I’m tired of fans overlooking the horrid pop in, unpolished graphics such as trees/grass, lack of momentum, glitching, reused forces models for laziness, dull colorless setting, random boxes and rails floating in the sky that are reused in every island, and much more just because it’s “a step in the right direction”.

Amy has always had Tarot cards, it's always been implied to be how she has good intuition and it was how she met Sonic, her having them for combat isn't the problem, if anything its a welcomed expansion to her moveset, its that her Hammer shouldn't play a backseat to them when its been just as part of her character, even marketed with her as flying is to Tails or Gliding/Climbing is with Knuckles. And the story poorly explains that, they say she can't use her hammer, but don't explain why or how its just her hammer. Yet she can use it for Cyhammer and it damages enemies. The big issue is that most of her tarot moveset just copies abilities she could already do with her hammer, so she isn't do anything she couldn't already do with her hammer, in fact her acrobatic flip after the stomp is just her hammer vault from Adventure and her glide is her hammer glide. she even has a spin move that makes her dizzy like adventure and P06. Outside of the tarot trap and tarot cycle (two cool abilities) her cards should not just be hammer rekins, because at that point just use her hammer, instead of lazily supplementing it.

At the start of the video and with the title I was like, "Could it be? I actually disagree with him on something?" But then when you got to the Sonic Adventure mechanics as your reasoning I was like, "Oh, well, yeah that makes sense." I've personally been waiting for the 3D games to get that level of fluidity and precision back ever since. And for Sonic, Frontiers is the closest we've gotten to that but yes, there are still some janky aspects to his mechanics. Other than that it was almost a perfect experience for me. I thought having everyone be able to Homing Attack except Tails and forcing him to throw things while in-flight was a weird decision, and definitely think the ratio of Hammer to Cards should be flipped for Amy, but other than that I'm fairly pleased with their movesets. But, yes, they are all still noticeably less smooth to control than a decades-old title. While that part will never make any sense to me (that they can't get the movements right in 3D when they already did the very first time), I am quite happy with my time with the DLC so far. I definitely would've been $20 or so for a season pass with all the updates we've gotten. Also, would've loved more control over Tails' altitude while in air for that extra level of precision. I do agree with all the frustrating and less-logical aspects, but I've gotten through maybe half or more of the update and am still left with a mostly positive experience. Having to climb back up without the purple walls to target was definitely a chore, but I managed somehow lol. The worst parts for me was when you had to boost or hold forward to have a chance at crossing a certain section and had no warning of the sort. Both the towers and Cyberspace levels are way too focused on doing it all in one go. I love how weird and interesting the new cyberspace levels are, but feel awfully discouraged from trying to get all the animals, numbers, and moon rings when one mistake means having to restart everything. If they didn't want to make it too easy to traverse, then maybe a good compromise would've been adding a checkpoint when you do complete one of those tasks. Just respawn at the start of that spot with the numbers or moon rings while having the game recognize you just got them. That'd be a great QoL update. Overall, I've had a fantastic time with all parts of this game, and am sorry to hear you didn't have exactly the same experience. But I do definitely agree that, outside of a free update for post-game content, the other characters need some massive tune-ups to be used in future games. Yes, if they were released like this for a new Adventure-style game, it'd essentially ruin it. Love how the platforming feels like I need to watch my movement again instead of just hold straight or boost, but really need all the characters to be smooth again.

I could look past the perfect parry during the boss rush if we weren't stuck with 400 rings across all 3 fights with no way to recover any between bosses. Being at lvl 1 attack is also annoying since the only worthwhile attack is the sidestep attack for doing the most dps (other than perfect parry, but that's if they feel like attacking you). I'm still stuck on this part and I may just watch the rest of it since it's too frustrating to play.

I personally think of this update as a mixed bag. Amy, Knuckles and Tails are great to play as, and I think the story and execution of the Final boss are a huge redemption of the ending of the base game. However, the Challenges, especially the Towers, are arbitrarily hard, to the point that I had to switch to Easy Mode just to finish Tower 1. There is also no point to doing Cyberspace or Mini Bosses when Beacon Kocos and Gears are everywhere in Cyloop Signs. Ultimately, it is kind of a lesser Expansion to the best 3D Sonic game in years, but worth trying at least once. Also, if I have to hear the same lyrics of Knuckles' overworld theme one more time, I'm gonna lose it.

Honestly, I would’ve felt robbed if I paid for this DLC. I’m glad they just made it free. It feels like more effort was put into the DLC than the base game, but that effort was not used in a good way. I mostly enjoyed the DLC, but the tower trials absolutely sucked. No way those were properly playtested.
@chipputer Жыл бұрын
I was fine with everything up until the tower climbs and the, "you enjoy playing this game on Hard? Here, have a 3 frame parry window on attacks that don't have an obvious hitbox tell." I understand making something difficult for an ending/optional segment but whoever designed the DLC obviously doesn't understand the difference between something being difficult and something being flat out unfair. I also don't care much for how the jankiness of the game affects the characters in the game but I've dealt with jank in my Sonic games for so long that I mostly just expect it. You eventually learn to work around it or force it to work in your favor. Still doesn't change the fact that I got frustrated as Knuckles more than a few times when the game decided to just... not let me climb a wall because I approached it from an angle that it didn't like. The exact same way Sonic happens to randomly fly off of his walls, come to think of it. Someone also needs to tell the people who designed the platforming to remember that some players will approach them with maxed stats because... man. So many problems with the platforming happen because having max speed feels so good for traversal but then it works entirely against the player in platforming.

I have to legitimately ask, because you didn't mentioned at all in here. Did you unlocked the Spindash? Because I loved this update because of the Spindash. It does not break the game at all, but it gives you options on how do you want to solve challenges. For me the Spindash is the MVP of this update and makes the experience really enjoyable. Making my only bad moment with the update the 4th tower and the boss rush. Other than that, I had a blast.
@JaidynReiman Жыл бұрын
I've found the Spindash to not only be completely and totally useless, it actively makes the game _worse_ for me. Because instead of being able to potentially recover if I fall on the tower climbs, I accidentally spindash and fall all the way to the bottom instead. And I never found _any_ use for the spindash otherwise, the boost is just better in every situation.

Been awhile since I last played Frontiers, so I started a new save file. I will give the new dlc a try later, I'm not in a rush. Bummer to hear that it's a hit, and a miss when it comes to control, design, and difficulty. With it being free, is a nice choice, but I do agree maybe it needed more time in the oven. Given how many recent games have been charging more for extra content. Sega made a choice to offer dlc for free throughout Frontiers journey. I give them credit for doing so, it is an ambitious move.

I think my ultimate takeaway from Sonic Frontiers is that it's a good game that could eventually be used as a framework to create a truly great game (ideally with alternate characters that play better than the ones we saw in Last Horizon). Like how Sonic Unleashed was to Colors and eventually Generations, I'm predicting we'll be seeing games in the next decade that iterate on Frontier's formula and rank among the best in the series... until we reach another Forces/06 moment and Sega decides to reinvent the formula yet again...

I liked the DLC but I get the complaints. Most of these "issues" started wit base frontiers & wouldn't blame the update for 90% of it aside from the fact that it really didn't tell u anythin to understand wut you're in for. I didn't have to look anythin up till the final boss but MANY other ppl were hella confused from jump & NOBODY was prepared for that difficulty spike. I don't think the new towers R "bad" HOWERVER there R a few things suroundin them that for many may not make them immediately fun for many. I think the main thing out of all of them is the SLIDERS. THEY NEED TO GO! Part of the reason that base frontiers is so "easy" for many is that it has to account for so many variables in control so it ends up becomin less engagin as a whole. These tower challenges realize this & R thus made for a SPECIFIC control scheme. That bein REALLY TIGHT ESPECIALLY ON DECELERATION. I alr had controls like this so my time may have been "better" than others who had other settins like somethin more akin to Adv. The part were they put those purple things that were never meant to respawn in a challenge that anticipates u doin over & over again through failure without changin those specific ones to actually respawn on their own without a reload was a genuinely "poor" oversight tho. On characters I have my small gripes like the tarot card thing u mentioned however that in particular for prob diff reasons than most. I also thought tails was perfect aside from the missed opportunity to have the tail wip like u mentioned & maybe even the dummy ring bomb(even add in the 1st person aim thig but "better"). I think the startup for Knuckles feels a little weird but I've heard some possible defences for Y it's there. The glidin I thought was fine & while u maybe could argue it could be smoothened out a bit his turnin is probably how it's SUPPOSED to be in a 3D space not only cus it's more realistic but cus that's damn near EXACTLY how he does it in his DEBUT GAME S3&K! It might seem weird at 1st considerin 1 is 2d vs 3d but if u pay attention to both & use your imagination to visualize it it's close. As a whole I thought the characters were the "best" they've played in a 3D space in the series & the only thing that could hold it back significantly is if u didn't alr like the base frontiers handlin. This isn't adv, this is FRONTIERS. Ppl R disappointed cus it's diff from wut we've had ingrained in us for too long. These characters haven't had the chance to be diff so ppl were expectin business as usual when this is a diff gamestyle under a diff team. The trials R fine if u know wut u're doin but many ppl won't know cus the game never says. The boss rush & the parry R (AMONG MANY OTHERS) things ppl wanted that got put in this update that weren't things the base game as rough as it is was meant to handle. Giganto & Knight R "fine" on hard IF U KNO WUT TO DO BUT THEY DON'T TELL U! Wyvern is the only 1 that genuinely "sucks" in this for a MULTITUDE of reasons I don't wanna go through here but lets jus say the parry is both the "best" & "worst" aspect of it all at the same time. The final boss is sick but it misses things from the old endin that I wish were there & makes some significant story changes that ppl may like or dislike. It's a surprisingly free rough update for a rough game that was made in less than a year along wit other updates. 2 VERY IMPORTANT things to note R 1. as Kishimoto said himself this is an EXPERIMENT for the next game & R mostly things WE WANTED that they're testin to better implement into the base of THAT game & seein wut they did add/change from from CS stuff to greater engagement in platformin I'm REALLY excited on a gameplay level at least that the next thing could genuinely wit little to no caveats be on that Unleashed to Gens level if SEGA gives them the time & MANPOWER they need. More importantly than knowin wut ppl want they also now seem to know HOW WE WANT IT for the most part(at least for now). The 2nd thing is it doesn't replace the base game & is off to the side in many ways so u can ignore it. I have other things I could say but as a whole for me this turned a supremely rough 6-7/10 game to a supremely rough 7-8/10 wit all the updates.

That boss rush sucks so bad it's not fun at all. All those cutscenes make it such a drag and made me not want to keep trying. Wyvern alone makes it so unbearable because the attack animations make no sense (just random flailing) and if you miss a single parry then you're dead to the 20 second wait before you can attack again. By the time I got to the final boss I was just so mad I didn't even enjoy it. Plus the fact that trees fill 95% of the screen and you can't see anything/ I don't think the tower climbing was that bad. I had to alter Sonic's controls in the settings though to turn back up the air deceleration and go slowly which isn't very Sonic like though. Most of the ugly new platforming segments weren't as good as the ones in the base game though. The extra characters aren't worth it at all. I thought they were going to be locked to special cyber space stages and have unique controls like adventure, but nah they're all just sonic with a glide. What's the point... Amy's stop is the only fun thing but it's just a less exciting version of the hammer jump. 80% of the new cyber space stages are pretty lame too. I almost skipped all the side challenges because like, who actually wants to slowly carry animals around and pick up numbers in reverse order in a boost game? Update 2 gave me such hope with the Koco platforming, air deceleration change and spin dash, but update 3 was just lame. I honestly wish it was shorter rather than 10 hours of tedious, low effort filler. Not to mention the bugs with music randomly stopping, or being stuck in the boss music. Or when the boss rush would glitch out and send me flying 1000 feet into the air and soft lock. Man

So...I agree that Knuckles is the worst to control. His climbing is super janky and it's impossible to correct or readjust yourself in air with him. I agree that it wasn't a good call to have objects you need to Homing Attack on your way up towers not respawn when you fall down. I think the original bosses weren't designed with perfect parrying in mind, so the timing is off. I also had to switch to Easy specifically for the Wyvern fight. That being said, I still had a blast with this final update. I personally loved the way Amy and especially Tails controlled. I actually thought climbing the towers was kinda fun and it felt super satisfying making it to the top. Aside from the Snake Trial which I had to look up a strategy for, I honestly thought the trials were pretty easy. And again, other than needing to switch to Easy for Wyvern, I thought the Master Koco boss rush was pretty manageable. If I'm being honest, I think a lot of the complaints I've heard about the difficulty are a bit overblown. I don't consider myself some kind of elite pro gamer or whatever, but it really wasn't that bad for me. I personally really enjoyed this update and I think it serves as a much better send off than the original ending.

Overall, I think the criticism for this DLC is very valid and quite constructive. The only thing I disagree with is that Sonic Team should not go back to the whiteboard and start again on all of this. I feel as though they should take this criticism that you and many others have given and try to learn and build from it. Because if they do we could have a very good Sonic game on our hands. Sonic Frontiers is so mixed due to plenty of different reasons but the main ones being the level of jank and unpolish in the game which, if fixed, could make another game like this much better. This is the first time in a long time that it feels like they are trying to be ambitious again and give us a truly memorable experience. The writing is the best it's been in a LONG time, not like it's peak fiction or even remotely close to it, but it feels like a nice story that for once actually tries to (loosely) establish a level of continuity throughout the franchise. There is plenty and I mean PLENTY wrong with Sonic Frontiers, but you don't learn from it by wiping the slate clean and starting over (SEGA especially doesn't need to do this), you take what you got, listen to the community's actual criticisms, and try to build something better using a healthy mixture of the two. Sonic Team NEEDS to learn from their mistakes, not swipe them under the rug. And they've shown little by little that they can, we just need to keep pushing, and videos like these help do that. However...their track record of "learning" from their mistakes isn't good though so we'll just have to see lol.

Hell, this would have been the perfect time to bring back in-game dialogue, have Tails be like "Sonic, the Titan regenerates its health through The End's umbilical cable! Try getting around it's head to attack the plug and knock it loose!" Then once you drain it's health bar Eggman will be like "Now, Sonic! Cyloop the sniper rifle on it's back and toss it over to me! What did you think of the cyber stages? Despite a lot of the mid content in this update, I found the cyber stages to be super fun, especially with all the spindashing opportunities
@amirgarcia547 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, they were easily the best part of the update for me, and unlike the rest of it felt both challenging and fair. Something I wish more of it adhered to.

I enjoyed them as well, except for the collectibles. Sometimes it feels like too much is going on in a level to where that its hard to focus

Sonic Frontiers was literally the second Sonic game I'd ever played, so I was definitely a series outsider. I didn't really have any expectations beyond "Sonic go fast". And I came away thinking it was just OK. I did enjoy it, but it had lots of frustrating flaws and was so very clearly rushed and under-cooked. Ultimately, it gave me no reason to continue playing Sonic games, and I'm really not surprised to hear this DLC is no better than the base game was. Sorry, Sega, but you failed to make a Sonic fan out of me.

Update is great idk why everyone is hating. It is difficult tho.

Honestly, I loved the game, but the update made me hate it, the towers were annoying, the second tower was garbage, the King’s trial just didn’t make any sense and just ruined the Super Sonic fights, and the final boss that was the reason I was excited to get the update just made me… feel nothing, I was so exhausted from the previous things that when I got to the final boss, I was finally happy, but then I thought it, and I hated it instantly, it wanted us to perfect parry again, the same thing that made the previous Super Sonic trial so annoying, and it was difficult, cause you just didn’t know what to do when fighting The End, I didn’t know how to hit the tube, when you have to punch The End and then dodge to get to it, and I just hated that, cause the dodge has never been necessary for any enemy or boss cause you had the parry, and it didn’t make any sense when you could just stomp the head, but it never connects to the tube, and not only that, the boss is just as annoying, if not more annoying than the previous Supreme boss fight, cause it shoots projectiles you HAVE to parry, in a fight where you cannot waste time, cause it pushes you back, and makes you lose rings, and the camera was awful, cause the trees were in the way, and things where you aren’t prepared to parry, the Super Sonic fights were supposed to be spectacles that made you feel invincible, the thing that made the Super Sonic fights loved, but this one had the spectacle, but nothing else, it wasn’t fun, the fight didn’t even seem cool while fighting, and it was just awful, atleast Sonic Unleashed was able to make the spectacle fun while also challenging, while ALSO making sense, sure, Eggman land was hard and we weren’t prepared for it, but it was only one level… not an entire game, I honestly wanna play Sonic Unleashed again, cause I still had fun with Eggman Land… I had FUN in EGGMAN LAND

@@originalname1008The difficulty is the main problem. It's way too high of a spike in challenge and that's not good balancing.

@jeremiahgreen5632 I mean I played it and beat it on hard. It's mot too bad, I think people are overreacting. It's difficult but not in a dark souls way.

One common issue on Switch is that Sonic goes past dash pads and falls of the grind rail. That's because on one frame Sonic is about to hit the dash pad, and the next he's already past it, it won't interact with the pad unless there's a frame in which Sonic's in contact with it. So the Switch's performance actually gets in the way of the game's functionality!

I got to the second tower challenge before giving up and going back to Saints Row. I was very saddened to be leaving Frontiers on that note.

Was my game glitched or something? I played on hard and I could hold the parry button for as long as I wanted and it would always parry

I don't think this video's topic necessitates a full video. It's all a matter of taste. Yes the balance is all over the place, and it's very, very difficult but for people who enjoy the difficulty it's very fun.

I personally had a good experience with the DLC, but I completely understand people who think otherwise. I can see the dedication and effort that the developers put into this update and like what they were attempting, but how it ended up as is very disappointing. This update either needed more time to be properly playtested and polished or it needed a much higher budget to motivate the team to make it more if quality. I’m still looking forward to whatever they have planned in the near future, but they REALLY need to figure some stuff out so something like this doesn’t happen again.
