Practice mindfulness by doing yoga and meditation. Yoga means unity. You have to clear your mind and work on your inner self. A little bit like "inner engineering". What this means is that you are managing your emotions and your energy in such a way, that when you experience outside life, you will be able to handle it. Also, practice positive affirmations and visualizations with all the goals you have.

My parents unconsciously took the critical approach, because it was how they were raised. The problem with it is not only that our brains don't get motivated this way, but also that people often don't bother to explain how to achieve things. It is easy to say "You should know Math better! Why can't you just bring good grades?!" or smth, but it is hard to explain to child how to learn more effective, study equations and so on. It requires efforts, time, knowledge and patience from parents.

13:31 * *cries in asian* * ...okay jokes aside, this was one of the most relatable ted talks I have ever heard. My parents have always harshly criticized me for studies and ngl it actually worked my grades went high. So I started self criticizing myself too in order to motivate myself since my parents don't criticize me anymore. So I extreme low self compassion, low confidence, anxiety, sometimes self harm, suppress and ignore my feelings a lot, etc etc. But I am doing my best to get out of this years long rut and I will definitely be successful.

Self-esteem is contingent on success. Self-compassion requires: Being as kind, gentle and encouraging to yourself as you would be to a good friend. Finding the common humanity - how am I the same as others? Mindfulness - acknowledge & validate what is there in the present moment. Self-criticism undermines motivation & may result in shutting down. However when we show ourselves compassion, when we feel safe & comforted we can find ourselves in the optimal mind state to do our best. Self-compassion is not self indulgent; the more we are able to keep our hearts open to ourselves, the more we have available to give to others. Thank you, Kristin.

Steps to self-compassion summarised: 1. Self kindness: Kindness over harsh self judgement. Treat ourselves like you would treat a good friend. 2. Common humanity: how am I the same as others? To be human means to be imperfect. It’s what connects us all. 3. Mindfulness: being with what is in the present moment. Accept we are suffering to give ourselves compassion. Self criticism undermines our motivation.

When we see ourselves as connected to all others and not in competition with all others, we are well on our way to positive well being. Thank you for sharing your important research.

Thank you so very much for your talk and topic. I am going through the most difficult time in my life, and part of my mantra is, "How can I love myself right now? What would that look like to me? So, when I am in the middle of my 25th day of two to three hours of sleep per evening, instead of cursing and swearing, like was my usual tactic which never got me anywhere but soreness from hitting the wall, kicking the wall, literally, etc., I ask myself those questions and then I start to say thank you, and continue saying thank you until I get an idea or fall back to sleep. One evening while I was up, I turned on Hay House Radio and was looking for my favorite author. Instead, I came across a show entitled, "Loving Kindness", and decided to listen to two of the shows on archive. I was so inspired that I was able to relax and my mood and lighten up. I was able to get back to sleep but, more importantly, I had listened to some information on that show that i could inspire others with. Thanks for listening.

This presentation was so enlightening. We probably know deep down that receiving harsh criticism isn't motivating but how nice to hear that there is research to prove it. I want to hear more about the practice of self-compassion.

This is such an important idea worth spreading - Kristin Neff hits the nail on the head with this 'epidemic of narcissism' our society faces. As someone who has struggled with depression, I do believe we would all benefit from greater self-compassion.

Beautiful thoughts on self compassion. I clearly understood how high self esteem can be harm to ourselves. Thank you for this clarity. I'll adopt self compassion more.

Your talk is the most profound I've witnessed so far through any channel. I actually cried, a healing cry. You switched on a part of my brain that had been lost to low self esteem. The only thing you are wrong about is that look-based self esteem issues don't affect males. Ever since early school I assumed I was not 'cool enough' despite regular compliments on my looks. As a man its only got harder, ever since acne in my 20's. I wanted to be better looking than everyone. I thank you for so much!

So amazing and genuinely narrated. It's 💯 true, it's starts with you allowing yourself to be compassionate towards yourself. So grateful for being able to listen to this, thank you so much. ❤

Very interesting and helpful. Never thought about this before, but makes a lot of sense. No wonder Buddhism is so popular with westerners. What a great concept. And very well delivered.

This was seriously amazing. I was dealing with heavy heavy depression and anxiety, this helped me identify so many things about myself, people lack so much self compassion. We forget to be kind to our own minds. Thank you so much for this.

I love her family. I knew as soon as it started who she was. You have to read the horse boy and the long ride home if you haven't. Her autistic son rowan was healed in many aspects of his autism thanks to a horse and the shamans of Mongolia. Truly inspirational! :D

...but self compassion can also give people who do bad things feelings of solace. It's a double edged sword.
