The fixed stock classic AK74 and AK74N was a staple of the soviet fighting force. For years, this was the bog-standard weapon that was used throughout the Soviet Union, and the old way of thinking about the AK74 was that it's not very accurate... but is that really the case?
Interestingly, the wood-stocked AK74 has found itself in the tragic battlefields in Ukraine on both sides. This is the soviet icon that will not die, a classic symbol of the Soviet style of simplistic weapon systems that will likely stick around for generations to come.

*error on my part, those are 60gr non-magnetic rounds* Also this is a Bulgarian ISD rifle with the original military Bulgarian barrel... but there's more... since it was a bulgarian ISD build, they take military rifles, saw up the receivers and build them in bulgaria right next to the (10) factory on their own receivers. after running the rifle for a while, we realized that the ISD receiver was crooked... as we looked into it more, we saw the ejector was peening. Bottom line the Bulgarian ISD made receiver was poorly heat treated and soft, so with the help of Brandon Hererra and his lead gunsmith Zack, we had the parts transferred to a U.S. clone receiver, and now it works well with no heat treat issues. Basically it started as parts kit (with barrel) build from Bulgaria and now it's the same but without soft receiver issues. Hope you guys liked us re-treading old grounds! We've got quite a few "redemption" runs: - M4A1 + ACOG - this time with an actual Colt 6921 and a real USMC RCO (TA31 ACOG) - K2, but this time with decent ammo - AK Niner Mk3 - with the SAG upgrade and better optics We've already published: - M21 Also yes, we are working on the OEM bone stock AK105 before we rice that out into a spetsnaz AK105

I'm seriously interested in how you like that TA31 ACOG. I used irons as a soldier at the tail end of the cold war, but my brother was a US Marine sent in to Ramadi in '03, and he hated it. I think it was the close eye relief he didn't like for CQB, but who knows?

Some folks spend hours stalking and hunting deer. Meanwhile Henry has to pause to avoid friendly fire as they walk directly into his line of sight- or worse, directly into his previously zeroed target. It's either unbelievable luck or Henry's got some videogame skill buff as a level 100 markman that just draws targets towards his sights.

I'd say it's more the deer learning where and when they're safe and congregating in those areas. I can't tell you how many videos I've seen of out-of-season animals walking right up to hunters out for other game, almost as if to taunt them. Heck I have one saved of a turkey pecking at the barrel of a shotgun during shotgun-deer season, occasionally stopping to stare at the hunter as if to say "What're you gonna do about it?"

It's weird how game species like deer elk and pronghorn just walk onto active ranges like that. Happened to me on several occasions. That's when I also should get the rangefinder and notebook out to range it and note it for a future hunt reference.

Henry is a virtuoso of marksmanship. The AK74, heavily because of the fast and flat flight of 5.45x39, is very easy to shoot well.

Yes, you're perfectly right explaning simplicity of AK iron sights aiming doctrine, wich was developed for a conscription army. Thank you for an awesome video! One suggestion: I would love to see some videos testing maximum range of the infantry rifles. For example: How hard is it to land an 800 yard hit from an AKM? I believe the Soviets considered it “technically possible”. There are even numerical probability numbers available. It would be interesting to check if this Soviet hit probability data can be confirmed or disproved.

If you say , and the marking on the rear is up to 1000 meters ( on Soviet AKM UP to 1000 meters ) then it was not done for an accurate single fire ! in the Soviet school of shooting with AK, there was a lot of automatic fire, including disturbing. For example , they spotted the enemy at 800 m - 1000 m , introduced corrections for these distances and covered this place in short bursts . Single fire at such distances , from 5.45 is not effective .

@@kirillrassine4504 Checking the wikipedia article, the claim is that the AKM will have 25 inch vertical and a 35 inch horizontal spread at 800 meters, when fired in a short birst. If that is true, that is very effective. And, IMO it would be interesting to test this claim. Even with a semi auto fire, one can harass the enemy quite effectively with such accuracy. Imagine being on a receiving end, and hearing bullets hit less than two feet away from you. Also, you can call the round ineffective at such distances all you want, but personally, I would not want to get hit by one. Even a minor wound will suddenly change a soldier's priorities from fighting the war to dealing with a hole in his body.

Of course, I got a bullet from the AKM and at 800 meters, this is very serious and will disable 100% . I was born in the USSR and served in the Soviet Army in Afghanistan in 1987-89 . And I told you how we were prepared ! Accurate , single shooting , was conducted up to 500 meters , then recommended automatic fire . Now I have a Saiga 7.62"39 and even with 3x optics AKOG for ballistics 7.62" 39 123 gray, shooting at 800 m is extremely difficult. The speed drops , even a small wind blows away a bullet and a hit at such a distance , this is already a matter of chance . At such a distance , you need more speed and a better coefficient . 308 wines or 7.62" 54p are more suitable.

So when firing in full auto to 800 meters, do you let out a short birst, observe where the bullets impact, adjust your aim, then let out a second birst? Or do you "walk" the bullet impacts on to the target - firing a long birst as you are changing your aim while observing the bullet impacts?

Для справки, там на целике, есть такой специальный переключатель, зажимаешь его пальцами и можно поднимать и опускать прицельную планку. For reference, there is a special switch on the rear sight, you clamp it with your fingers and you can raise and lower the aiming bar. Thus, you can set the height to a certain distance, it is marked on the bar itself (in the metric system of course). Try it, it really works.

With the wind conditions you were facing on the range for this rifle, you probably would have spent another 5 -12 rounds if this was a 7.62 x 39 out of a 47 variant, just because of the huge arc needed to land shots on target. The more time in the air the more that chubby round gets pushed by the wind. I have a Yugo M70ab2 and I'm comfortable shooting it 50 - 100 yds, since there is no optic rail. With my Romy AIMS and Polish Tantal in 5.45 x 39 using a PK-A Venezuela optic (0 magnification) I'd be very comfortable shooting out as far as my bad eyesight could allow a PID on the target, with wind conditions you were facing. At 100 yards not even a challenge, but that's as far as my property will allow me to safely shoot, and I cannot claim anything otherwise until I can get them where I can utilize an longer expanse of clear range. Both of my 74 variants have the folding wire style stock as well, which makes for an interesting cheek weld on hot sunny days. :)

When whitetails become conditioned to a particular environment, they really act fearless - even on ranges. I have seen that before myself. I would.bow hunt them and rarely see them, yet anytime we would plink into the burm on the back 40, they'd be drawn in magnetically!

Just something to consider,. The advantage of the Russian doctrine is not effective if your target is not standing or at least kneeling. If the target is prone, befind a berm, to the side of a tree, etc., the Russian method goes out the window because it is intended to hit a torso. The American doctrine is better (though not necesarily great) when just the shoulder up (or even just the head) is visible.

I really like 5.45, less recoil than 5.56 but similar velocities. I would think the ballistic coefficient would be better as well because of the projectile shape. Did you notice any difference in wind drift when shooting (compared to 5.56)?

@@no-sway3709 i took some 73gr ELDM to 520yds a few days ago from my 20" FNA4 with a holosun red dot and magnifier, sub-MOA group (4.75"). 5-7mph wind with a left edge hold on my plate. They're definitely my favorite for long distance. Winds should be 3-5mph today so I might try 620yds later.

The wearable ammunition load increased from 120 rounds of 7.62x39 to 180 rounds of 5.45x39. In this case, the shooting efficiency increased by an average of 1.3 times. As a result, 1.3x1.5 = 1.95, it turns out that the combat capabilities of a soldier with an AK74 are almost twice as much as those with an AKM.

@@labinotdoda1517 7.62 is not deadlier than 5.45. It’s a bigger bullet, but 5.45 tumbles upon impact and creates a larger wound channel anyways. The only thing 7.62x39 is better at is penetrating wood and brick cover, but 5.45x39 is better at penetrating steel cover, lighter, and more accurate. If you need to penetrate cover, just grab the machinegunner. 7.62x54mmR will do the job much better than either 7.62x39 or 5.45x39.

I've been trained in the belly button targeting method with AKMS. It's simple and effective for a conscript. With single fire, you have all rounds placed in the belly and chest area. And it's also quite forgiving for mistakes, as long as general Wind is on your side.

@@PyromaN93 7.62x39 10.5” barrel = 2200fps velocity 16” barrel = 2350fps velocity 22” barrel = 2450fps velocity Anything longer will be 2450fps or less. 16” is for sure as long as you need having a longer barrel than 16” is not a great trade off for the extra weight and length of gun. Really like 14.5” is within 50fps of a 16-18” and the perfect length if you have a option in US to get a Pin n Weld setup. Good luck

Unusual to see winds strong enough to shake the spotting camera, I think the iron-sighted gun did quite well considering. That rifle's a looker too, and that's what really counts.

Interesting discussion of 'belt buckle' compared to 'Battle Sight Zero'. It has always been my understanding that these were two different ways of accomplishing the same purpose. When, in the Marines, I was taught BZO on the M14, we were told the idea was that we should be able to get a hit if we held on the target's body. All the other tinkering was for the notional 'precision shot'. IN FACT, that was the reasoning for the early M16 sight; a semi-fixed system for normal combat ranges--IMO, a far superior sight for combat than the -A2 system.

​@@jone002 You have to remember that the "belt buckle hold" doesn't actually mean that the shooter sees the target's belt buckle and aims at it. It simply means that the shooter sees the center mass of the target, and aims at the base of it, which happens to be the belt buckle area. When firing at a target that is partly behind cover, the shooter aims at the base of the exposed center mass.

Калашников в 5.45 - это прекрасное оружие для войны. Прицел "П" и прицеливание под мишень в реальных условиях очень эффективно. Реальные условия - это когда ты устал как собака, тебе очень страшно и точно не понятно, где находится противник. А еще в реальных условиях нет разницы между кучностью оружия в 1 МОА и 4 МОА но зато есть огромная разница между оружием, которое требовательно к чистке и уходу за собой и неприхотливым AK. @@wh8787 that clone is a frankenbuild out of cut down deactivated gun. Ak-12 deactivated guns are made out of production guns that fail quality control so badly that they can't be fixed. There are multiple civilian ak-12 on Russian market and most of them do not show problems found on that particular one, chain-reviewed by US guntubers.

The favorite part of the ak in Russia are their magazines. My spec-ops friend was shocked when he had a chance to test an m4, captured in Georgia in 2008, and found that you can squeeze 31st round in a stanag magazine if you are strong enough, and that people recommend to put 29 rounds inside, so reload will be more smooth. None of the problems are present in ak magazines. Also there are a lot of high-capacity magazines available, and all of them are widely used. 45 rounders work perfectly, and, while 60 round 4-row magazine and 90round drum aren't extremely reliable, they are loved for the sheer volume of covering fire they can provide in critical situations. Considering accuracy, I'll just quote my friend "it is more accurate than I will ever be when I'm under fire"

As we know from own expirience, almost impossible to see man-size target more than at 300 meters. But sometimes you need to shoot in enemy's unit (8-10 targets), so accuracy even on larger distances important. Idk how you took better results for 7.62 than 5.45. Military 5.45x39 uses a 52gr bullet. The commercial stuff is 59/60gr. That's probably why the sights were off.

I've got a Romy AK74 and a Spikes 545 AR upper. Even back when 545 was cheap and plentiful (let's have a moment of silence to remember that) the 545 in the USA was still hampered by a lack of appropriate ammo. The 7N6 was decently accurate but most ranges wouldn't let me shoot it. The accuracy of the commercial stuff was always awful, IME. I can keep 7N6 on the head of an IPSC at 200 yards out of the AK with an optic but I have a hard time holding the same group from the same setup at half the distance with any commercial ammo that I've tried.

One thing about the AK-74 is the higher velocity of the 5.45 means it spends less time in the barrel compared to the 7.62 on top of the lower recoil impulse. This translates to better accuracy for shooters with average level fundamental skills as the rifle is less sensitive overall.

It's perfectly ok if you want to put optics on your AK, but iron sights complete the package for me. (Besides my Block 1.5 and Scar has all the optics) This is a wonderful distance range. I would do this with every single one of my firearms (and would camp in the grass overnight)

AK-12 was an attempt to make an AK-74 have all the same rails and ability to accept accessories from the factory as opposed to needing to install the new railed parts yourself. First AK-12 was ok in "greenhouse" conditions, and then Ukrainian war started, and soldiers started to say what they liked and didn't like. Some stuff is solvable with better QC and manufacturing techniques (retaining stiff mounting of the dust cover over time and use), others needing a bit of re-design (muzzle device mounting, execution of sight, uselessness of 2-round burst). AK-12 is a significant rework of the AK-74, and does require maturing. New model named AK-12M1 has been announced and already received mixed reception. As for my own opinion: The way AK/AKM/AK-74 is laid out is military minimalism of "only what's necessary". Accessories are cool, but the biggest killer on the battlefield is the artillery and Ukraine has shown it starkly. All that's needed on the rifle is the ability to mount an LPVO or a prismatic sight with a 1-4x or 1-6x settings for different combat conditions. Few use settings BETWEEN 1 and whatever is the maximum. It's either 1 or maximum. As for night aiming devices, a modern night sight, or better yet thermal sight can be mounted onto the side rail. Less is more.

Soviet doctrine really pushed that a severely wounded soldier shot in the guts or upper thigh was as good as a dead soldier. They both were no longer a threat, and an added benefit of wounding is you took more than one out of the fight. More than likely another soldier or two will attempt to save their wounded.

Bulgarian AK clones are worstest one in terms of quality and compliance with production technology. Take your time, but try to accuire real Russian AK-74 sooner or later, and you will feel the difference. BTW, 300 m are supposed range of engagement with this rifle by Soviet Army standards. Above that, should work squad marksmans with SVD rifles.

I really regret selling my SLR-105R. Such a nice shooter, and the side mount rail catches a lot of grief, but honestly they work. Especially now that red dots are much more common. I also like the 5.45 cartridge. Flat shooter even if it does give up a little distance to the 5.56. Of course, there hasn't been nearly the development work on 5.45 because of its lack of popularity in the sporting market. Be careful if you take it hunting for anything larger than varmints, because it does not meet caliber size requirements in all locations. I'll own another one of these days.

I always felt like the AK-74 was “accidentally good” The 7.62x39 was a little stout for the AKM, but scaling it back while keeping the same general receiver pattern makes for a highly manageable rifle

I found with standard aks the front post is too fat beyond 200m. A human torso at 250 to 300m is smaller than the width of the sight. Swapping it for a precision front sight post makes a big difference.
