I’m laughing at you guys. My father used to take us survival camping with a canvas tarp (shelter s well as carrying what you need), Swiss knife, a cook set, canteen, and a flint when I was 9. No help cause you’re a girl by the way. And boiling purifies water guys! And those lighters? Let the wind blow and see how long they last. You have no idea do you. I’m in my 60s now and I’m going to live longer than you are! Oh, and sleeping? Forget it. Unless you got someone to take shifts, you’re dead!

Thanks guys. We don’t have a strong “spec opps” community in South Africa but here right now it’s vital not to fall asleep at the wheel. I appreciate your insights and even though we are still living a “sorta” regular life , civilization is a thin coat of varnish on a table easily scratched off by panick and stupidity. Find bukowski poem called the genius of the crowd. This is my philosophy and your videos help feed the idea of staying focused and alive (when) it all goes to shit.

Great lesson here. In quick desperation, Shawn's first instinct was to find a weapon and ability to break into property to steal stuff. When I was in my early 20's, I once got caught in a blizzard snowstorm 300 miles from home in rural America where the highways and auxiliary roads were suddenly closed. I had my jeep, $34 and the roads were going to be closed up to 5 days. The very small town I found myself stuck in had a Walmart. The only hotel was full, and the National guard was called. Families got first priority for the local school and church sheltering, and I was alone, so I had to shelter in my truck. I bought a cheap sleeping bag, 2 gallons of water, 6 warming packs, and a big can of peanut trail mix. I only spent a few days before they opened the roads but night temps dipped into negative numbers. The hand warmer packs worked well in the sleeping bag to keep me warm, the peanut trail mix sustained my nutritional needs, and the water was enough to last me days. I spent free time walking down the road and assisting the National guard setting up cots at the school and churches for stuck families. I'm so thankful that small town had a Walmart, otherwise it would have been very uncomfortable in that emergency situ. I ended up spending $25 at Walmart and the remainder went to gas for my jeep to run the heater if needed and still have enough fuel to drive home. Now if I travel in winter, I always keep a heat reflective survival poncho, some food source, usually a bag of trail mix, heat warming packs and extra water in my vehicle.
