Election means "will of people". The reason why Justices are not elected for the reason they don't follow the will of people but they do the objective and independent interpretation of the law regardless of people's opinion. In US during 1980s until 2003, the majority persecuted LGBT people through anti sodomy and other discriminatory laws. LGBT people cannot protect themselves for the reasons majority controlled the Congress. So, the US Supreme Court struck down anti gay laws because it's against the Constitution.

Justice Leonen is from the academe side, having been the Dean of no less than the UP College of Law and the chief negotiator in the Bangsamoro thing. He knows the nitty gritty of the theories and principles. Look at his decisions - very well thought and crafted.
