I half to comment, never do,I’m 68 so I never really contributed to the comment community. But I was privileged to see this band in their prime. It was the East Side Club in Philadelphia. One of thier four east coast gigs. It was amazing show, stoic but with an energy that just mesmerized everyone. I wa# there to see the Sound ,already owned their 2 releases, so seeing then live was a moment I will smile upon always, every time.

One of my favorite releases from The Sound. It’s perfect in length and features some of the most sincere lyrics Adrian ever penned. For a man whose forte was emotional honesty and intensity, the melancholic beauty of this EP is its heart. I think at times it’s hard to discuss a figure like Adrian who passed under such tragic circumstances without characterizing him as a one dimensional artist. There’s a bias towards the somber and morose, which is understandable. Adrian was both of those things a lot of the time, and then some. This EP however puts on full display what makes his work so special. Under all the sadness is a fragile beauty and optimism. Emphasis on hope, agency, themes of contrast and duality are found all over his work. Longest Days for example is wonderfully made. There’s a clear melancholy from the start, but once his voice cuts through that production with a weary gentleness, it’s beautiful. While not necessarily a concept album I think the structure is important to note too. Golden Soldiers starts the record with an almost manic energy, explained by his condition of Schizoaffective Bipolar type of course. The next two tracks are less intense and hold a lot more romanticism in them. They’re forward facing, waiting for better days to come. Winter is the darkest song on the record. It paints a desolate and haunting landscape. The days become so unbearable that a desire to just sleep through them is born. The icy cold of winter takes the life out of life itself. A New Way Of Life features the same cautious optimism found elsewhere, but now it’s closer to being embraced. Dreams Then Plans comes out of the nocturnal gloom of depression and now demonstrates a real vitality. Healing from the pain, replacing it with flesh and color. Imagery is key too. The cover shows a bright flash of sunlight through a window flanked on both sides by heavy blackout curtains. Positioned in the center, the darkness that at one time wrapped over the opening now falls to the radiance at the heart of the image. There’s an inherent strength and kindness in the human spirit and I think Adrian knew that. By the time the record ends, the person has healed. Darkness might color their past, but it doesn’t have to also define their future. The curtains are drawn open and they step out into the sun, willing to give life another try. Feeling returns, and they finally find their happiness at the end. “A love of life A love of life in my eyes” Miss you buddy! RIP Adrian ✝️

Nice review. It's my 2nd favourite album from them (yup, behind FTLM😊), which means one of my favourite all time albums. It's a shame they didn't add 2 song to give it a true album status. Somehow (and often unfairly) EPs are often viewed as a 2nd rate product. Winter is my favourite song from this album. I can relate to your perception of the song. Hearing this song I can visualise winter in its bleakest harsh cold way. Actually for the rest I think their most upbeat album.

I loved this EP in the 80s and still play it often. It's one of those records that you have to play loud, alone and without interruption. Totally absorbing. What a loss, such a talented musician singer songwriter Adrian was.

It's strange, I wonder if these artists lost too early were destined to end that way, and if they'd have been what they were if they'd have had long lives. That said, I see Anton Newcombe as someone who could've easily been lost early, yet he is still rocking.

This was the first thing I ever found by The Sound and it turned them into my favorite band to this day. Everyone says From The Lions Mouth is their best album and it is amazing but I think this EP gives it a real run for it's money. Of course I think all of the albums do. But this still is my personal favorite i think and tha that is saying a lot.

With "Counting The Days" Borland wrote the best song The Cure could have wished to have ever written. For a long time i considered Disintegration as one of the best albums recorded. As an album it is closer to perfection than most of the albums Borland particpated on but i can't help but want to put on a The Sound/Borland album when listening to anything 80's UK postpunk. The endless need for comparions bore me but i don't need to listen to Morrissey's voice when i can listen to the one of Borland. He's the most gifted frontman of his generation.

@@mihaivrabies2977 Words can't describe the emotional power and energy that Totall Recall brings forth. That song is unlike anything else and there is a reason why I struggle to listen to it sometimes, from avoiding crying. I can listen to that song and not get tired, but just like any song it's better if it's not overly listened to so you can appreciate it more. Like a novelty.

I've heard a lot of people wonder why they were never as popular as they should have been. This may be an over simplification but I believe the reason they never received any great acclaim nor a radio hit might be because marketability in this shallow, superficial society is based on looks and charisma. So sad but true. It's just how things work in this world and it's really so unfortunate for great artists like my two favorite bands The Sound and The Chameleons. But that's ok because they will still live on forever in the hearts and minds of all true music lovers.
