This young woman is a student people it is a beautiful instrument these are difficult and nuanced songs. I believe that one has to have some life experience under ones belt to sing these really authentically. My former teacher the late Soprano, Chloe Owen sang these in her sixties and they were gorgeous. I believe that she has precisely the voice that these songs call for. Everyone thinks that Lise Davidsen is so great but this young woman is pure potential.

I love this! This is easily my favorite master class. First of all, the student here is great (such a lovely voice!) and she seems very nice. They obviously get along very well with Ms Horne - whom I adore. She is such a great teacher but also so funny, witty and warm - it's great to watch her teaching. And I absolutely love her stories. But what surprises me the most is how Miss Horne's voice has remained so good - seriously, I didn't expect that 15:58. How her voice is this firm and flexible is beyond me. At 80 years of age...that's very impressive. And that 16:15... She's so funny! And completely right. ;D

As a German native speaker, I feel that the singer has no idea what she is singing. Moreover, she has apparently never dealt with proper articulation. The vowels are formed incorrectly, accordingly I cannot understand a word.

Really? I’m not a native, so it’s obviously a bit different but I can still understand many words. Sure, it’s not the best possible pronunciation but I think it’s quite clear. At least for foreigners ears. Interesting.

Regrettably the student doesn't have any clue what she's singing about. And even more unfortunately Marilyn Horne - who I really like! - either! The german words are pronounced in an totally wrong way, the breath-bows which are needed in all of the 4 last songs are not there, the vowels are darkened, the pronounciation is as weak as the intonation. Sometimes Horne gets a finger on the flat notes, in my eyes too seldom! @Caskader: The German-Lied-Godess Christa Ludwig would sometimes have asked the student, if she knows about what she was singing! I recommend to hear the recordings of Jessye Norman (with Kurt Masur), Lucia Popp (with Georg Solti) and (somehow old-fashioned) Elisabeth Schwarzkopf with George Szell. That's singing at it's best! And a real interpretation of the Text! By the way: It's a shame for a student of singing not to know Maria Jeritza! Especially in New York and in Carnegie Hall!

With all due respect to Ms.Horne, it seems a bit rude and self indulgent to keep the student, the pianist and the audience waiting to begin while she tells anecdotes about herself, her career and acquaintances.

I disagree. How long will we have this older generation around to connect us to the past?. And I will bet that the singer began to relax a bit by listening to her stories. There was plenty of time to sing, after all.
