In the beginning of the film, the Captain was so stern and cold. Here he’s like an awkward schoolboy, feeling and expressing true, raw vulnerability. Christopher Plummer brilliantly performs this character’s evolution as the story unfolds.

In the German-language movie about the Trapp family, made a few years before The Sound of Music debuted as a stage play, the proposal scene also combines tenderness with a little awkwardness as the two unexpected lovers come to terms with their feelings.

The filmmaking contrasts between this scene and Liesel and Rolf's kiss in the gazebo are flawless. Rolf's sudden and forceful kiss, that Liesel didn't have time to react to, followed immediately with him running off, compared to this slow, gentle contact, immediately followed with reassurance, affirmation and affection. It shows their maturity and mutual respect, and the stability of their love, as still new as it is.

I've always loved this scene. I like the way the Captain gently urges Maria to sit, hoping to put her at ease, while simultaneously becoming a bundle of nerves himself as he tries to gauge the situation and confirm whether she feels the same way he does. Maria still thinks he's with the Baroness, but you can see the tiny glimmer of hope there --- a bit of tender vulnerability --- as he asks her why she came back. And the way he turns toward her before pulling her in for the kiss --- swoon!

There was a 6-year difference in the ages of Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews. Christopher was born in 1929, and Julie in 1935. He was 36 and she was 30 when The Sound of Music was released in 1965. The real-life Georg and Maria von Trapp were about 25 years apart in age. I was 18 years old when I saw the movie for the first time. At that young age I was not particularly engrossed in the slowly simmerming love between Georg and Maria, because all I could see in Georg was a cranky "old guy" twice my age. Thank goodness time stood still for this story, and now here I am tonight trying to catch my breath after that gorgeous, vulnerable man said ... "Maria".

This is the first film I ever saw in a theater. I was 6 years old. I remember asking my mom why she cried after " Climb Every Mountain." I now cry in the same places she did and usually a couple other places. I believe this is possibly the finest, most perfect movie moment ever shot/edited. When he starts the line " you can't marry someone when you're ........" then the camera zooms to just there two faces and he turns and says " in love with someone else." That single moment should have received an Oscar of its own. Add the amazing musical scoring and the lighting and it's just pure perfection.

This is the second upload of this scene I’m commenting on. Even though Julie is the reason i discovered this movie in the 2000’s, one reason I come back to it once in a while is the love story between Maria and the Captain. I like how before the first kiss, the captain tries to subtly make his feelings known. Throughout the story, he is straight laced, serious and never easily intimidated. But once he realized his feelings for Maria never went away, he became jittery like a school boy fidgeting with his hands. He tries to casually ask Maria why she left and why she came back. When she says that she missed the children, he asks “JUST the children?” Even when he stumbles with his words, he finally tells her that he and the baroness are no more. He then professes his love plain and simple when Maria affirms that she knows her real destiny at the villa. Normally, I’m not crazy about romantic scenes in movies, but this one is so lovely and tastefully done that I have to keep coming back to watch
