I was 11 year old boy from Norway in 1980 and I remember how amazing he was at the Olympics in Lake Placid, my family cheered on him, he deserved every gold medal he won, respect!

It bothers me that Heiden isn't more celebrated here in the US. What he did in 1980 will not be equaled in my lifetime, and without significant rules or equipment changes I don't foresee it ever happening again. Heiden's performance in 1980 and that of Secretariat in 1973 are the greatest feats of physical dominance I've ever seen in sport. Are there any skaters who qualify for the final rounds of the Olympics in every distance today? Heiden can walk down any street in the US (except maybe his home town) and nobody knows who he is. If he does the same in any of the Scandinavian countries, he'll be recognized by someone for sure.

Very nice My mom is a hiding same spelling from Wisconsin I believe my grandfather and his grandfather are brothers we used to go to the West Allis Milwaukee area as kids for an occasional family reunion we were about an hour north of him

Greatest Man on skates ever.I had a Heiden hat too my grandmother made me for my speed skating meets in Ohio. Won my first three sprints.

I remember watching Eric ,I was only 16 probably 15,,it still gives me goosebumps, having been a amateur athlete myself

A few corrections, the Russian he was paired against in the 500 was Yvegeny Kulikov, not Kuliskov. And Eric's sister Beth, won 1 world title (1979), not 3.

Hey coach it seems the A.I. can't distinguish between junior/senior titles haha. Beth also won 2 times WC juniors 78,79. (Btw at her WC senior-title she did win all 4 distances!!) All the best with team-USA, greetings from NL
