe would have survived if he had used the corned beef knot... Yeah, I'll pass on a space trip in that suit.

True but not relevant to the effect he is describing. The station is orbiting in free-fall so everything inside it is weightless.
