The Solfege Song in the Key of C

I realized a while ago that there aren't any good Solfege songs- we have songs about Solfege, and some of them are great- but we don't have any nice songs written specifically for Solfege syllables, so I decided to write one!
In working on the song and the video, I tried to make things simple enough that anyone could sing along, but I also wanted to capture these simple lines from as many angles as I could. One of the things I love about Solfege is how it connects to the deep relationships between the notes in the scale. We could just as easily sing "G E G, G A G"- but those letters would never help us realize that "A F# A, A B A" share the same relationship. It's because of this that I like to think of Solfege as "relationship" terms- similar to words like Mom, Dad, Brother, and Sister. Now, obviously it's not a direct correlation- there is no solfege equivalent to "Mom," but there is also no sort of friend or family relationship that's similar to what 'Re' and 'So' share- and once you get into how these notes are connected- that's a relationship worth remembering too!
So as you watch and sing along to this video- think about how these solfege characters relate to each other. Each Solfege note (Do Re Mi) has it's own personality. Each note has other notes that it likes, and some that it dislikes (those relationships are fun too). And each note has a moment and a context when it shines in the song. So watch with curiosity!
I'd also like to give a huge thanks to my Solfege teacher, Ms. Sarah Shafer, for singing for this video- I hope the rest of the world gets to experience at least a little of the solfege joy that you've brought to so many already!
Special Note on the word "So"
Traditional spelling of Solfege syllables spells the note 'So" as "Sol', but the L is silent and should not be sung. So rather than include the traditional spelling in this video, I have spelled it as "So" to better reflects how it should sound when singing. And for all those purists out there, I assure you that this is not the first change to happened to our Solfege sounds. Each one of our solfege syllables is well over 1,000 years old, and many of them have changed quite a lot in that thousand years.

none of the amateurs American musicians I know understand do re mi etc so my conclusion is that solfeggo is not a regular practice in music teaching in the us which is really said. It’s such a great part of understanding the music before you play it.

JUST. WOW! And a huge thank you! I’ve been a musician my whole life, but never learned solfeggio. I recently returned to music school and if it weren’t for this KZbin channel, I don’t know what I would do. I just discovered you today and what a blessing. Keep up the great work!🎉❤

Great song! Could you make a follow up video with you showing the position of the hands, are they always at the same height or they move up and down? Thanks
@nathanwalby283
@nathanwalby283 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The hand positions do stay the same height between each other from song to song, but I do want to make a follow up video to show how the notes on the piano and colors associated with the hand signs change when you're in a different key. Since this song is in the key of C- 'Do' gets to be a C on the piano and is red, but if the song was in the key of D- Do would be 'D' on the piano and it would be orange. So hopefully I'll release a similar video showing that relationship soon.

Definitely! But it will also help sharpen your musical mind. Once you feel good with the first half of the video, try the second half by yourself to build your confidence.

Hi, Did you select the colours randomly or there is a reason a certain colour is associated with the degrees of the scale ?
@VisualMusicalMinds
@VisualMusicalMinds 10 ай бұрын
When I originally created my color system, I did it based on the boomwacker colors- which is basically an upside down rainbow. If I had a choice, I would want the rainbow to look correct, which would make B orange and D sort of pinkish/purple, but since boomwackers were already well established at that point, what I really wanted was to push for a mass adoption of a color system, so I did it that way. A few years later, Google Music labs out adopt the same colors, and quite a lot of others use this reverse rainbow now. But at least in my mind, I attribute that initial use of this color system to the boomwacker inventors.

@@VisualMusicalMinds But if you want to teach kids something then do it right! This is not a matter of opinion... It is SoL and if you want to teach someone something then teach them the right things!

That's why I do it, I don't want kids to add an L on the end of So. These terms are pedagogical, they aren't fixed or set in stone. So I disagree with the pedagogical application of the L, so that's why I omit it- and I hope someday, future generations will look back and say 'Remember when So use to end with L and Ti was Si?' (I also agree with the past generation's replacement of 'Si')
