@acooknamed_Rishi I originally watched sopranos on a shitty TV. Easy to miss unless you knew she'd die or were really focusing on her hair, with all the scene switches it's kinda easy to get lost in the detail. I remember thinking there was something off about it though. When I re-watched it on my computer years later I could notice stuff like the texture and lighting being off.

I'm surprised people didn't notice? Her hair changes between every shot. Look at the part in her hair, it changes. And the KZbinr is too harsh on the CGI. This was back in 2001/02 (literally 20 years ago). He's acting like the CGI technology should be on a 2022 level. I hate when millennials and Zoomers expect older things to be fresh like what they're used to.

I feel like Livia's death allowed her to become a more tormenting figure to Tony in his psyche than if she carried on. Now he'd forever have doubts as to her intentions and questions left unanswered as to her true feelings, and a source of misery in his life he'll never come to terms with. In the final episode with the new psychiatrist he's still harping on about his mother.

It would’ve definitely been tense. Livia playing up the senile angle to toy around with the defence (and by extension Tony) would’ve had me gritting my teeth. I imagine her mind games would backfire, with the judge dismissing her as an unfit witness and Tony locking her up in a state home. That would’ve been a far more satisfying end to this monster of a woman.

I think David Chase left a shadow of a doubt that Livia actually wanted Tony dead. She may have, but she may also have had a bit of dementia. Likewise, later on, we really don't know if Uncle Junior had really lost his marbles, or was he playing for an insanity defense in his upcoming RICO trial. Chase is a genius in subtly letting the viewer make up his/her own mind on things, as he famously did in the final scene. On the other hand, Junior absolutely wanted Tony dead in the early going, so he used Livia to sort of validate his thoughts.
@KC______
@KC______ 3 жыл бұрын
But in the last season after Tony was shot and Junior was in the psych hospital, Junior shows signs more and more of having some sort of mental disorder. After the Asian kid attacks and injuries Junior it seems like Junior has become seriously incapacitated. Iirc Junior is pretty much written out of the show and never seen again.
@Mainlyeverything

Livia was faking dementia in season 1. Lol she pretend to not know who meadow was so tony didn't think her and junior were in it together Livia probably wanted tony dead for a second but was just using it to manipulate junior Junior definitely had dementia by the end because the show set up all the potential endings for tony End up dead like Phil. Or go to prison due to carlo being a rat. Ending up line junior, all alone with no family to visit. Or end up like paulie, alive but no one actually there for him. All a big nothing

For me, Livia did want her son dead. The reason that made me sure of it was the scene where Livia and Junior is watching the news of Tony surviving the attack. When Junior asks Livia what really going on, Livia says that Tony was attacked and managed to "get away". The choice of words she used, (i.e: escape) proves that she really wanted him dead. She could've used the words, "survived" or "fought off" etc. But she said "GOT AWAY", which points out that he wasn't supposed to escape, that he was supposed to die in that hit. Anyway, this my opinion though. I could be wrong.

I think they actually redid the CGI of Livia, but I'm not sure. I remember it being extremely bad and almost creepy with this blurred floating head effect the first time I saw it. But watching it later it didn't seem nearly as bad, but still bad for sure. They did several reshoots of scenes cause an actor left or David didn't like the way it aired so there's actually several things that are different from the original airing and the DVDs and reruns. Which is wild cause they swapped out several characters and didn't change anything (Tony's sister is a big one, Dr. Fried I think is another, Joe Gannascoli playing at least 2 different characters as did several other actors, etc,) but when Fairuza Balk backed out of playing the undercover fed that Adrianna gets caught up with they had the scenes she did reshot lol Apparently there's more but I don't know and can't remember many right now. Just speaks to the attention to detail and where they places emphasis. Either way, it was a huge loss. RIP Nancy Marchand. David Chase said they'd initially written her out at the end of season 1 with either Tony smothering her or her not surviving her stroke (I can't remember what his version was exactly) but that she asked him to keep her working til she died and he obliged. She was great. Such a hateable character which says a lot cause everyone that knew her said it couldn't have been further from who she actually was as a person.

Agreed about the weakness of the CGI. It stunned me as I watched it for the first time. It was likely an idea made by emotion, the feelings Chase & Co. had for Nancy Marchand. When we make decisions based on emotion, they are often not our best. Having said that, don't we think this was likely the best CGI available at that time or was $250K a cheap out?
@owenmb984
@owenmb984 Жыл бұрын
There was definitely better CGI at the time. Look at sci-fi or fantasy films from that time like the matrix or lord of the rings. But that would have been a lot more expensive and time consuming to include. Also for lots of people watching on shitty TVs the CGI wasn't that noticeable

Interesting that Tony has his panic attack after seeing a package of Uncle Ben rice. Chase is such a good writer, that nothing unfolds by accident. Does Uncle Ben symbolize something about Tony's racial bigotry? And yeah, what a shame about that dated CGI- worst moment in the Soprano's series. And yet still overall a great episode.

Tony is not a racist. He is just protecting his family. The Soprano's are from Newark for Pete's sake. Their entire family was ethnically cleansed out of Newark by black people. Wow, what, do you not know what happened to the French settlers in Haiti. Or the white farmers in Africa who had their kids shot by black troops to drive them off their farms. Or all the white families in the US who were ethnically cleansed out of whole cities like Detroit and black people are living in their houses and churches, and businesses that they lost and their whole family was uprooted and scattered to the wind. When you say stuff like that. It makes you sound incredibly naive.

I always felt the way Ralph was introduced on this show was weird and out of nowhere considering the fact that up until this episode he's never been seen before and he's immediately being treated as all important and pushed to the forefront. I've often wondered if it had anything to do with Nancy Marchand's death since it's been pretty well established that that kind of threw a monkey wrench into David Chase's plans for this season and possibly the remainder of the series as well.

Aida Turturro really brought Janice to life. You can see how Janice's upbringing fucked her up, hence, her sense of entitlement (to her mother's money, to Tony's money and status). She grew up thinking she was Johnny Boy's favorite, thinking she was a mafia princess. She hates the fact that she has to beg or work or be under someone else's thumb when she previously got away with shit just because she was Johnny Boy's daughter. Aida played her splendidly. Props to the writers who built a character like Janice.

This is one of my favorite Sopranos episodes. I don't think the Livia scene was really CGI (Maybe they composited her head on a stand in's body in a seated position for a few seconds) But it was mostly just old school editing mish mash of old clips and a stand in for Livia's back side. Notice how her hair kept changing. It was almost as bad as Ed Wood trying to resurrect Bela Legosi. I'm surprised they didn't try to bring in some recorded lines from deleted scenes as I think all of them were used in previous episodes but maybe they just couldn't find any that fit.

The worst part about the Livia scene for me is not the CGI but rather the disjointed nature of the conversation. The way they use exact lines from the exact takes that aired in previous episodes is so distracting, especially if you're binging the show. Maybe the showrunners in the 90s didn't think that people would ever watch episodes back to back to back and so wouldn't notice repeated dialogue. Then again, VHS and DVD releases of the show existed back in the day, no? Perhaps it would have been better if there were deleted scenes or alternate takes of Nancy they could have pulled from so that it's not repeated dialogue. Definitely one of the very few missteps of the show's run but an enormous one at that just because of how bad it is.

@@DrJ-hx7wv Psychologically, fear and hate are two sides of the same coin man.. and as Dr Melfi tells Tony in season 5, depression, (and by extension panic attacks) is rage, (hate) turned inward. So yeh I'm sure all those worries contributed massively to Tony fainting! But my point was that he has a major panic attack right after his racist outburst, which imo cleverly describes how that kind of thing is bound to happen when you live with so much hate/fear and habitually direct it at other, (in this case innocent) people. Therefore the incident with Noah is perhaps just the tipping point, and caused him to short circuit. That's the way I interpreted it anyway. Peace 🙏
