W. E. B. Du Bois' collection of brilliant socio-economic / political essays, 🗽🙏🏿“The Souls of Black Folk”, remains a seminal work in American literature. 🇺🇸 His 1935 magnum opus, “Black Reconstruction in America”, challenged the prevailing orthodoxy that Blacks were responsible for the failures of Reconstruction post American Civil War.
Borrowing a phrase from the great Frederick Douglass, Du Bois popularized use of the term “color line” to represent the injustice of the “separate but equal”. This doctrine was still prevalent in many parts of American social and political life, particularly the Deep South. He opens “The Souls of Black Folk” with the central thesis of much of his life's work: "The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line." Incredibly, The United States' Civil Rights Act was enacted a year after his death - a testament to Du Bois’ powerful leadership and visionary work towards equality, freedom, and social justice. 🗽 🙏🏿 THE SOULS OF BLACK FOLK by W.E.B. More about the author:
William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (February 23, 1868 - August 27, 1963) was a sociologist, historian, American civil rights leader, Pan-Africanist, author, and editor. Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Du Bois grew up in a relatively tolerant and integrated community, and after completing graduate work at the University of Berlin and Harvard, where he was the first African American to earn a doctorate, he became a professor of history, sociology and economics at Atlanta University. Du Bois was one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909.
Du Bois had risen to national prominence as the leader of the Niagara Movement, a group of African-American activists who wanted equal rights for blacks. Du Bois insisted on full civil rights and increased political representation, which he believed would be brought about by the African-American intellectual elite.
Du Bois strongly protested against lynching, Jim Crow laws, and discrimination in education and employment. His cause included people of color everywhere, particularly Africans and Asians in colonies.

Haitians in America appreciate the acts of Du Bois! We share the struggle the same and of deep understanding! Appreciation for the writing for the race of catching up and putting and end to racism, slavery and disparity is still the salvation of many still today!!!

I have a greater appreciation for those blacks and whites who paved the way so that there would be equality for the black race here in America. And the next time I go on the grounds of Fisk University, I will thank God for those blacks who saw the importance of establishing black schools and educating themselves and future generations after them. This book is so amazing to me because I live in the South and those areas that Du Bois mentions are areas and places that I see all the time but now I will look at those areas with a greater appreciation that they are still standing and flourishing and that the work that was done by those coming out of slavery was not in vain.

I’m a children’s and young adult short story writer. The following might be of interest to you and your subscribers. ~ ELOISE, EDNA & THE CHICKEN COOP “based on a true story as told by Rev Howard Thurman” ~~ There was once a Black woman named Eloise who when her grandmother passed away, inherited a parcel of land in the suburbs of Compton California at a time when there was strong racial prejudice against woman of color-especially those black woman who owned property in predominately white neighborhoods. It just so happened there lived adjacent to Eloise’s land a white woman named Edna who did not like the fact that this Black woman owned land next to hers. Eloise would try to be friendly because she believed Jesus when He said “Love Thy Neighbor” and to Eloise that meant even if your neighbor was unfriendly. But whenever Eloise saw Edna, Edna would turned her back in disdain. In fact, ever since her husband died a decade ago, Edna became arrogant and mean to almost everyone in the neighborhood. But to Eloise, she was so hateful and full of animosity that one night when all the lights in Eloise home were off Edna went to her own backyard where she kept and maintained her chicken coop and gathered up all the manure and dumped it on Eloise land and upon her tomatoes and her greens and everything she was growing, in an attempt to destroy it. And when Eloise realized there was all this manure, she decided to rake and mix it in with the soil and use it as fertilizer. Almost every night Edna would dump the manure from her chicken coop litter box and Eloise would get up the next morning and turn it over and mix it. This went on for months until one morning Eloise noticed there was no manure in her yard. And no manure for the next 5 or 6 days. And Eloise realized she hadn’t seen Edna in over a week. Then one of Eloise neighbors informed her that she heard Edna had fallen ill. But because Edna was so mean and unfriendly , no one came to see her when she was sick. But when Eloise heard about Edna’s condition she picked the best flowers from her garden, walked to Edna’s house , knocked on her front door and heard this frail voice and when Edna opened the door she was in complete shock that this Black Woman who she had been so cruel to, would be the only neighbor to come and see her and bring flowers. Edna was so deeply moved by Eloise kindness. Then Eloise handed the flowers to Edna who said, “These are the most beautiful flowers I’ve ever seen! Where’d you get them?” Eloise said, “You helped me make them, because when you were dumping in my yard, I decided to plant some roses and use your manure as fertilizer.“ Teas flooded Edna’s eyes. This genuine act of kindness opened the floodgate of Edna’s heart that had been closed for so long-ever since her husband’s passing. “ You’ve changed my life,” Edna told Eloise. “Please visit as often as you like and when I’m feeling better, I would love to have you over for tea.” “ Thank you, “ Edna replied , assuring her she would come. And then added “ I will pray for your speedy recovery every night” And with those words Eloise departed. It’s amazing what can blossom from manure. There are some who allow the manure and life’s tribulations to fall on them and do nothing. Or seek revenge. But then there are others-like Eloise -who just “turn the other cheek” when abused or in this case turn over the soil to make something new like those bevy of beautiful red roses that opened a white woman’s heart. -Al Fogel
