Neil once said that 'Heart of Gold' put him in the middle of the road - but the middle of the road is boring, he headed straight for the ditch on his next album. Neil's a unique musical genius for sure, whether behind his acoustic guitar, or strapping on Old Black and letting loose with Crazy Horse. Great choice, and great reaction as always - cheers from Canada!

the manner of the song-writing varies in success based on the songwriter/performer... some people are storytellers and are fascinating: John Prine, Jonie Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Robbie Robertson, Kate Bush, Lennon/McCartney- and some people excel at the autobio songs- such as Neil, Lou Reed (and Jonie). Pete Townshend is sometimes too much in his own head, as is Roger Waters. but I love Neil. even his "failures" aka the Geffen years were more interesting than most musicians' successes

I think that he is searching the world for someone with a heart of gold, but he's not finding that person no matter for how long he searches, and he's getting old in the process. Like he's gonna die one day and he would have never found a good hearted person. And he might be longing for him to have a heart of gold inside of himself.
