🧙 The Song Valyrian Steel Sings | House of the Dragon

You may not have noticed in episode 8 of House of the dragon because you too were sobbing uncontrollably over the death of viserys, but something very odd happened in the king’s chambers. And no I don’t mean the rat in his valyrian sculpture. #threeeyedrat. After Viserys accidentally spills the beans on the song of ice and fire to Alicent, she leaves the room while Viserys gasps his last breaths and the camera pans over to the valyrian steel dagger. The camera lingers on it for quite a long time, and out of nowhere comes this high pitched sound effect. Musical and magical, the steel singing. Why is that dagger singing? And can Viserys hear it?

It is indeed the sound of the valyrian steel and not a sound effect added for only the audience to hear. The blades make this sound when in motion, or when wind whistles off them. Jon's sword makes the sound in battle vs the white walker at Hardhome. Again this same dagger makes the sound when Arya drops it before catching it with her opposite hand to stab the Night King. We can hear wind breezing in the King's chambers and Alicent's footfalls as she walks away from Viserys and I think it was just the blade reverberating or vibrating as a result.
@simpvanas
@simpvanas Жыл бұрын
Another thought, the shot of the dagger is between Viserys and Alicent as she walks away from him. I would say this symbolizes the divide between Alicent and her children and Viserys' wishes for Rhaenyra to be Queen. This moment, this misunderstanding, has just cut the realm in two and what better way to signify that than show the dagger. The use of motifs in music and film are interesting. I think the sound just implies that a different sort of darkness is about to fall upon Westeros. Not the white walkers, not yet at least, but war. This misunderstanding between Alicent and Viserys' dying words is in itself another motif in ASOIAF. Robert's Rebellion was started because of a misunderstanding of the truth, as is the encroaching civil war of the Dance of the Dragons.

You forgot the other possible clue about Valyrian steel singing in ep. 8: Helayna grabbing her ears after the use of Dark Sister to kill Vamond (and after aforementioned dagger was drawn by the king). If, in fact, the blade holds the soul, let’s say of the woman who founded the Faceless Men, then the dagger totally fits for Arya. I wait for the books for how much the dagger holds in the prophecy though…

Not related to the dagger but to Valyrian steel and maybe to add about it being real within the show : i really wonder if that Valyrian steel "singing" could be one of the reason Helaena covers her ears when Vaemond is killed. I know she is hinted to be on the spectrum of autism, or/and being hypersensitive to sound, and it could be the only reasons. But i find it weird how well we can see her covering her ears, especially since she is a Targaryen with "magical abilities" (not really sure if the visions can qualify as magic but maybe ?).

I came to make sure someone pointed this out. It's a VERY distinct sound. I want to say it's only when facing and ice sword, tho. Or a creature of ice. I think this very blade made such a song when Arya wields it at the end. And it's a magical sound, one that does not dissipate over distance as normal sounds do. So no ruptured ear drums and it travels at the speed of light, meaning an observer 500 meters distant would hear almost the same thing as one 30 feet away. Also, a league is 3 miles. 20k leagues is twice around the world.

Viewing the video I noticed a detail on the dagger I had not noticed before. Next to the hilt their is a seven pointed star, which would be strange since it was forged before the Conquest. On that note it was interesting to me that Rhaenyra made Luke and Jace swear to The Seven not to use violence before they left Dragonstone. From A Feast of Crows: “Three hundred years ago, when Aegon the Dragon landed beneath this very hill, the High Septon locked himself within the Starry Sept of Oldtown and prayed for seven days and seven nights, taking no nourishment but bread and water. When he emerged he announced that the Faith would not oppose Aegon and his sisters, for the Crone had lifted up her lamp to show him what lay ahead. If Oldtown took up arms against the Dragon, Oldtown would burn, and the Hightower and the Citadel and the Starry Sept would be cast down and destroyed. Lord Hightower was a godly man. When he heard the prophecy, he kept his strength at home and opened the city gates to Aegon when he came. And His High Holiness anointed the Conqueror with the seven oils.” Soon after this Aegon supposedly converted to the Faith of the Seven. So maybe he had the star added to the dagger.

Great video. While you sort of touched on this, I think a more direct link between the dagger and the Targaryen kingsblood is necessary. The dagger took Rhaenyra's blood in episode 7, via Alicent. I believe that was used to imbue the blade with more "fire". I think the dagger will be used to shed more dragons blood by the end of the series. We are leveling up the dagger and imbuing it with Kingsblood before it is ultimately hot enough to take out the Night's King. This is basically cannon, to me already.

7:03 Corbray? Interesting. I was doing a deep dive into the asoiaf wiki trying to see if I could figure out how the dagger went from Aegon II to Petyr Baelish (Littlefinger). Littlefinger’s family tree only goes back to Sellsword Baelish. “The great-grandfather of Petyr Baelish was a Braavosi sellsword that came to the Vale of Arryn in the service of Lord Corbray.” I actually didn’t catch Ser Gwayne Corbray’s name when I was watching your video, but the sword’s name stood out to me in the quote about “his lady” so when I clicked on the Corbray family and saw their Valyrian steel sword was named Lady Forlorn I realized the connection.

I caught that on a re-watch. I had nearly this exact thought and was working on a tinfoil theory of my own: Valyrian weapons are made via human sacrifice with the souls binding the steel. The souls of the sacrificed inhabit the steel. The souls do "sing", or at the very least, can be made to sing by an expert user. The sounds are imperceptible audibly but can reach subconsciously to certain people with an affinity for it's magic, dreamers like Viserys and greenseers. The First men sacrificed human souls to their trees and the trees are also filled with the souls of dead CotF which constitutes the hivemind of the Weirnet. Bran must eat a weirwood paste that contains what looks like blood (Jojen paste theory) to fully access the weirnet and enable his body to be a suitable host for whatever the being currently inhabiting Bloodraven's decayed body is(3-Eyed Crow). That being (3EC) is able to see thru time and even influence events past, present and future. It can use dreams, various living things, including the trees, animals and, in my opinion with this theory, the still living souls bound inside valyrian steel. The 3EC is using all of it's abilities throughout time to influence the events of ASOIAF, even this event during episode 8 was the 3EC using the dagger to "sing" to Viserys, who in his fevered, delirious and dying state, repeated bits of the message as he lays dying, purposely leading events into the direction of it's choosing. The theory is not fully fleshed out, and it mixes a lot of book and show things, but I'm just glad to see someone also spotted what I spotted in the episode (the singing dagger) and is thinking roughly along the same lines.

Is it possible that the song of ice and fire is the sound made in the clash between ice and fire? In other words, so valyrian steel and dragon glass have shared properties that, when they come in contact with ice, emit a shared sound/sonic vibration? And maybe it’s this exact noise that destroys white walkers rather than the material itself.

Finally, someone making a link to Moorcock's works inside ASOIAF To add to this, Valyrian/Targaryen are basically Melnibonean ; the Others are close to the Fhoi Miore ; and Bloodraven and his rivalry with Bittersteel could be assimilated to Elric, albino also, and Yyrkoon, Shaira being Cymoril The last one could be a bit a of stretch, but Moorcock's influence is so ignored that I would be willing to give anything to him

I've been rereading the Mistborn series to brush up on my Cosmere lore for The Lost Metal next month so I have to give a shout out for the sword Nightblood. It's not my favorite magic sword but it's pretty damn cool. I mean, one nick from it will turn you into a puff of black smoke and it constantly tells its weilder to destroy. It's done some other awesome things but that gets into spoilers.

Viserys telling Alicent was an absolutely necessary evil because almost every casual viewer seems thinks Viserys is an unimpeachable saint and Alicent is the evil witch from snow white twirling a handlebar mustache in a dark room going mirror mirror on the wall. They will refuse to accept anything beyond the binary of Disney villains. So if this creates even a little bit of ethical quandary in their minds, that the subtle-er aspects of Alicent's character (of which there was a multitude) didn't create in them, then it's actually a good thing. It is a much needed push in the right direction to not make the seizure of power so black and white. Because right now it's been firmly Team Black=good. But I'm hoping the lines will be more blurred in season 2, which means less Gendry type escapes. Since there is a prophesy in show verse, I'd much rather Viserys tell Alicent "you are the one", cause at least it puts a bow on top of every single bad decision Viserys made which most of the viewership ignored, cause they can't compartmentalize a sympathetic father from a godawful king. It gives Alicent a morally strong impetus to carry out the coup since she legitimately didn't know who he was talking about. It gives the average fan a visual marker that it is indeed Viserys who is most responsible for the Dance.

Viserys was an awful king and father. Him failing to train Rhae, failing to punish Daemon, failing to see Rhaes bastrads for what they are, failing to give Aemond justice for losing his eye (which leads to him doing..........you know) and him thinking his word was enough to secure Rhaes position. He forgot how he became king, the lords of Westeros chose him.
@chancefurlong372
@chancefurlong372 Жыл бұрын
@@theelectricprince8231 Exactly. I completely agree. He himself was "elected" so how hypocritical it is for him to trample on the very legacy that made him king. Viserys was a godawful father to his other children and an even more godawful king. Completely agreed. But this was more about the justification of including the prophesy in the story.

Was the sword calling for Alicent ? “If” she had heard the calling, would she know what to do with it? and “if” she could read it, maybe this would stop the fighting for the throne. Let’s say she doesn’t, who will know how heat the blade, and understand the meaning? Lots of “if’s”……

That doesn't make sense. "Valyrian steel doesn't cause infections because the blades cut clean." Infections don't necessarily come from the blade, but from bacteria in the air, in the bandages, etc. Clean cuts don't heal as well because the smooth sides of the wound have less to grip onto and so are susceptible to infection for longer.

I like to think that Aegon inherited the dagger, and that it was actually either originally made for Danys the dreamer or her father before escaping the doom. Otherwise, who would have forged it? Possibly a smith of Qohor when Aegon was fighting outside of Westeros pre-Conquest but idk that there is evidence for that

Aegon's prophecy _did come through!_ Arya Stark is of the blood of Aegon the Conqueror by way of Bloodraven and 'Mad' Danelle Lothston. Bloodraven and 'Mad' Danelle Lothston, the Lady of Harenhal had a child and after that Danelle got deposed for sorcery, human sacrifice and what not, Bloodraven, who was Hand of the King around this time leveraged his position _to ensure that this child was made (or married) the Lord of Harrenhal_ under the name of Whent. Just consider the sigils of House Lothston and House Whent. The Lothston sigil is _a single black bat on a field of gold and silver_ while the Whent sigil is _many black bats on a field of pure gold_ So from the single bat of House Lothston, came the many bats of House Whent. This by itself denotes the continuation of a bloodline. Also considering that House Lothston went down in disgrace, _isnt it passing strange that its successor would choose an almost identical sigil as Lords of Harrenhal?_ Arya, like Bran is thus a _direct descendant_ of Bloodraven and 'Mad' Danelle Lothston because their mother was Lady Catelyn Tully, and her mother was Lady Minisia _Whent!_ It would explain why Bloodraven took such an interest in Bran and it would explain why Arya was the one to kill the Night King in the show. If this is true, then the blood of Aegon the Conqueror runs through the veins of all of the current Starks. Prophecy is described as a sword without a hilt, a weird thing that does not always turn out the way you're expecting it to turn out. While Rhaegar was fixated on fulfilling prophecy by making a special magic baby, he did fulfill it, but in another way, by forcing Ned Stark to marry Catelyn Tully for her father's army, the two ancient bloodlines were joined.

The fact the prophecy is on that Valerian steel dagger changes the context of the murder plot against Bran, the cut throat had this dagger. Then the dagger found it's way into Arya's hands in the show to kill the Night's King and beat the White Walkers. This actually kinda makes the Season 8 GOT make a little more sense.

I simply mustn't be the only one that feels compelled to note that a league is 3 miles, not 1.5. A Roman League varied in length, and was about 1.4 miles but in the English speaking world, a league has always been 3 miles. GRRM lived in England. He was inspired partly by Hadrian's wall when he stood on it in England (not when it was Roman which a bit before his birth). The War of the Roses is the main inspiration. And this is a Medieval feudal story. Valyria is the Roman equivalent in the story. Westeros is Europe or Great Britain. As an American that lived in England, writing a Medieval story set in a fantastical feudal england, Martin is no doubt referring to an english league. A sound can be heard for miles and not damage an observer who sits only a few yards distant. And this is magic. I say it could be magic swords sound almost the same to someone 30 ft away as they do to a person 3000 ft away

I hated the scene in GoT when the quohorian blacksmith reworks ice into the two Valyrian steel swords given to Joff and Jaime BY POURING THE METAL INTO MOLDS 🤦🏻‍♂️. That would make incredibly brittle steel. everyone knows to make a strong sword you take strong steel and heat it until it’s slightly soft, then beat it into shape with a hammer, and then quickly cool it in water.
