Season 1 is such a great debut season, and this is a great finale and one of the show’s best episodes. This season is probably the most conventionally entertaining and even cliche. But it’s so well acted, the dialogue is so great, and the show is almost fully realized. This season isn’t as ambitious or challenging as others, but seasons 6b and 5 are the only ones I’m willing to say are “better” than this one. But of course, all the seasons are special in their own ways.

Season 2 is full of a lot of great moments and many good to great episodes. It’s more consistent than the first, and it ends with two of the show’s best episodes. But it’s also incredibly scattered, is a bit too dependent on season 1’s momentum and doesn’t feature enough Carm. But really, seasons one and two almost feel like one season. They’re very different to the remainder of the series.

The only good part of this economic disaster called CV-19 was having the time to rewatch the entire six season of the show, thats Season one, episode one, titled "The Sopranos" 01/10/99 too Season six, episode eighty six, titled "Made In America" 06/10/07.... And I happily admit, rewatching the Sopranos now from a 50 year old mindset compared to the mindset of a 20 something year old, I much more love the Sopranos now. In other words, some episodes like Tony in a coma Or Tony dream sequences were boring to me 22 years ago. I use to want to see bullets flying, Or watching Mikey Palmice laying on his back, in a puddle of water begging for his life. Now with all the great content like "Pure Kino" on YT and rewatching of the show, I appreciate it all of it!! from AJ growing up after losing his innocents at Jackie Aprile funeral realizing what Meadow told him about there dad having two families as the FBI is taking pictures of them while burying Uncle Jackie, to sadly watching them all fall from grace.... In ending, The Sopranos to me is like that old saying "Like a fine wine, It only gets better with age" Because every time I see a episode, I catch something I didn't see the first or last time I saw it..

It's amazing having grown up in an Italian-American household the connection between food this action is, was very real. The scenes with Carmela and the priest and the food and how another woman feeding the priest was almost an act of adultery makes sense for someone of that generation. And then the end of the episode where they all wind up at Artie bucco's restaurant in bad weather eating by candlelight is something of my youth. It's apart of Familia Karma connection, love. As good as the food is its eating together, it's the person that serves of food it's the people that eat the food it's the kids listening to stories during Camille that make it enduring. God I miss James Gandolfini. I can't imagine the movie coming out, post 2017 coming close to wiping The Sopranos ass. I hope I'm wrong but it's been a good 10 years Plus. A lot of shit has happened and a lot of things we used to hold dear to us no longer exist. I think the movie is still too new to be a period piece. I don't want to watch a bunch of Italian guys just saying forget about it back in the late sixties. I'd rather watch The Godfather 3:-) excellent review of this episode and the entire first season well done!

@dingdongism
@dingdongism 3 жыл бұрын
@@HandGrenadeDivision I'm not sure you even understand what you're arguing. I never spoke _for_ the Church. In fact, of the two of us, you're the only one that speculated on how the Church sees this scenario. It's right up there in the comments, where you wrote "I bet the church doesn't see a difference either." I know that you didn't like having your equivocation around Father Phil and Carm called out, but you're doing a terrible job explaining your position. I'm saying that Father Phil was predatory and, as a member of the clergy, ought to be held to a higher standard. I don't care about the Church's official position, I'm saying that you, me, other viewers, and other citizens ought to hold him to the standard that he claims to represent in the world. Carm never signed up to give her life to the Church. Whether or not her actions constitute some sort of sin or not is not relevant to my argument. It's a clear-cut power relation with Father Phil holding a position of cultural and religious power and so he should be held to a higher standard. Period. The fact that you're equivocating on the Father Phil and Carm relationship and trying to lend credibility to your argument by speculating that the Church agrees with you, and at the same time pretend that I'm the one "speaking for the Church," is either a huge oversight on your part or evidence of you arguing in bad faith.

Tony evolved during the series because he was realizing he was losing it all. By the final season he knew he was a marked man and probably a dead man walking. There was nothing left of his crew because they were all dead or would be. Most of the deaths were because of Tony's own stupid decisions and he only had himself to blame.

my memory is that Chase originally meant for it to run 4 seasons and center on the war between Tony and Livia. When Nancy M died, the show had no certain trajectory for season 3, except maybe that Tony’s issues w Livia would return in the form of other women in his life (Gloria). Then, somewhere in the writing of season 4, David Chase realized he was inescapably glorifying crime and amorality. His plan for 4, 5, 6a and 6b was to systematically dismantle audience sympathy for Tony as much as he possibly could without making it obvious.

@@dingdongism It was something from an dvd commentary from a while back... early 2000s, before the entire series ended. (edit) YES, from Chase. The series wasn't over at the time, so the inclusion of all seasons is technically my assumption based on his words. He was really bothered by the prospect of glorifying crime at that time. Seems like it was during the break between seasons 4 and 5; or 5 and 6. Not sure. I was watching the show through pirated Russian dvds borrowed from a friend. @@iheartjbgccb I think it was both, and that was the really genius side of the character: acting as a double-faced asshole looks like the same to have dementia. It is the ultimate statement about characters which only use in a story is to plot with no real meaning behind it, as Livia is the only character how just seems to be in a certain way with no particular reason and results as the only straightforward villain (the presumed lacks of respect Tony inflicts her aren't enough to justify her hatred if she was a normal human being.) She's a meta-character in a series full of meta hints, showing how most of unnecessarily good or evil TV characters act like demented zombies if you really analyze their behaviour. Plot-wise, she probably just exaggerates her feelings because of dementia and actually takes advantage of the status they give her in the moments of lucidity dementia can give you time to time.

There's no reprisal because A. Tony himself knows he was responsible for the restaurant fire and B. Artie actually believes Tony's denials. He also doesn't shoot Tony even though Tony encourages him to do so when saying he 'doesn't give fuck anymore'. Deep down Tony was always guilty about the restaurant fire and hence always trying to protect and help Artie.

I love all the ambiguity around the pillow scene later on. Tony kind of remembers it different and the rumors are all over. I also like how the ending reverberates in the final episode where the tony quote of "Remember the good times" comes back to AJ before he gets shot.

Not sure Artie is Tony’s best friend.. he later sees Artie as a mark and talks him into borrowing money from him, only to not pay his restaurant debt.. Tony may like Artie for sure but ultimately it’s his food he likes.. Tony always finds a way to serve his interests
@sundjatamb3061

Nah. If you remember the dream with his football coach, the coach thought Artie was gonna be the one to lead Tony down the path he ultimately took. Artie was a flawed person, and cowardly in some ways, but he had balls in other ways that are meant to drive home the point. None of Tony's underlings except Chris could have got away with half the shit that Artie did with Tony, and definitely no civilian (he pulled a gun on Tony, remember? Only Chris did that, and was damn near executed). Plus if Charmaine is to be believed, she had a brief relationship with Tone, but decided it wasn't for her. IMO the Buccos represent status quo discontent with things we should be thankful for, and the destructive allure of organized crime when somehow those things still make us unhappy. Artie's a successful restaurateur, but he's never satisfied with his degree of success, and desires the power and money and casual sex that come with being a gangster. He has a beautiful wife, who is caring and wise, and lusted after by "the guys" in ways we never see with the mob wives. But she's presented to the audience as a ball-busting harpy who is less desirable than the series of scammers that Artie employs, and whom "the guys" would see right through. Artie, and Charmaine, are much more interesting characters than their position on the food chain suggests.

I still haven't figured out just how predatory Tony was being with the $50,000 loan to Artie. If you recall, he was drunk and still reeling from Gloria's death when he insisted that Artie take his loan. It seemed to me that he just wanted to feel good about himself, and give himself a reason to believe that he does help those around him. Maybe subconsciously he realised that he could recoup the debt whatever happened, and wipe his $6,000 tab to boot, but I can't see that it was as wicked and sinister as Artie thought.
@sundjatamb3061
@sundjatamb3061 3 жыл бұрын
@@joshradcliffe8563 true, but also, I think he was trying to prove to himself that what he does is not as toxic as Gloria's death suggested. A losing argument, as it turns out; Tony manipulates literally everybody in his life. Artie being his best (and maybe his only real) friend, he probably felt genuinely hurt that Artie didn't come to him about it--but mainly because of what that said about his lifestyle, since Tony's a severe narcissist. The tab was always gonna go unpaid, and Art was being a dumbass with this young cooz; so on some level he might have felt like if shit went left, it wouldn't destroy their relationship, only clarify one aspect of it...and maybe Artie would learn the hard way about his mid-life crisis decisions. A really manipulative and complicated POV, actually sociopathic. But it does map onto his general pattern with Art, going back to blowing up Vesuvio's in order to "help" him.

Shes manipulative, judgmental and uses guilt to get the things she wants but I don't think every action was motive driven. For me, the fact that it's up for a sort of debate is what makes it so great

When Christopher runs out during the “Tony tells the guys about therapy scene”, I thought that was kind of supposed to represent him running off to therapy, bc he is depressed during the 1st season and Tony tries to talk to him about therapy but Chris sees it as not an option, Tony coming clean about it shows that it is okay, and you won’t be judged. I’m pretty sure Christopher even says right before he leaves “So it’s kind of like marriage counseling?” and then just dips. Probably a completely wrong theory, but that was just what I took from watching the season finale

A couple things I caught while watching this: When Tony shoots Chucks, the word “villain” is displayed as he’s getting killed. Don’t know if there’s any connection but they’re the villains to Tony. When they’re going after Mikey, notice that Mikey died in water, same as Brendon Felone. A possible connection, both dying while in water. Finally, when they get to Vesuvio, Paulie and Silvio are having dinner. Paulie, Silvio, and Tony were all responsible for the deaths of Juniors guys and that rat Jimmy.

As someone who has seen the entire series, I gotta say I tend to agree with you. When PK warns about spoilers on the intro screen, the obvious assumption from the viewer is that the spoilers will be about the episode he is about to summarize. Having important details spoiled for the entire series is an entirely different thing to do and in my opinion should be more strongly emphasized by the creator at the front of each video.

Terminator Jug head is trying again to get the Artie to pursue the belief that there's something messed up between Tony and the restaurant fire, i mean what is his angle here, Artie new boss of the North Shore, as much wine, Emma Thompson and baked Zetti as he likes.
