Why is it so true the message within Pocahontas? This message shines bright with how hatred can separate people even though they are the same. This is why Pocahontas will always be my favorite Disney movie. It talked about racial prejudices and showed they can live in harmony,

But they didn't...she moved to England and died of some disease. And her tribe was raped, pillaged and killed of. The rest of the Native American tribes were forced off their traditional lands and to this day remain an underprivileged community.
@leavemealoha

She died of either pneumonia or tuberculosis. What's sad is that she was buried in England and not laid to rest in Virginia. In England, while she had an audience with King James I, she was recognized as a "savage" Native who was successfully transformed into a "civilized" woman who took up the English way of living after being baptized and reborn as Rebecca. Not exactly the ideal representation of "harmony" among Natives and the Anglo-Saxons. The movie romanticizes the history between Native Americans and settlers. I guess the good lesson taught by the fictional story is about the prejudices that exist in society and how to overcome them. It is the ideal relationship between settlers and Native Americans, even though it rarely to never happened throughout history.

That will never happen, and for good reason. It's a spit in the face not only to the actual historical person, but also to the tribe, and the tribe has come forth begging Disney not to make anything else around that person. Hell, how would you feel if, say, you found out your grandmother was raped as a little girl and a film was made around her, making her older and having her fall in love with her rapist who also contributed in killing your grandmothers parents and siblings? You'd be horrified at it and demand it not be made.

It is. It is called Fancy Dance. However, it was not created until after WWII and is not done in traditional regalia. The regalia worn by Fancy Dancers are vibrant and colorful and are made of modern fabrics, not the leather of traditional regalia. It also represents the story of a butterfly. Just like the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly, Fancy Dance represents the transition of girls into womanhood. It mimics the flight of butterflies by displaying light and swooping movements. I recommend looking up videos on performances. It is really beautiful to watch. :)

@leavemealoha
@leavemealoha 4 жыл бұрын
@@7mandoblu The New World is not a completely accurate depiction of Pocahontas' life. It is another romaticized version of history. In the movie, it shows Pocahontas as a late teenager (maybe between 16 and 18 years old - 15 at the earliest?) when she met John Smith. In actuality, she was between the ages of 9 and 13 years old when the settlers landed in Virginia in 1607. John Smith and Pocahontas were close, but they were never lovers. Their relationship was more like that of a brother and sister. While it is sometimes speculated she possessed romantic feelings for John Smith at one point, it never came to fruition. In the movie, I also noticed that years seem to pass by and Pocahontas never ages...just an observation. :)

One of the beliefs about the origins of Thanksgiving was that it started as a feast among Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag tribe to celebrate their alliance. Today, Thanksgiving is also a day to share among family and friends to reflect on what individuals are thankful for in their lives. However, to a lot of Native Americans, Thanksgiving overshadows the numerous bloody conflicts between tribes and European settlers. It is important to recognize what Thanksgiving represents to Native Americans and not just Anglo-Saxons.

They consulted with Russell Means (the voice of Chief Powhatan in the movie) and his organization, American Indian Movement, to make sure they stayed as accurate as possible when it came to the clothes and dances. They already almost got a nasty PR fire from Aladdin, they weren't going to risk it with Pocahontas. He was overwhelmed how well Disney did with the accuracy of their life at the time in regards to the Pocahontas franchise. So if anyone does complain about it, they did try their best and had approval from those who would know all about the lifestyle and clothing of the time.

dude, these stage shows were literally peak Disney performances. They need to bring these back. The Snow White one is also top tier, especially with that magic mirror and castle set. This was such a creative way to retell Pocahontas. Loved the effects, puppetry, and the way the British were represented. Not even mad that Ratcliff was cut entirely. The message still stands. That Grandmother Willow puppet is something I haven't seen in a LONG time from Disney. Bring that this level of creativity and love.

Billy in Coo coo nest, Will in Oklahoma, different parts in Our Town, Claude in Hair plus tons of back stage work. And worked for Chevrolet for two years in industrial films and national TV Ads 1985- 86. That was good money. Did some film work, nothing you ever heard of, low budget crap. Also did tons of student films. l was up for some pretty good stuff. Came close to getting a part in Raising AZ, it was me or the guy who got it. Same with Murphy's Romance. Twice i got big parts in films, the lead or 2nd lead then the funding went dry and they didnt happen. They were low budget crap, one was a cheesy animal house rip off and one a horror film. ln 89 i was going to do a film with Martin Short. They told me i had the part. Then they brought me in to Warner Brothers to meet him, he was very nice to me , but they said i was to tall. then... nothing. ln 91 l gave it up and l went to school and got my nursing license. l gave it a shot from 84 - 91 l said that was enough and time to get a real job that pays reg. l would stress easily not having a reg paycheck. l recently retired from CDCR Calif corrections where i was a nursing supervisor and now get my pension.

Okay, watching this again, and I love the genius detail of Ratcliff being cut because the native Americans never really interacted with him. To them, he's just another person from the boat. John Smith was the only one whom they ever actually were acquainted with. Also, Disney currently trying everything to be "inclusive" and "diverse" when they've already done so with shows like this. Not to mention the film. This was the level of representation I was expecting with Tiger Lily in Peter Pan and Wendy, and unfortunately, they turned her into a token. Same goes for Tink and the Lost Boys. They completely erased Tiger's tribe save for a brief few seconds. I firmly believe they overcorrected the animation's mistakes. THIS is how you do representation. It's tasteful, respectful, and creative. God, I wish we could go back to this Disney...

I just went to Disney world. She’s the only princess who doesn’t have a photographer or a designated spot. She just wanders. I love her, no matter how historically inaccurate. It just makes me mad bc she has the least amount of mention, no photographer, no spot, and she doesn’t have a float in any parade. She has no shows, nothing. No love action movie being done.

There was a great non-Disney live-action movie about Pocahontas made about 15 years ago called “The New World.” It starred Q’uirianka Kilcher as Pocahontas, Colin Farrell as John Smith, and Christian Bale as John Rolfe. A “live action” version of the Disney movie would be a total trainwreck, unless they make MAJOR changes. The real Pocahontas was one of the greatest Americans who ever lived, I think a better move would be to put her image on U.S. currency and build more monuments of her.

*Chiara Offreduccio* the Disney movie was based on the legend of Pocahontas (i.e., Indian princess falls in love with English settler and saves his life). The movie posters even read: "An American legend comes to life." The film was never meant to be a biopic. Just as Disney put their own spin on the European fairy tales, they were doing the same with the Pocahontas legend. Contrary to popular belief, Disney did not invent the Pocahontas/John Smith romance. It had been part of the legend for centuries.
