Tbf, it was more probably the shock of seeing a close friend and former main capo’s wife now giving out samples at the grocery store. Not necessarily having a job in general, but the specific job itself as well as the abrupt fall from grace.

Season Three was when the show went pitch black, what with Ralphie beating Tracee to death, the rape of Melfi, Mustang Sally smashing in Bryan Spatafore's skull, the whacking of Jackie Jr., who was Tony's nephew practically, Junior getting cancer, Tony almost killing psycho Gloria and most shocking of all Meadow getting deflowered by Hasidic Homeboy and film snob Noah Tannenbaum. Season three might just be the best season of them all.

The incidents raised by other posters that happened pre-S4 are all dark, for sure, but this is about characters that we follow episode in, episode out, are coming up against big problems, acting a bit desperately, and we see that now Tony is hiding his cash in the Duck Food, we can surmise that for Tony, there’s no separating his two families, that “separation” was all in his mind, it’s not possible for a gangster to keep those “two worlds” separate. And his family is going to suffer... In the end, Meadow gets defensive about how Italians are “targeted” by the FBI and marries the son of another gangster, after seeming like she’d be the one to “rise above” the gangster life Tony had used to finance her education. She ends up (probably) pregnant, by Jason what’s his name, and arrives just in time to see her father’s brains 🧠 become the latest rage in Finger Food Toppings.

I think the turning point is end of season 3, Junior singing at Jackie Jr funeral, it signifies the end of good times. All of them crying at the beautiful song together, it ends on a happy note in a way. Then like a yr and a half later, first episode after 9/11, episode opens and closes with Time Zone World Destruction and you just feel it, you know things have changed. Visually its a darker show with darker dialogue. I still get chills watching closing scene of Season 4 episode 1 when Chris is at his moms house and puts that $20 bill on the refrigerator and the dollar stares at us with World Destruction playing...perfection. Seasons 1-3 seem innocent if you will, season 4 throws that right out the window. This series truly is a work of art, its a masterpiece. Season 4 - 6 i much prefer to seasons 1-3. Sorry for the long post, just 💓 sopranos!

"A Don doesn't wear shorts." was Carmine's way of expressing displeasure at the fact his underboss and Tony were getting close. We see this play out later when Jonny Sack was helping Tony to undermine Carmine on multiple occasion and the parallel later when Vito being very close to Phil with Phil as acting boss often undermines Tony to give Phil leverage and Tony sees the similarity.

They’re as much a traitor as the fraudulent race-baiting Democrats. And your assessment of our country is a bit broad; the sheep are the ones thinking it’s the Left vs. Right, when in fact it’s those in charge of the political establishment and mainstream institutions vs. ‘we the people’ that keep their system running. As it stands, and correct me if I’m wrong, but the political Left undoubtedly happens to be the ones in charge of that increasingly-undermined system. It isn’t necessarily partisan to call those frauds out and to call it like it is. You should’ve caught that at least, friend. Now, take that however you may like.

On the surface level, Carmella is a "good person." Positive, organized, ambitious, industrious, energetic, active. Cares for her family and friends; involved with the local community and church. But each rewatch, I realize she's less of an angel and more of a complicit devil. Carm and Tone are the best on-screen couple in the history of television. People joke about 9/11 or even downplay its severity because *only* a couple thousand died, but hundreds of millions of people were affected by the fallout. After all, we don't mourn Franz Ferdinand, but we regret WW1 even happening. Sopranos shows how the event affected everyone in the smallest way, and they didn't even deal with the worst of it. I feel as though they included that close-up shot of the 20 dollar bill because it could represent the root cause of all the murder, pain, anguish, drug addictions, suicide attempts, depression, hostility, and misery that befalls the Soprano family and the mafia world. Had they been content with a little house in NJ, and had they not lived outrageously decadent lives that were paved with the deaths of countless victims, then perhaps they would've been happy. The root cause of every single issue is their thirst for greed. Greed and status are the two main reasons for existence for these people. Who has which new car, who has which new title in the mafia. That's all they care about, and the 20 dollar bill represents the fact that it is the overarching reason for all this chaos and is what drives every character to do malicious acts throughout the series. I also found that it could represent, much like in the way The Great Gatsby used the eyes of Dr. Eckleburg as a way to say that God looks down on a world full of decay and rot, lacking meaning or any values, money, i.e the mafias god, looks down upon them and is ashamed at what they have done to society. It's like they are being judged by the way they have gained that 20 dollar bill. The 20 dollar bill could represent a version of an economic god who is embarrassed by the way these people have besmirched the capitalistic system in America by tweaking rules and corrupting the morality of countless people

You missed on one crucial thing: The foundation for the deterioration of the relationship between Tony and Chris is being laid in this episode. The guy getting killed by Chris tells him that he didn't even knew his father and that he's being bullshitted by the guy who told him otherwise (Tony). Chris gets tears in his eyes, because he knows it's the truth. From this episode on it's just mayhem with Tony and Chris.

I like how you mentioned the very ideas of working terrifies Carmela bc in a video analysis I mentioned something that pointed towards her laziness and parasitic nature as well when it comes to latching on to a man with money, just as with the divorce when she and the other wives are having their little movie connoisseur night and Carm mentions all happy and satisfied with her self that she can swipe half of Tony's money that he worked for; that kinda shitty attitude/actions rubs me the wrong way because it's just so grimy and it shows the people how much of a leech Carmella is and if you think about it at a bare bones level, how useless she is. She has no money, she contributes nothing, she spends and wastes way more than she produces, and she's afraid of just _thinking_ about working and providing anything, which why she is _really_ afraid of Tony getting killed or locked up like you said...she doesn't give a shit about him, and really, I think when it came to the living trust, she is more concerned about her having to work than she is about the kids too, yet she tries to make tony think that it's all about his well being that she cares about and then it's the well being of the kids, and then the scene where she starts literally crying over it ..she wasn't crying because tony thinks the things she sees as important as boring or bc she was sad at the idea of Tony going away or being murdered, she was crying partiallly bc she's probably realizing tony isn't giving in and partially bc she's trying to get her way....but yeah, that is why I think of her as one of my least favorite characters in the show .. PLUS she stole 40 grand outta the bird feeda! She never made that right with Tony; it wasn't right then and it isn't right now.

The scene with chris and his mom in the kitchen where they're talking about his dad shows exactly where he got his passive aggressive behavior and backhanded condescending approach to interpersonal disputes from, just listen to the way she asks him "did i saddle you with a stepfather?". She doesn't ask him in a calm respectful way like a mother would talk to an adult son who is trying to have a conversation with her about a sensitive family topic, she initially becomes really passive aggressive when he asks her if she missed him then gets mad when he doesn't respond to it and goes right into talking at him like he's a 10 year old boy who needs to be put in his place for talking out of turn about something she doesn't want to talk about. It's a classic form of emotional/psychological abuse that almost certainly went on from the time he was a child and its probably why chris could never have a healthy relationship with anyone (including Tony and Adriane) when he became an adult.

I believe the part about real mob bosses or capos not wearing shorts. Shorts are casual whereas dress pants, khakis, or even just jeans convey a more serious, all business attitude. I also find it funny that the spent shell casing on the Many Saints of Newark poster is a .243 which is a rifle round. They couldn’t have gotten a 9mm or .38 special?

I think when the scene after Christopher shoot the heroin the scene cuts to Tony enjoying an ice cream sundae which to me depicts how much of a treat heroin is 2 Christopher as both the ice cream as well as Christopher Melt Away. Depicting how much Chrissy enjoyed heroin. ( stating once how much the spike wets his whistle) The scene insinuates that Christopher and Tony have two different ideas of what a treat is

There's photos from FBI surveillance that shows Philadelphia mobsters wearing shorts. Anthony Provenzano or "Tony Pro", the same Tony Pro form "The Irishman" was also photographed wearing shorts and that was long before the Sopranos was ever on television. As far as cookouts are concerned. Michael Franchesse from the Columbo Crime family said that mobsters and bosses wore shorts at cookouts during the NYC summer days. There's also a photo of Micheal's father, Sonny, wearing shorts at the beach with his wife. I think the mobster was having a laugh with Chase.
