The Venus stacked image is amazing. It shows what an 8" might be capable of, looking toward the sun. Imaging using a 5x Barlow might be a challenge for a crisp view, but why not try? We're amateur astronomers after all. I was amazed at Jupiter with bands or Saturn rings just with a 4.5" on an EQ mount, and it had me hooked. @@eMBO_Gaming, we had a nice couple of evenings this past week, and I brought it out to view some of the winter favorite DSOs, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, and dim Saturn. In the meantime, I had bought a used little Celestron FirstScope for breaks in cloudy nights and dashing out. I wanted to experiment with the little 76mm scope, and have the XT8 out as well, for "better" viewing. With better than supplied eyepieces, the little scope will do what I want it to as a small, portable unit, and I actually used the 8" as a spotter scope most of the viewings!! (using the red dot on the 8 to start of course). ...I got the XT8 on craigslist, used once and still in it's original box, for $325. Keep an eye out for used scopes if you get the chance. @@leemyersastronomy1867 yeah , i had 4inch F4 Newt when i started , its a light bucket indeed . But i was in to visual back then , and as all beginner's i pushed magnification too much . About 120x , it just didnt work . I sold it . Looking back now with Astrophotography in mind i see that i used it improper . I shouldn't push it with magnification , and i should have flocked the tube , removed protruding focuser , shortened it , and removed clips holding the mirror cell or at least cover it and same for secundary mirror . To make a clean Light path and use it with DSLR not for visual . And with those modification it would have been Fine for imagining of DSO. Not as good as this 8 inch , but good enough for DSO. Im really drawn back to Newtonians these days , they can be good but just require some Love so to say , some attention and they can do very good indeed .

@@leemyersastronomy1867 Im drawn to catadioptric as well they have low field curvature and are compact . But they are specialized type of scope , its not a first scope . Witch is not a problem for me now since i already have starter scope , such as 80ED. So im looking in to Faster newtonians , and longer Catadioptric . Im drawn to Maksutov design my self, because of its small central obstruction , giving high contrast images . Things like that . So ill probably in future get an 8 inch F4 newtonian , and some Catadioptric for Moon planets and smaller DSOs. No need to rush it i still have lots to image with 80ED , and 72mm F4,5 refractor . I was building up my rig for the long time , still having lots to image .

I also managed to make observations of the Moon and planets, but for filming I only managed to film the Moon with my Huawei smartphone. Amazing! I’m wondering why not use 5x Barlow for all of them?
@leemyersastronomy18674 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I used the 5x Barlow with the smartphone setup to increase image scale as it was eyepiece projection. For Jupiter using the ZWO 120MC and 5x Barlow with the 6” F5 Newtonian at F25 it was a little over sampled but not too much of an issue. If I used it with the 8” F5.9 it would have put things at F30ish which would have severely dimmed the planet and reduced the frame rate (Especially for Uranus and Neptune). To put it in context Uranus was running at approximately 10 frames per second during capture. If I used the 5x I would have needed to increase exposure at the longer focal length, further reducing the frame rate making it very difficult to focus.

@leemyersastronomy18674 жыл бұрын
Thank you. If you have just the 25mm Plossl that comes with the Apertura try a good quality wide field 10-12mm eyepiece for a higher magnification of the planets which will cater for the average day of seeing conditions. A 5mm would deliver great results during the odd days of great seeing. For deep sky unless you are living in a area with little to no light pollution don’t expect to see much. Investing in a suitable camera and taking longer exposures will bring out the details from your backyard. A smartphone attached to the eyepiece via a cheap adapter can do this using an app like Nightcap if you are on a budget.

@leemyersastronomy18674 жыл бұрын
The Meade series 5000 UWA 5.5mm is a wonderful eyepiece for the price and is very close to matching ones which cost 100s more. There is a slight chance your laser collimator may require collimating itself. When clamped facing a wall the red dot should remain still upon rotating the laser. Personally prefer a Cheshire or collimation cap for collimation but that’s subjective.

What's the difference from an 8" dobsonian and an 8" newtonian. PS:im a rookie
@leemyersastronomy18674 жыл бұрын
Dobsonian refers to the design of the Newtonian’s mount. In this case I started photography with the Dobsonian mount then removed the Newtonian optical tube later to put it on an equatorial mount.

I can never seem to get my phone up to the eyepiece to see it. How did you do it with your phone?
@leemyersastronomy18674 жыл бұрын
I used a cheap phone adapter which positions and hold the phone over the eyepiece with a little manual adjustment. If you google “Telescope phone adapter” they should come up. Happy New Year!

are there major viewing differences between 6" and 8" that you observed?
@leemyersastronomy18674 жыл бұрын
Good question. The 8” shows the planets slightly brighter and pulls out a little more subtle features but I wouldn’t say it’s a major difference to the 6”. I’d say the jump from a 6” to a 10” would make a very noticeable difference.

If you are debating which one to get, it means u can probably afford both. I would say get an 8”

That's voodoo to be able to get that out of a 8" Newton...

How different do you think the images would be using an 8” SCT that’s F10 compared to the F5 you used? Like everyone has said, your pics are absolutely stunning. I’m just curious about what the difference would be or if you could even tell.
@kevingumfory2 жыл бұрын
Yours will be outstanding the f5 is just "faster" to get the light. You are about to fall in love. Expect this though ... dont expect the nasa lies.

How long does it take to see any planet ?
@leemyersastronomy18674 жыл бұрын
The closer planets Mercury to Saturn can easily be seen by the naked eye appearing as bright “Stars” in the sky. Uranus and Neptune are trickier requiring a little navigation of the sky but depending on equipment and experience the time it takes to see them varies. Personally it took about half an hour to resolve Uranus and Neptune when manually guiding the Dobsonian, reduced to around 10 minutes using the “GOTO” setup of the equatorial mount.
