True History of Robin Hood

True History of Robin Hood

2 жыл бұрын

After a few earlier 'son of Robin Hood' films, this 1958 installment bit the bullet and took the title for real! The film sees the tyrannical Duke Simon de Roche imprison the regent Earl of Chester before the coronation of the "boy prince" (presumably Henry the Third!). The Earl manages to tip off the old guard of Sherwood Forest, but with Robin Hood long dead, they fear the people won't rally to their cry. When they hear Robin had a child, they dispatch him to England to lead their cause - only it isn't a son of Robin Hood, but a daughter, Deering Hood!
This is where the film completely derails - what could have been a wonderfully interesting story is overcome by typical Hollywood misogyny by having Little John reject the idea that the men would possibly rally around a woman. Jamie, the man mistaken for Robin's son by the duke's men, is convinced to stand in as Deering, with the real child of Robin Hood acting undercover as the man's wife.
While a typical mindless sword-and-castle flick, there remains a bitter tinge to the way Deering is handled, especially when compared to the wonderfully executed Marianne in "Rogues of Sherwood Forest" eight years earlier. Thankfully, the daughter of Robin Hood story would finally be told properly with the Keira Knightley vehicle "Princess of Thieves" in 2001 (also on this channel!). "The Son of Robin Hood" is a fun romp, but the unfortunate misogyny taints what should be your basic Sunday afternoon adventure.
Starring James Bond's David Hedison (here Al Hedison) as Jamie, June Laverick as Deering Hood, David Farrar as Duke Simon Des Roches, Marius Goring as Earl of Chester, Delphi Lawrence as Lady Sylvia, George Coulouris as Alan A. Dale, and George Woodbridge as Little John.

Though full of historical inaccuracies, the script is reasonably intelligent and reasonably well-acted, with reasonably good production values.

Awesome movie….I don’t care what anyone else says about it. This is a very good movie with a very good story behind it, good actors/actresses. I love the older movies, they didn’t have CGI to create it and many artists were involved with its creation and production. It took a lot of people, time, planning and effort to make these movies and that is what I appreciate them for, and about this film with all those people who put it together for our entertainment. HIGH 5 to all, just enjoy and quit over judging the oldies. They put more effort into them with their smaller budgets than what I’ve seen lately, even the storylines are becoming poorer in quality. People are forgetting how to write up good storylines and movies. ❤️❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I didn't say it wasn't a good movie. I enjoyed it despite the American accents , & I'm sure not all American actors would be as bad as Dick Van Dyke at attempting a British accent

As already stated this is not a history lesson ,this is my fourth Robin Hood film(Rogue of Sherwood Forest1950.Prince of Thieves 1948 and Bandit of Sherwood Forest1946 if your interested)in a week and none of them have been historically accurate but all have been entertaining . Out of the four films I think Rogue of Sherwood Forest was the best and this one would be Fourth not because it's bad just that the other three IMHO were better. A nice surprise in this one was George Woodbridge as Little John I think it must have been the largest role of his career and he was very good(He usually plays innkeepers or landlords). I will seek out more Robin Hood films and just up they are as enertaining thanks for posting.

All-in-all, as light entertainment, it was fine. Some predictability, but none-the-less, enjoyable. And to those ‘critics’ here who nitpick, ‘Robin Hood’ was not a real series of events. It was (historical?) fantasy told in ballads in the 14th century. - BG

23:18 - “My page!” - As if everyone is going to think pretty lady “Fair legs” is a boy! And…..WHY? If James is impersonating Deering, what is the reason to attempt to disguise the lady as a boy? As his wife, “Jamie” would make far more sense. Oh, well, I guess people not being able to tell a man from a woman isn’t a problem that is just peculiar to today!
